Do seasons start on different dates in the southern hemisphere than in the northern? (I know they're reversed, but it's not really autumn yet is it?)

Love,
JF, the annoying factualist

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 February 2011 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

sigh

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

ugh worst xpost ever

our seasons start on the first day of the month at exact three-monthly intervals, which makes no sense because the actual seasons don't work like that

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

lousy smarch

haydens gonna hade (electricsound), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter#Period

In many countries in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia,[6][7] New Zealand and South Africa, winter begins on 1 June and ends on 31 August.

assuming it's the same for all seasons iirc

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting. Had no idea!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 February 2011 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's only recently that I discovered the northern hemisphere adheres to irregular season lengths (which makes approx. 1,000 times more sense imo)

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

We never even had a fricking summer! Grumble. Eyo mongos. And JF.

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

Wait wait - seasons dont start on the 1st of the month in the US?

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

I've always thought of Smarch as autumny anyway, cause my birthday's always had an august air of crispness, colder days and orange leaves. Or did back home, anyway. Holy shit thats in 2 weeks.

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

march is going to be both awesome and sucktacular

haydens gonna hade (electricsound), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

I am determined to make it as awesome as possible. For a few reasons! None of which may pan out but that isnt gonna stop me!

Emilio Estevez commits fratricide (sic), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

Wait wait - seasons dont start on the 1st of the month in the US?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Hemisphere

Due to the Earth's axial tilt, winter lasts from the winter solstice (typically December 22) to the vernal equinox (typically March 20), while summer lasts from the summer solstice (typically June 21) through to the autumnal equinox (typically September 21).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 February 2011 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

seasons r just an illuminati concept anyway, mayne

joe smooth's 'promised blend' instant coffee (haitch), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

thanks! xps

march is always really hot up here, we don't get any autumn at all until april, and sometimes then not till late in the month.

estela, Monday, 28 February 2011 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

I knew about proper seasons and that the date ones didnt fit it, and I kjnew they did that in Europe but had no idea it was the case in the US as well. Apparently we're the odd ones out! Typical.

'appy birthday estela

The Filth and The North Queensland Fury (King Boy Pato), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

Growing up in Adelaide, March was always an "indian summer" month. Now living in Sydney, it's the "when will this bloody humidity stop" month.

It never seemed/seems to start cooling down until my birthday in April, I usually remember the first cold storm of the year occuring when we were playing in the McDonalds playground during mine birthday celebrations (this was for the single-digit celebrations, of course).

The Filth and The North Queensland Fury (King Boy Pato), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

Up til now, we've had hot weather right up til mid march at least too, this year's been a shitty exception. It was cold enough this morning that I wished I'd worn a coat as well as a cardigan.

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

I'd swap that for the all the humidity up here to-day.

The Filth and The North Queensland Fury (King Boy Pato), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

so here we are in summer autumn

it is 21 16 degrees and raining

sex cells (S-), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah we had a run of gross hot humid weather, it was really not kosher.

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

utterly, utterly baffled by people complaining about the "cold"

this has been the best summer ever imo

haydens gonna hade (electricsound), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

God, we're all talking about the weather, can we be any more boring?

gnarly gnarlingtons in my life (Trayce), Monday, 28 February 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

Jim I like a bit of summer! Not 40deg scorchios, but at least some balmy evenings for gin consumption.

australian book prices are criminal, no doubt.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

i gave a US record co a serve the other day for having a release only available on itunes, and twice the price in AU compared to the US. they seemed surprised by this and said they would talk to their digital distributor. hopefully they weren't just palming me off, this sort of crap has been happening more frequently of late

swagenda (electricsound), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

not about books but seemed relevant somehow

swagenda (electricsound), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Autumn Alma Park Toilets (Schlafsack), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

yes

swagenda (electricsound), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

only available on itunes in AU that is. for no reason as the US co has 'rest of world' rights to it and it is not licensed here

swagenda (electricsound), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

so sick of this bullshit i tell you

swagenda (electricsound), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I was about to mention that Choice article. I can somewhat understand retaillers having to cover rent and aus wage costs. But no one can justify companies like Apple and Steam charging more for a totally non tangible product. Do they think we're backwards?

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)

Like sure, i dont want price demand being driven down meaning shop staff min wage here drops to $6 an hour like in the US. But these places need to adjust, by the same token.

And Gerry H4rvey and co can just fuck off.

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:18 (fourteen years ago)

the main reason books cost so much here is the distributors' bloated distribution chain. then there's parallel import restrictions which slam up the prices by eliminating the sort of competition that exists for anyone with access to a computer. without that crap clogging up the system the book i just bought from the uk could easily be sold in shops here for $30 and no retailer would lose a cent.

btw gerry harvey's flag-waving "BUY AUSTRALIAN SUPPORT AUSTRALIAN" wank can eat dicks

Autumn Alma Park Toilets (Schlafsack), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

it continues to amaze me that parallel book import restrictions still exist when (a) the internet has made them redundant and (b) actual book chains are actually going bankrupt directly because of the high prices

Autumn Alma Park Toilets (Schlafsack), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:26 (fourteen years ago)

eBooks, like mp3s, are gonna fuck with the whole game. Already are really. People are making a mint online with kindlebooks when they dont even see a publisher. Not sure thats a good thing but hey if people wanna pay to read unedited Ricean schlock then more power to them all.

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 27 May 2011 05:26 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty disappointed by the new FF

it's nice and glossy and not nec bad in any way, but the joy and wild abandon i liked about the first one is not so much in evidence

also i don't think monday morning was a good time to hear the last LCD album for the first time, because i am now convinced it sucks and everyone who likes it is a moron

swagenda (electricsound), Monday, 30 May 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

i think the FF might be a grower tho

swagenda (electricsound), Monday, 30 May 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

Tis Canberra-like weather. I like.

Geez I just got into the last FF album I didnt know a new one was up lol I'm so behind the curve

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Monday, 30 May 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

FF doesn't have a big hooky anthem like 'paris' or 'jump in teh pool' - i was vibing on the gloss a bit. sweet synths again. i'm assuming it'll be a grower too.

LCD rec is good! i think last track is a bit overrated tho.
