Needs more options for seasons.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, for the purposes of this poll, let's make the assumption of late Fall/Winter/early Spring!

kkvgz, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

i.e. cold.

kkvgz, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

OK! Generally, both under the covers, then. (Though last night it got pretty warm in the bedroom and I had to poke my feet out.)

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

Needs option for "If you disturb the flatness and tucked-inness of my sheets all the way around, I will shake them back into shape, flouncingly, with every intention of waking you up."

If the covers over my feet are loose and drapey, they brush against my feet and make them itch. Everything has to be tucked in and under tension like a circus tent.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

For temperature control I put my arms out or adjust the top line of covers to somewhere between neck and waist.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

I keep one leg straight, the other draped over a pillow

dayo, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

Both feet under covers and (good trick, this) residual clamp of comforter edge between knees because in a couple, you learn to anchor that sucker down if losing the covers wakes you the Hell up.

Why would you not cover up your legs if it's not really hot?

Total opposite! If the covers are tightly tucked in, my feet feel all claustrophobic and misshapen. So I frequently kick the covers up just to create some space. After a day of wearing socks and shoes, it feels great to let my bare feet breathe.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

one leg in, one leg out, unless it's freezing or boiling

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm with Jay. I would die if I had to sleep in a bed with the covers tucked in. The fist thing I do at hotels in untuck the sheets!

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

I am also a one leg in one leg out person but my feet are generally always out unless it's really really cold.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

The "feet in or out" question is closely related to MY favorite bedding issue, which is that sheets should be tucked in FIRMLY all the way around. I really like the good ol' American style of sheet, blanket, comforter, in that order, with the sheet turned neatly down at top so your skin never touches the outer bedding, since it's less washable.

People who pull the bottom out of tuck and thrash around, wrapping themselves in 70% of the available bedding and getting crud on it all willy-nilly should sleep on the couch until they learn to take their repose in a civilized manner.

lol

ie - me

I don't even use a top sheet tbh just a fitted sheet. I have a feather bed with removable duvet cover which I wash every week.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

Of course, it's possible to untuck sheets and not thrash around.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

which is that sheets should be tucked in FIRMLY all the way around

It makes me uncomfortable just thinking about having to sleep in a bed with firmly tucked sheets.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, if I ever have another partner who sleeps like a landed fish and flops all over the damn place with my down comforter, I'll reconsider the no-top-sheet route. But I'll fight it!

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

not sure how you teach yourself to sleep lying still?

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

unless it is something to do with a blameless conscience which wd explain a lot tbh

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

Naw, honestly I have no idea. Maybe something to do with growing up in a room that was so cold, I wore 3 layers of clothes to bed and put a heating pad under my feet and wouldn't have DARED to peep a toe out? But that was only for a few months of the year, it can't possibly explain my total mania. Or having only a twin-sized bed until I was 25? There's nowhere to go in one of those really.

I like the feeling of cool air on my skin. Year round, I sleep naked, ceiling fan on, with bedding only covering a part that feels too cold (usually my midriff and butt). During the below-zero snap last week the heat in my building was going crazy, so I also opened my bedroom window a crack.

Now that I sleep on my side, I tend to put a pillow between my knees. Both legs under the covers, obviously, whether solo or not.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'm with Laurel on the swaddling front, though I'm to lazy to have anything but a duvet form the most part. But if someone provides a top sheet, yes, no scrappy loose mess please.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

For the most part, rather.

Alba, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

If it's cold then the bottom of the sheets should be tucked in. Otherwise I am quite adept, even when almost entirely asleep, at poking a foot, even *gasp* an ankle out from under the covers to regulate my temperature.

Le mépris vient de la tête, la haine vient du cœur (Michael White), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

i'm 100% with laurel, i can't sleep if there's a twisted or flappy sheet annoying my fusspot princess and the pea feet.

I love the company I'm keeping!

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

I cant answer this because the answer is "it depends". I think I tend to rotate, rotisserie-style, in bed a lot, so in the morning I wake up wrapped in my doona like a souvlaki with one pillow half under my head and the other between my knees/being hugged/half off the bed.

If its summer I'll sleep half under a sheet. I cant not be covered by *something*, even if just a sheet. Otherwise the boogieman will get my toes :(

Senor DingDong (Trayce), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

Currently covered by a blanket, no sheet: mid-chest to calves. Lying on my back, watching a movie. Feet are free and cool.

(I wish I could sleep on my back, but I would die in my sleep due to snoring. We should have a sleeping habits Body Position poll. If we don't already.)

also, that Christmas tree has a dildo on its head (Jesse), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

i definitely always have my legs under the covers, even when it's hot i just sleep under a sheet and nothing else. my legs are too long to have the sheet tucked in at the bottom of the bed ever though, i always untuck it the moment i get into a hotel bed or anything

ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

I like sleeping on my back but sometimes when I do I get sleep paralysis which is a whole barrel of sucky screaming monkeys.

so do i!

estela, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 06:35 (fourteen years ago)

Both under the covers -- though I'm in Trayce's souvlaki/rotisserie boat, I sleep pretty violently apparently and don't always end up inside the sheets that I start out in. Sometimes if I can't sleep or get restless I'll throw one leg outside the covers, but for the most part I like a tucked in bed, no untucked twisted sheets going on around me, smooth and cozy and nice.

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 06:40 (fourteen years ago)

laurel's strict views on this subject made my morning, when she discussed the importance of sheet tension i was overjoyed.

estela, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 06:41 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I feel less weird about correcting the sheets before I get into bed, which Mr Veg does not do which I just don't understand at all. You just lie down under the sheets and hope they'll sort themselves out? No. At least starting out with a tidy sleeping arrangement gives the illusion that one might have a restful night's sleep, surely.

VegemiteGrrl, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 06:43 (fourteen years ago)

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

Too many restrictions to properly vote on this poll methinks!
It doesn't take in the occasional OCD that comes into play for me (the need for orderly perfectly tucked, hospital corners, starched sheets)perfection when sleeping solo.

TMI I suppose, but I now spend equal amounts with a male sleep partner and sleeping alone. Now when alone, I share the bed with two felines who make me too warm, so I alternate between one leg out and one leg under.

The 7 years I spent married, my husband compulsively untucked the foot of the bed every night - he hated his feet being bound (I do too, but I am a foot and a half shorter than him; he was six foot 5 inches so for me in a king sized bed it wasn't an issue). Now when sharing my bed with a man for the night, depending on the man, I keep both legs under...unless he's a "cuddler", then it's much like sleeping with the cats (I can hear you all gagging now! :)) I keep one leg out for coolness, air and breathing.

Wiggywoo, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 07:06 (fourteen years ago)

When I was in college, my roommate told me she could not EVER sleep without the foot of the bed being tightly tucked in and the sheets perfectly aligned, because when she was a child her Grandma told her that the devil would pull her out of bed by her feet in the night if the bed was a mess! She still had the phobia as a 20 year old, and I would bet it still plagues her now 25 years later!

Wiggywoo, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 07:10 (fourteen years ago)

how do people end up with pillows between their knees?

I must always have a knee pillow. At home that is a body pillow, even when sleeping with a partner. Otherwise my hips feel weird.

also, that Christmas tree has a dildo on its head (Jesse), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

both in, with a body pillow. i am captain "weight", i like the feeling of being weighted down with my covers, i have flannel or fleece sheets with two blankets and a down comforter which is inside a flannel duvet. Its like sleeping under a yeti.

lol jordan and i have an almost nightly argument about the state of the sheets/blankets: he HATES sleeping with a top sheet but i'm w/laurel in that fuck-washing-a-comforter/thick-blanket. BUT he gets super mad if the sheet is all wacky, which it often is. and of course he waits till i'm already in bed, warm and cosy, before deciding that the sheets are too messed up and he needs to move them and flap them about to get them right, in which case i yell THOU WHOM SO COMPLAINS THE LOUDEST ABOUTETH THE SHEETS SHOULD MAKE THE FUCKING BED EVERY MORNING!

just1n3, Monday, 21 February 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

Sheets always end up tangled round yr legs all spazzy like, even if you make the bed every day! So I find anyway. So doona and fitted sheet it is for me!

But I have a bed all to myself I thrash about in like a rotisserie fish, so.

i think laurel is essentially otm here

my feet stick out over the edge, so if there is no tucking of sheets then my feet get cold

i have pretty much taught myself to exclusively (i already did a good portion of the time) to sleep on my side, because i am more likely to snore on my back
