AIDS Dissenters

They say that HIV does not cause AIDS. They say that AIDS is multifactorial. They say that AZT's toxicity is responsible for the deaths of thousands and thousands of misinformed patients. They say that drug companies suppress information and studies that would threaten their billion-dollar business. They say that poppers (nitrates) cause Kaposi's Sarcoma. They say that the AIDS epidemic in Africa is actually starvation and wasting disease with a new name. They say that over 90 percent of AIDS cases are men, most belonging to specific at risk groups such as intravenous drug users and homosexuals with weakened immune systems from other infections cause by inordinate numbers of sexual encounters. They count Nobel Prize winners and the discoverer of the HIV virus among their ranks. If you want to read more of what they have to say, Virus Myth is a good place to start. There is a considerable archive of medical literature, media articles and book lists if you are interested. At the very least, something interesting to consider, right?

they overstate their case, I think. i mean, they raise some interesting points - why the African AIDS pandemic while AIDS in Europe and North America remains largely concentrated in high risk groups. But enough HIV infected intravenous drug users have gone on to develop and die of AIDS for me to find it hard to believe there is no causal link. i suspect there might be something to the idea that AIDS is multifactorial, that something else triggers HIV to cause AIDS to develop in someone.

I'd take these AIDS heresy positions more seriously if they weren't often being peddled by loathsome rightwingers for blatantly political reasons.

this reminds me of the unexpected results we got from googling (infamous mathematician) se*ge la*g...

I am a good aquaintance of the scientist leading this brigade. I don't think he has any credibility whatsoever and it's obvious he is entirely motivated by petty politics, but some of these suspicions seem valid to me. I am particularly interested in whether death rates in the countries particularly "ravaged by AIDS" are actually increasing at all, or if terminal conditions related to malnutrition and poor sanitation are being classified as AIDS-related for political reasons. Seems to me HIV infection in these cases could be a result of immune dysfunction, rather than the cause.

Kris: yes. Has to do with social organization and epidemiological vectors for disease transmission -- migrant or travelling populations with high fluidity in relationships (such as much of S.A.'s industrial workforce between bantustan and job) with a high marginal population provides different social vectors. The causation link is well established for the HIV=AIDS question and the effects are real.

Yes to what?

Kris, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"are increasing at all".

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Particularly can be seen by HIV rates in the industrial workforce (where employers track because they care) which may in fact be higher than the population as a whole.

kris: which scientist are you talking about? duesberg? can you elaborate? this is interesting because robert gallo's credibility is also very poor and he's the one who declared HIV=AIDS.
