The most controversial year of the last twenty, no? Lots of wags wondered whether Jack Palance, still worn out after the previous year's pushups, mistakenly read Marisa Tomei's name.

Voted for Judy Davis over Redgrave -- my favorite supporting performance in an Allen movie, and one of the classic she-wuz-robbed moments in Academy history.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

"My Cousin Vinnu" would have been one mindfuck of a movie

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

My Cousin Vishnu

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

like, instead of Joe Pesci, I am seeing the dude who plays Gupta on "Outsourced"

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

Talvin Singh scored the film.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

haha

of course the only movie I've seen here is "My Cousin Vinny" because I am a film philistine

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

My Cousin Vinny rules.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

It's a hell of a lot less boring than the other movies these ladies were nominated for.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed.

Youts!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha yes

The two youts.

husbands and wives is actually p funny and good if yall get sick of being contrarian

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not being contrarian! I like Husbands and Wives just fine and never said I didn't.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

ps Tomei deserved to win the Oscar simply for agreeing to appear on screen in this crushed velvet one piece monstrosity:

you said it was boring

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

Judy Davis could have played that scene.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

Judy Davis could have been in every movie here.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

my cousin vinny is p hilarious tho im not gonna lie 2 u

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

judy davis wouldv been p lousy in mcv

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

okay I am having problems placing Judy Davis so my treacherous brain has instead substituted Judi Dench into MCV

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

shes in like everything

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

Imagine her digging her heel into that wooden porch as she reminds Pesci about her biological clock.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

I looked at Wikipedia's list of '92 films hoping to find an alternate suggestion--I've only seen Husbands and Wives, and don't have any special regard for the film or Davis's perfomance (I'm not knocking it, she's very good, it just didn't do much for me). Couldn't find anything.

clemenza, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

I sometimes forget that there was a time when women had to be British to be nominated for this crap.

Darin, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

Happily, The King's Speech put an end to all of that.

clemenza, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but c'mon.... three nominees???? All those E.M. Forster books were really fucking with the oscars for a few years there.

Darin, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 06:49 (fifteen years ago)

Three limeys, one Australian.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

Thank fuck Vanessa Redgrave didn't win it is all I can say. Marisa all the way.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

Vanessa Redgrave was funnier and handsomer than Tomei, and wore better floral print clothes!

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

She's a total blind spot to me, I can see no use for or merit in her whatsoever

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

Miranda Richardson's performance in Damage is fking amazing, so that. Husbands and Wives isn't very good.

jed_, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

I liked it at the time, but she's too young for a part that consists of just one freakout scene.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

I saw "My Cousin Vinny" and liked it a lot.

And when I heard she won the oscar for that performance, I went yes.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

Did punch the air? Or anything/anyone else?

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

Did you punch the air.... bollocks

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

The only blah performances are Tomei and Plowright's, although I haven't seen Enchanted April since '92. They're not terrible work, but any young actress and any old English biddy respectively could have played those parts.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

No I did not punch the bollocks, this was some years afterwards.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

xpost yeah, but then any old shuffling, embarrassed head-teacher of old could have done Colin Firth's part, so hey,.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

I agree!

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

colin farrell won some oscar?

plax (ico), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

oh colin firth

voted Redgrave although that movie is terrible apart from her. i half suspect they surrounded her with terrible actors just to make her performance seem better.

Emma Thompson is a terrible actress?
