Just curious as to how many people plan on actually watching the Oscars. I probably won't have haven't for around 10 years or so. Will you?

umm who is hosting?

rip van wanko, Sunday, 27 February 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

Honestly? I have no idea.

ENBB, Sunday, 27 February 2011 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

Err James Franco and Anne Hathaway apparently. That seems weird.

ENBB, Sunday, 27 February 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

I'll watch some, as I do most years. I've got a bit more of a rooting interest this year--I'd like to see The Social Network win at least a couple of big awards--and the death-roll is a must. (More even than best picture, a friend and I always try to guess who gets the coveted last spot on the death-roll.) When things get too mawkish, or too garish, or when the first Jack joke rears its head, I scurry away. Anne Hathaway's another reason to watch this year.

Voting yes anyway although 'watching' might be a little strong xp

how many of these will make In Memoriam:

Maria Schneider
Tura Satana
Lena Nyman (of the I Am Curious films)

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

I'll bet Maria makes it for the Brando and Bertolucci-association alone.

Probably switch back n forth between the awards and animation domination.

no.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

Remembering her, Bertolucci said, "Her death came too soon, before I could hold her again tenderly, and tell her that I felt connected to her as on the first day, and for once, to ask her to forgive me."[11] "Maria accused me of having robbed her of her youth and only today am I wondering whether there wasn't some truth to that," he added.

yowch

Was Tony Curtis the biggest death this year (at least from a Hollywood standpoint)? Am I forgetting somebody?

clemenza, Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

The In Memoriam always made me tear up without fail and regardless of who was featured.

Hmm maybe I will watch for that. Completely forgot T. Curtis died.

ENBB, Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

I hope they fit in Lamont Johnson and George Hickenlooper. Hickenlooper will be there for sure, as he has a film in theatres right now; Johnson, I'm not so sure.

clemenza, Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

Probably switch back n forth between the awards and animation domination.

Animation is all repeats tonight. FOX knows better than to even try. We'll have them on the TV even though I could give a crap. I saw only Toy Story 3 and Inception among the nominees this year.

some dude, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

I think I romanticize the broadcasts of the '70s. It seemed like there was always something crazy happening: Scott and Brando, Vanessa Redgrave, the Hearts and Minds guy, the streaker, Jane Fonda, etc. Probably most of those shows were just as uneventful as they usually are (even if the films were generally much better). I was least interested during the '80s, that whole Gandhi/Out of Africa/Color Purple window (most of the decade, probably) when I would pretentiously make a point of going out to a film the night of the show. I started watching again the '90s, and I've now reached a point where getting worked up over them seems very much akin to that Simpsons "Man Shouts at Cloud" joke.

clemenza, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

didn't they not show clips in the 70s

ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

my mom always complained about how bad they were in the 70s cuz they didnt show clips

ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

I can't remember, but that sounds right. I'd be fine without the great majority of clips that will be shown tonight. In years like '74-'76, clips would have been really worthwhile.

clemenza, Sunday, 27 February 2011 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

So when in the '70s did they start showing clips anyways? First one I saw (portions of) was in '78 and I recall the "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters" clips.

(Watched 'em in my pajamas on my portable b&w, way past my bedtime lol)

"Could Mr. Firth smell earthy chode rubbings mucking the arms of the furniture? Did Ms. Carter feel the sweaty undulations dripped onto the rotting walls of their decrepit hideaway? Did Mr. Rush taste the faint hint of semen and man-pussy in the air and think, "Ahhhhh! History!"?"

Ha, sort of like the idea that once a porn flick (gay or straight) shoots on a location then that location is forever more branded a porn set. Like, sorry guys, this set has been sullied. Either find a new location or bring out the bulk bleach

has anyone seen any of the short film entries? my local art theater's been screening them in ~100 minute blocks (one for animated shorts, one for live action). i checked out the animated shorts screening, which was the 5 nominees plus 2 of the ten pre-selected 'highly commended' shorts. i thought the best one was actually one of the commended non-nominees, plympton's The Cow Who Wanted to Be a Hamburger. Second best was probably a tie between the actual winner and the Pixar short. wondering if the live-action ones are worth seeing.

I think Gukbe's being sarcastic, because they've won 3 Oscars for animated shorts.

ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't mind Hathaway and Franco that much... They did the best they could with the rotten lines given to them though their coping strategy was to load up on quaaludes and pretend they're in a high school talent show.

Not sure I like having movie industry folks host though... What was great about Johnny Carson (and Letterman to some degree) is that they didn't have to really be diplomatic or nice with anyone in the room that's a future employer/agent - just entertain and keep the show moving along.

no sarcasm. they haven't won one since 2000, almost like the Academy recognized their ascendency to the top of the Animated film pile and decided not to award their short films anymore.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

I loved Letterman when he hosted, though I was in my early teens I think. I never understood why he's generally considered the ultimate bomb when it comes to Oscars hosts.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

Even more the Oprah/Uma, I still remember Letterman's dig at Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon--that's the one that did him in, I imagine. (I don't understand the ultimate bomb idea, either. It's simply not true.)

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not sure i 'get' the idea that actors like Hathaway & Franco are inherently too close to the industry in a way that comics and talk show hosts aren't. obv the more seasoned comics might have sharper material or might be more fearless about going for the less polite jokes, but i don't know if that's because Billy Crystal and Jon Stewart are less beholden to show business or whatever the rationale is.

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

Billy Crystal falls about halfway. But a Carson or Stewart or Letterman makes his living making fun of movie-star inanity and pretension--they (or their writers, but in the end it amounts to the same thing) have a sixth sense about it, in a way that I just don't think people like Hathaway or Franco do (not least of all because they're so young). Try to imagine someone like Anne Hathaway calling out the pomposity of Tim Robbins (or, in today's currency, Sean Penn). It's just not going to happen.
