Proper summer attire = drink with some kind of fruit in it + big straw hat

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

yesssssssss

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

That's kinda aspirational fyi because I plan to spend as much time as possib this summ the motherfucking beach. Also I like giant hats.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

I like giant hats too.

Shorts on men are fine if it's hot out and they're casual shorts
Formal shorts on men = NO
Ladies in shorts = OK I guess but not my thing personally. I prefer skirts.

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

whats with the dudes in their adidas slide on sandals. hey dude, you are not in college shower anymore.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

back to my original question on angry thread. do girls still wear sundresses like Harriet Wheeler.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

how do you wear a drink

like, do you throw it on yrself or are you carrying it in strategic locations or what

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

or am I underestimating the size of the big hat

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

i dont wear drinks, i drink my like Bodhi from Point Break.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

"proper" summer attire? you mean like -- seersucker, linen suits, cotton neckties? or is this "proper" something else

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

as in whats proper for men/women to wear formal or informal.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

you realize "proper" implies formality right

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

Wimmin be wearin sundresses all over the place here, but I have heard from peeps in non-NYC places that dresses are much rarer so I dunno.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

I am worried that Elmo is here. I feel like he might endorse shorts as formal wear. :/

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

grammar my ass.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

I plan on wearing long strapless dresses all summer long. Well, when not at work. That wouldn't really be appropriate here.

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

one day last summer i tried to go shirtless while mowing the lawn, my wife yelled out to me that i was scaring the neighbors.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:39 (fourteen years ago)

this ain't grammar, that's just the established connotation of the word you chose to describe apparel xp

I think "proper" can also mean right vs wrong in a given situation. Maybe that's a slightly British usage, though.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think summer shoes are tricky.

My standard go to shoe for skirts is a ballet flat because most of my skirst are simple a-line above the knee jobs and I think flats work with those. I get tripped up by sandals because a lot of them are just really awful.

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

If I worked for The Man, I'd wear long pants in hot weather. Freelancing from home, I stick with shorts from May through September, except for the odd occasion where I need to be a little more presentable.

WmC, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

eh elmo, lets not make a big deal about it. lets talk summer attire.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

x-post - that's fine

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

i wear a lot of ben sherman in the summer.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

I used to say I hate shorts and sandals, so usually it's t-shirt, jeans & maybe even a hoody - the same as any other time of year. But this year I think I'm going with:

V excited for summer attire this year. Dresses will be bought/sewn!

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

I am v excited about it too for some reason. I am already planning.

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

What are Formal shorts on men?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough -- summer is tough. i might end up taking some pants to the tailor to make into shorts -- cutoffs are fine but I'd like to be a little more polished this go 'round.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

i wear shorts all summer

i like boxy pleated shorts in neutral colors with bright polo shirts or cotton t shirts i like linen pants cuffed high worn with soft cotton oxfords i never wear socks. i like thin cashmere crew necks in black & navy worn with white tennis shorts when it gets cold by the water at night, i like polished chestnut cordovan oxfords worn with slim-fitting canvas trousers or striped bob cousy los in simple light colors. i like vintage sunglasses and loose-fitting knits and church's shoes in girls makeup shadings. i like thin leather belts with baggy khaki shorts worn high on the waist paired with pastel gingham dress shirts. i like tailored men's dress shirts with bold stripes worn under summerweight wool suits, buckshot brogues and no socks. i like hunter green raincoats when it starts to get cloudy and bleached canvas duffels stuffed with 70s beach towels.

millions now eating will never diet (Lamp), Thursday, 10 March 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

Not a huge fan of sandals just because the city streets can be so gross in the summer, but otherwise honestly sandals are lovely...for other people. I hate this gladiator shit so I haven't bought sandals in a few years because EVERYTHING HAS BEEN LIKE THAT.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

ok, this needs to turn into a WDYLL thread in a few months

xpost

rockapads, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

I usually go buy pants at J. Crew or banana republic to bring them home and cut them off. Shorts are rarely the length so I sometime will get them hemmed or leave hem frayed. Are those formal shorts?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

and I seriously have no doubt that you can pull all of that off because you know about these things

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

x-post no

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

Lamp's personal wdyll maybe! Would pageview.

xp JS: Are you wearing them to your office job/and or dinner with the in-laws?

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah what are those gladiator sandals. my wife despises those.

if your paying $85 for a pair of pants and then making shorts out of them, i call you crazy.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

oh wait - post above the no was to Lamp

ENBB, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

I want to see how elmo's tailored shorts come out, too

these are the "sandals" i want to buy:

http://www.shoesoftheday.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/sanuk_mens_vagabond.jpg

I'm lucky enough to be allowed to wear shorts and sandals to work during the summer if I want so I may just live in these things. I'm super looking forward to summer this year for some reason, too.

rockapads, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

How long or short do you guys feel guys shorts should be? I like mine above the knee and sometimes mid thigh if I'm feeling good. I also like to roll up pants and wear oxfords.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

This is such a Friday thread. I like it even though it pains me that it is not ACTUALLY Friday.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

if your paying $85 for a pair of pants and then making shorts out of them, i call you crazy.

who said $85? $10 at most, thrifted.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

i need to get my leather sandals repaired, too. hm.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 10 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's my year for summer clothes refresh, I will probably wait until there's some online sale and buy a few. Buying clothes in stores sounds like effort.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

like laurel said though, you got to try those on...the fit is tough on some of them.

you can also score some nice ones: http://www.penguinclothing.com/penguin-shirt.html

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

I also love Penguin. I'm so predictable.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of fucking hate polo shirts, so I have a lot of alternatives.

I also have a couple cotton floral print long-sleeve lightweight shirts that I roll the sleeves up on for the summer.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

You know how guys are always talking about waiting for girls to break out the shorts and stuff? I wait for guys to break out these shirts. Yay summer.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

ditto on polo. it's a lazy look to me & sorta comments on the wannabe-gentry that oft wears it... usually college kids.

buy all my button ups in 16 3/4, tho admittedly the look is p loose on me and a couple girls call my ~steeze~ unflattering. i just hate being confined by anything... clothes, really.

yeah (kelpolaris), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeah (kelpolaris), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

summer business casual in my office = everyone in ill-fitting polo shirts, the company-branded ones are actually better than most. ugh.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

Pro-polo shirt here but again, only if fitted and tucked in.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

i wear polos to work on occassion, out of laziness in the summer.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

In the summer, I mostly wear jeans with boots and hanes white v necks. When I wear shorts it's usually on sundays.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

My favorite pair of shorts are by Hyden Yoo. But most of my friends snicker at me when I wear them. I like shorter shorts and don't understand why they are so frowned upon on guys.

i have a hard time finishing short sleeve shirts that I actually like so I am a big sleeve roller up. It starts out neat but it ends up scruffy.

Yeah, reminds me of some jeans I was looking at on the levis site, they definitely photoshopped shit because in half of the tighter cuts you'd be able to tell which side a guy dresses to instantly.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

shorts at or above the knee, narrow legs, no cargos ever.
topsiders or cvos, no sandals/flops ever.
short sleeve plaids, rolled sleeve ocbds over tshirts, polos, everything fits.
$15 aviators because they do not float and i don't do croakies.

Kerm, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

Really guys? No I'm not gay at all.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

Me neither, I am just "fashion forward"

Other days I just don't give a fuck and I wear v-necks and shorts and flip flops

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

I've always wanted to wear flip flops, but a childhood accident left me without my big toe on one feet. I tried to wear them between the next two little toes, but it doesn't work.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, it definitely wouldn't. I'd imagine closed shoes would balance your foot out a little better, too. I know a guy who lost a toe as a kid and it led to some nasty joint wear in his 60s from years of unconsciously balancing.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

For the record, Magnum PI was the shit, NBA players used to look 10 feet tall, and everybody got laid in the era of short shorts on dudes.

Kerm, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

shoes are always a problem, mostly because one foot is a size smaller. I mostly wear cowboy boots or topsiders though.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 10 March 2011 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

I'd like to hear about the accident!

I was four and at my grandmother's farm. My aunt was mowing the lawn and the back of my grandmother's house is one long porch. I don't remember it well, but as my aunt was coming around the corner I jumped off the back porch and slide underneath the mower. My foot was cut off and mangled very badly. and hung by a piece of skin. My big toe was lost. I have a massive scar that wraps around the back of my foot and curls under it. I only remember the drive to the hospital, and that they had wrapped my foot in towels which were drenched with blood. I thought I was in trouble because there was blood on my grandmother's car seats.
