I am a slow-blooming Maiden fan; I've owned and loved Powerslave for years but many other aspects of metal culture, mostly due to bad associations with metal kids growing up, kept me from digging too deeply into their catalog as I was convinced that lurking under the surface of every metal band was a giant pile of racism waiting to ambush me. I've been trying to make up for that bit by bit over the past couple of years because I really, really LOVED Powerslave and knew I would totally dig these guys if I got over my neuroses and gave them a chance.

Powerslave is great. My favorite is probably Somewhere In Time, or Number of The Beast. But I pretty much like them all except for the stupid Blaze period that I don't talk about.

I like Maiden because it's pretty melodic, epic stuff for metal. It's not all grinding chucking riffs, they really get into big soaring hooks. and who else writes songs about 'The Prisoner', or puts Rime of The Ancient Mariner into a song.

and I like a lot of metal, but I feel like Maiden are really good way into metal for people who might think tehy don't like it, for that gloom or yeah the racism like you were wary of even. good nerdy metal like Maiden is pretty colorblind, thankfully :D

lol I have no problems with gloom whatsoever! (I pretty much diverted all of my metal tendencies into... industrial, which def has its own racism issues but often at a remove so distant that it rarely bothered me; also it just seemed easier to navigate who would be problematic and who wouldn't be, although I still didn't go to very many shows because, well...)
