Sitting in the middle of a shopping precinct with your feet in a fishtank and have lots of little fish going nim nim nim at the flaky skin bits, Classic or Dud?

Apparently, it's all the rage.

So, would you? Or would you not?

Mark G, Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

it's being banned in a lot of places...spreads disease allegedly.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:36 (fourteen years ago)

The very idea of this is disgusting.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)

Also, horrible thread title.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. im not sure what it refers to but ew.

i don't find it disgusting at all, how is it any worse than using any other scraping device or method?

for those who don't know, it refers to a beauty treatment where you put your feet in water with lots of this type of toothless fish that nibbles any dead skin off.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:51 (fourteen years ago)

Kind of a shit life for the fish was my main thought when I saw one of these places.

ka£ka (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:51 (fourteen years ago)

In fairness 'Scraping hard skin off your feet classic or dud?' would be a pretty disgusting thread as well even without the 'being eaten by fish' angle.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 March 2011 10:52 (fourteen years ago)

the fuck is wrong with this country...

The thought of sticking your feet into a tank of someone else's exfoliated detritus is pretty gross. Skin porridge innit.

ah here...they obviously use a diff tank or clean it between people! jesus

because it involves fish eating your skin?

Not as far as I could tell, it was just one saturday afternoon shopper after another at the place I saw.

ka£ka (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

goldfish shoals, nibbling at my toes

ledge, Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

because it involves fish eating your skin?

as opposed to what, a knife or an emery board or something? if it hurt less would it just be the concept of fish eating (dead) skin that would worry people?

personally i'm more curious as to how/why people need this. there isn't really much dead skin on my feet, the soles can go a bit hard or weather beaten if i'm somewhere hot or spending time on a beach, but not sure why i'd need to pay money to have the soles of my feet looking pristine.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

Of course they don't clear the tank between people, the amount of time it would take to remove the fish every time would be prohibitive.

Doubt anyone who does this is that concerned with how disgusting it is, admittedly.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

sort of feel this is one beauty treatment i can skip

there are only so many hours

conversely, i can't say flaky foot skin is a dealbreaker for me

this odyssey that refuses to quit calling itself (history mayne), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

not if they had more than one tank?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

you'd have to scoop the fish out and put them in a holding tank every time

it's no grosser than being in a swimming pool/putting your feet in the river

this odyssey that refuses to quit calling itself (history mayne), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:16 (fourteen years ago)

or showering after your flatmate

In some places you share a tank with 3 other customers.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

some illegal migrants are crammed 50 to a tank full of cheap japanese fish

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

Well, maybe not AIDS but it's entirely feasible that you're sharing a tank with someone who is going there for an alternative treatment for his verucas/athlete's foot/other fungal infection cos they were too embarrassed or whatever to go to the doctor.

ka£ka (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

i refer you to my above flatmate post

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

Customer Max Langton, from North London, said: ‘I had a pedicure from one of the new high street chains. I was put off when a man sitting opposite me said he had something wrong with his foot and hoped the fish were enjoying it.’

ka£ka (NickB), Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:32 (fourteen years ago)

this is pretty popular in SE asia. i put my hand in one once. it felt very weird.

rent, Thursday, 3 March 2011 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

Somewhere in the country there's at least one dude who's put his cock in the tank. Maybe not in a shopping centre admittedly.

How can it be unhygienic? The fish eat the skin, I've never noticed them barfing it back up again when I peer thru the window of our local piscine pedicurist.

Nulty By Nature (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 3 March 2011 12:11 (fourteen years ago)

there is a shop offering this service (which I don't fancy much) in Gateshead Metro Centre shopping mall. If it has made it this far into the provinces, then it is over. Last week, basically :(

lycanthrope electrif (Pashmina), Thursday, 3 March 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

There's a shop round the corner from our house doing it. Obv I give this craze another 3 months before the entire sewage infrastructure of the country is clogged with Cleaner Wrasse or whatever

Yeah, Pash, the kids saw that one. And the one in Reading.

Will let you know...

Mark G, Thursday, 3 March 2011 12:18 (fourteen years ago)

right, the kids did this last night, and said it was well cool, to which I deadpanned "you think they'd warm the water up"

Mark G, Friday, 4 March 2011 10:04 (fourteen years ago)

Must have been difficult to keep a straight face during that one, respect.

This can be done for free in the shallow water of any river or lake.

Something on R4 this morning about this being regulated, didn't listen to hard as I am averse to Rhona Cameron's seemingly ceaseless mithering.

She really did, I thought she sounded a bit medicated tbh.

four months pass...

This has taken off in a big way, it seems.

how long before it becomes one of those staples of "lol, the 2010's"?

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 09:12 (thirteen years ago)

There's a dedicated salon in our town now. Amazing. The Mrs wants to go. I'm not so sure...

It was a Thursday night. I was working late... (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

There was one, briefly, in Exeter's previously posh but now abandoned to the point of feeling post-apocalyptic shopping centre, Harlequinns. It didn't last long.

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 09:47 (thirteen years ago)

Is R Soles still a shoe shop in Brighton?

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 10:44 (thirteen years ago)

one year passes...

Well, that lasted a long time. That spot on "I remember 2011" is theirs..

There's one shop near here, but it's more a "nail bar and some fish" really.

Where have the fish gone? Are there rivers and estuaries where feet hungry fish roam for the chance to mildly nibble peds that have been coated in powdered Monster Munch?
