This debate originated in the "Innocuous Things" thread. Basically, which do you find 'safer' personally or do more often?

Back into a parking space, or pull in straight?

I find driving forwards easier than driving backwards, so when I'm driving towards obstacles (like adjacent cars) I like to go forwards.

In theory, but it always takes them forever because they have to be real careful moving backwards into a confined space. Plus if you're driving behind them and they drive past a space there's that moment of elation where you think you're getting the space, but it turns out they're just preparing to back in. it's fucking BULLSHIT!!!!!!

some dude, Sunday, 27 February 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

there are some streets here that have those annoying angled spots by the curb you have to back into because they are pointing into the flow of traffic. they are dumb. anyway backing into spots would be good if maybe you are robbing a bank and want to make a quick getaway

If you parallel park by pulling in, you do not know how to parallel park. (Or there are no other cars parked on the street.)

ok, I'm not accusing anyone here of veiled racism (and even if I did, how could I prove it?), but I'd like to point out that in the US there's an ugly notion that backing into parking spots is such a black thing to do. I don't know where this stereotype comes from, but strangely I hear it a lot from people who consider themselves liberal and anti-racist. they'll never admit it directly, but the subtext of statements like "it's such a waste of time" and "maybe it's easier to hook up the jumper cables that way" is all too obvious to me. I guess people feel comfortable venting their bigotry when the subject is something they perceive as trivial (cf. the tipping debate). but these little islands of hatred are more dangerous than they think.

The only people I see backing into parking spots are white women on their cell phones* so that just seems... completely 100% wrong to me.

* btw, every time we see someone driving terribly or stupidly, my wife and I say "that must be a white woman on her cell phone" and we are correct about 85% of the time

sometimes my wife will back into a parking space and I will think to myself "the fact that you decided this was a reasonable thing to do makes you the worst driver in the entire world", but since she is actually an excellent driver she can pull into the spot in the same amount of time it takes to go in headfirst and I feel petty and churlish

I still think I have a point, tho

Backing in where I'm from is a fratboy/Guido thing - show off your bitchin' Camaro or lifted truck.

I'm pretty good at backing in to places (from backing my truck to loading docks or whatever for work) but I'd never do it in a parking lot.

dunno why someone would think backing in to be a waste of time. it's the same amount of time they'd be wasting had they pulled in and had to back out.

Uh, backing in between two cars is much more time consuming than backing into the lane of a parking lot.

one thing i hate and wish i could write my own tickets for is this: there is a big free parking garage next to the building i work in. it has hundreds of spots. the first level/entry ramp is the best to park on because the walk is quicker but all of those spots say "compact cars only." lazy asses in suvs or lincoln town cars still park there and then no one can park in the spots adjacent to them because they are too big. this is wrong!

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Sunday, 27 February 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

what's the logic for making it illegal beyond 'it annoys some people'?

FLORIDA Stupid Laws

In Florida, a special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing.

Oral sex is illegal in Florida.

One may not commit any “unnatural acts” with another person.

It is illegal to sell your children in Florida.

You may not kiss your wife’s breasts.

When having sex, only the missionary position is legal in Florida.

If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as it would for a vehicle.

Penalty for horse theft is death by hanging.

In Sarasota Florida it is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit

Unmarried couples may not commit “lewd acts” and live together in the same residence.

It is illegal to have sexual relations with a porcupine in Florida.

You may not fart in a public place after 6 P.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 27 February 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

thanks to Lawrence v Texas, one may now enjoy oral sex and non-missionary sex. Dunno how the porcupines are doing.

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Sunday, 27 February 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

I have never heard this thing about black people backing into parking spots.

I'll tell you why it's annoying for people to back into an empty spot. If you're driving around a lot and someone's got their reverse lights on, you have to wait:

(A) If they're backing out of a spot, hurray, you're that close to parking. The extra time it takes to wait will have its rewards when the driver vacates the space.

(B) If they're backing in, you still have to wait, even if there's another empty space just up the row and for what? Nothing because you're a schnook. If you're lucky, she'll get it right the first time and you won't have to sit there for two or three more attempts.

well, yeah, but it slightly confused me that there was a lot of general talk about parking without any reference to what type of parking we're discussing

some dude, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

in Orlando, there isn't much parallel parking except downtown. I've barely even done it in my life. it isn't even on the driver's exam (or wasn't when I took it). weird, huh?

anyway, standard lot parking itt.

i seen a man *plop* (San Te), Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

i never back into spots, but sometimes if i'm pulling in a spot that has another row directly in front of it and the spot next to it is vacant, i'll pull up into that spot so i can drive forward out of that spot when i leave. my family always called that 'the getaway spot,' although my wife (who's an army brat) calls is 'combat parking.'

some dude, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

actually thought about that for a bit, w/ military mentality in application. seems like the only reason one would ever call it "combat" parking is b/c they'd never want to imply retreat in any "slang" they adopted. b/c, if anything, it seems 9999999x more likely for an army type to need that position than any civilian coming back from barnes and nobles.

if wars were, um, fought on parking lots.

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

they made us park between cones and told us to "think of the cones as cars". which to me was completely ridiculous, because how often do you park between vehicles with no parking space lines to delineate the space? not to mention the fact that it shortened the width considerably.

I failed the first time mostly cuz I wasn't great at parking at 17 and had a big station wagon in a cramped parking lot and had a difficult time negotiating the thin space.

Florida removed the parallel parking portion of the exam the same year in which I turned sixteen. Perhaps the DMV assumed the task was too difficult, and, in their infinite foresight, forgot that Miami is a city where one has to parallel park at least twice a week.

iatee, Monday, 28 February 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

been practicing back-in parking over the last few weeks. it's not terribly difficult; i have yet to misjudge my angle such that I'd have to pull forward out into the aisle and try again. i don't do it if there's someone else behind me though, because I dont want to gived them false hope about a parking spot, and also because for whatever other reason (stigma from this thread, probably; back-in may be ilx's flip flops of parking), i still feel like a bit of a douche when I do it.

people covet pull-through spots so much, but they seem more dangerous. you could be pulling through at the same time someone's trying to park front-in. i mean, that's definitely happened to me, from both perspectives.
