Wondering if people around here watch/enjoy/hate this show. I realize it's basically "The Soup + Youtube" but I find myself looking forward to new eps of this more than anything else these days. The idea of making fun of Internet videos isn't really new but Tosh is one of the most quick-witted people on TV right now and takes it to another level. I don't know if he's an acquired taste or if people find it easy to put up with his self-important asshole shtick but he really makes the show tick. Also, the "Web Redemption" idea is brilliant. Your thoughts???

Web Redemption is a nice idea, but otherwise I can't stand this guy, and prefer my web clips au naturel.

― ENBB, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
You have to watch a few episodes...he is self-aware of what he's doing, at least. Like he does make references to his "asshole" persona and what it means to host a show on Comedy Central and it's pretty funny.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
show costs about $5 to produce i guess. i assumed it was a public access show when i started watching

he can be very funny, and i like the web redemptions and some of the other pre-filmed gags. but it's a shame he has to lean on the self aware-racist-irony thing so much. more than once every third episode or so and it really loses its punch really fast.

this show is pretty funny, feel like he's got enough wit to kind of elevate the show above other lame attempts to turn web videos into a TV show. i like that his humor has a 'mean' edge, when he says offensive stuff it definitely feels a little more purposeful and self-aware button-pushing than anything else, although i can see how that doesn't make it any better to some people.

i like tosh.0 a lot as a show but he definitely crosses the line b/w making race jokes & using comedy as an excuse to be a racist

tosh.0 is good! like it's entertaining & it deals w/ internet memes in a better & funnier fashion than the whole internet & most other pop culture mediums -- i think it has a great balance b/w 'the soup'-style playing a video and saying zingy one liners & field pieces (one of the best ones is w/ the guy from the nyer article that was stuck in an elevator) -- his field pieces are almost always amazing

Yeah he definitely straddles the line pretty hard; I mean it's not like he doesn't rip on white people all the time too. One of my favorite Tosh bits was this video made by a 7-year old that basically took apart the show for how unfunny and lazy it could be. I think he just runs and says whatever he thinks is funny regardless of who it may offend. Like he's trying to hit one demographic really hard (people who are like Daniel Tosh) rather than appeal to a wider base (something he references quite a bit, actually)
― frogbs, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)
Some of the Web Redemptions are classic BTW. The Average Homeboy one is incredible. In addition to being funny they are actually pretty good as character pieces. Definitely some interesting people out there and I like how Tosh is pretty much comfortable with everyone. My only complaint is that they haven't featured Eli Porter...that would be such a slam dunk

― reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
I haven't seen enough to get a comprehensive picture of his meanness, but it comes across as standard obligatory meanness. He's mean because the culture of commentary demands that he be mean, and I don't even sense that he particularly delights in being mean (and in the two web redemptions posted, he's not mean at all). It's a joyless meanness. At least on TMZ there's a kind of cheer to their meanness.
Maybe there can be an Andrew WK of being mean who can topple Tosh.O from his perch.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
the show -- like the soup -- needs to be mean to be successful, but it doesn't need to be casually racist/sexist/homophobic etc

Has a non-mean web clips show ever been tried? I figure one hosted by concerned grandmothers would be a hit. After every atrocity clip you can cut to them going, "Oh dear! I hope that fellow is okay."And then they can give grandmotherly advice, like, "baking soda will get that murder stain right out."Or, "I, too, saw a double rainbow... the day we were rescued from Dachau"

They had Phil Davidson on this week (the guy who gave that ridiculously amped up campaign speech for county Treasurer); it was really awesome to find out that the guy apparently does a lot of drugs (and has no problem admitting it) and that a bunch of people got freaked out and walked out on his speech. Some of it was really funny - "do you think you would have won had you apologized for your tone that night?", but I really thought they were going to do so much more with the presidential campaign joke, it really seemed like it could be Tosh.0's funniest moment ever but instead kind of devolved into a stupid and unrelated joke...still one of the best Web Redemptions

Wow, remy's posts from last summer!
I like the term 'machete humor'. His whole persona is that guy who did or could have made high school a living hell so it's weird when he dorks out and when he's nice to people. He's part bully, part clown and part desperate for approval while at the same time pushing loads of buttons and grinning about it.
