I'd give up choc to just keep beef or chicken or fish or pork. Hell I'd keep shellfish alone over chocolate.

BLOOMPS 2012 (rip van wanko), Monday, 7 March 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

i don't hate chocolate but i think i could never have it again and not even notice

vanilla friedman (electricsound), Monday, 7 March 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

chocolate is a momentary high. when i eat meat, i feel the high (and the reflux) all night.

hauntological-hysteric theater (get bent), Monday, 7 March 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

I hate how passionate some people get over ~~~~chocolateeeee~~~~, too many people treat it like the alpha and omega of sweet foods

otoh I could go without meat pretty easy too

the correct answer is bread/cheese

iatee, Monday, 7 March 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

any non-veg person who answers meat is actually insane

call all destroyer, Monday, 7 March 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

Tell it, sister. There are a few forms of chocolate I almost never have but enjoy the hell out of -- chocolate milkshakes come to mind -- but for life? Beef, all of the time.

Ps i was just tryin to shoehorn in a carnivorous angle, the 'high-horse' was a case of putting the cart before the horse, i know at this stage i'm shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted but it's horses for courses innit and you don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

oh it's all good darraghmac, I'm defensive about feeling high-horsey because my first 5 years or so veg I was pretty fuckin' high-horse, in fact you might say I horse the horse who horse horse horse the horse-man horse a lot

Considering the breadth of textures, flavors and nutrients covered in the category of 'meat', as compared to the category 'chocolate', I have no difficulty in choosing the first over the second. But if you polled 'plant products' against 'animal products', I would stan for veggies, fruits and grains, even though it cost me meat, eggs and cheese (*sob*).

Aimless, Thursday, 10 March 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

You know I could probably go without either of these and be totally happy, I think. I feel like eating chocolate maybe two or three times a year. I have been working meat out of my diet, too. At least I don't live with my family anymore. When my sister became a vegetarian my dad refused to talk to her for about a week after they had a big fight over it. "We have dominion over the animals! It says so in The Bible!" And my mom would brag to me that she would sneak chicken stock into her food. "That's why your sister likes my soup so much!" ;_; evil parents

Buff Orpington (Abbbottt), Thursday, 10 March 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

Never been wild for the flavor of chocolate, and it has become evident over time that it also devastates my intestines. Meat can too, in too large an amount, but oh the holy experience of a bowl of pho...

i have mad respect for vegs and vegans on the real it's just like - if you're a meat eater - and I am one, and i'm not partic proud of it but hey - why on earth would you like chocolate more than meat - makes no sense

again the problem isn't ideological it's that i'm growing out of my 5 year old child taste in food, used to hate vegetables

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 March 2011 05:11 (fourteen years ago)

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 March 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

as I just posted on the cookery thread, I am making pork belly tonight, so to claim vegetarianism as a choice I would 'rather make' is disingenuous rising to hypocritical

nonetheless there are grey areas. I only buy free-range poultry and eggs and my gf and I have said that we want to cut down on meat, only eating it a few times a week, hopefully descending to once or twice a fortnight. the best meal I've made so far here is cheesy pasta, for instance - so good it's been done 3x so far. now, we have not made large steps towards this goal yet - this is because we both love meat and have not reached a sufficient level of enlightenment that would cause us to renounce it. our meat-eating concerns are related to ethical farming and energy sustainability rather than the conscious decision not to eat flesh. we're both intending to study buddhism (she already has, to quite an extent) and the hope is that this will cut our meat consumption right down (we were discussing this earlier, in fact). but the status quo is that meat is ok to eat, as long as the animal wasn't kept in a tiny cage and malnourished.

this said, the conditions pigs are kept in before slaughter probably aren't great either. enlighten me, someone!

acoleuthic, Thursday, 10 March 2011 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

how long are you planning on staying in nz for lj?

iatee, Thursday, 10 March 2011 05:31 (fourteen years ago)

cheesy pasta might be more ethically sound but it sure isn't more healthy!

iatee, Thursday, 10 March 2011 05:33 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha jim it doesn't say anything about staying healthy in my post ;)

'cheesy' is overstating it a bit. there's about 200g of parmesan grated in, lots of olive oil, basil etc - it's incredible and yeah I love carbs

I am in intense training and after particularly savage workouts/races I indulge on 1/4 gallon of chocolate milk and a double cheeseburger immediately upon completion.

My GI becomes a veritable mass of chocolate meat.

chocolate over meat any day, but it has to be dark chocolate, not that milk nonsense (and white "chocolate" isn't even chocolate and also it is disgusting)

Sara R-C, Thursday, 10 March 2011 07:47 (fourteen years ago)

Now if this were chocolate v. cheese... that would be a much closer contest for me

Sara R-C, Thursday, 10 March 2011 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

nobody ever thinks about the ethics of veganism from the POV of an orphaned baby carrot

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 March 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not even that carnivorous, but meat - my sweet tooth is a v minor part of my palate these days. plus, meat would cover seafood, yeah?

Also I'm certain my dad has put meat in stuff he's made me. I mean he's a German chef for Christ's sake. I don't think he'd do it on purpose to be sneaky but he probably wouldn't tell me if a soup he's made has a little bacon in it or is made with chicken stock. I usually remember to ask and then he'll fess up but after 17 years of being a non-meat eater I've become sort of lax about checking on those types of things and will often adopt a sort of don't ask don't tell policy when eating out in a restaurant or at other people's houses.

pretty much the same situation here. I was supremely fussy about food as a kid and ate no veg (and not much of anything else) until my 20s, but always sympathised very much with the veggie/vegan ethical position. I just couldn't realistically drop anything from a diet that consisted of very little anyway.

once I finally managed to ditch all my weird food foibles and broaden my diet, I was able to ditch the meat too. been pescatarian (aiming for full veggie, maybe vegan - one step at a time) about a year now. don't miss meat at all.
