The best thing about Ayingerbrau is...

... it doesn't give you anywhere near as bad a hangover as other lager.

Discuss.

Matt DC, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What other lager?

Tom, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nonsense. lager is evil anyway,

gareth, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with gareth - lager is Satan's Own Brew. i will no longer drink it except in moderation, as it makes me ILL. although, having said that i am UNFAIRLY hung over on a mere 3 pints of bitter! what the fun is all that about then?

katie, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

surely the best thing about Ayingerbrau is the lederhosen-clad man in the little glass box?

michael, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

another good thing about ayingerbrau = it costs less than two quid. after paying over twelve quid for four pints of stella it was a real relief to walk into the lyceum last night and pay way less for nicer beer.

toby, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"surely the best thing about Ayingerbrau is the lederhosen-clad man in the little glass box?"

No, that is the second best thing about Ayingerbrau. On the other hand, if every pint came with a free jolly Teutonic fat man with a big white beard, it would be the best thing ever.

Matt DC, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...until you woke up with them all in yr bed the next morning, that is!

MarkH, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with markH, the best thing is def when you wake up in bed with all next day

mark s, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie, if you will drink expensive 5% bottled bitter, you will pay ver price.

That ILx pilgrimage is in order for sure. Perhaps we could work out an innovative twinning project between a town and a loose community of web-based mantalists?

Graham, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mantalists = mentalists who drive 1970s Opel coupés?

MarkH, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would it be controversial to suggest that the Ayingerbrau lovingly prepared for our delectation in Tadcaster, Yorks, may not be quite identical to that brewed in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps?

There's a distressing lack of fat men on the Ayinger site.

Tim, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

.... it is confined to Sam Smith's pubs and cannot escape from there.

Ed, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me = fule

Graham, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

here is another

mark s, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Astangabrau more.

DV, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Before the next FAP I have to work out a way to make everyone drink D. The ensuing and unavoidable RUIN would surely be enormously enjoyable.

Tim, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tim, what is *takes deep breath, thinking all the while "dare i ask?"* D?

(ps point taken re. expensive bottled beer. i did have a proper pint also though!)

katie, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Must go to next FAP, foil plans with non-beer drinking ways.

jel --, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing about it is listening to people trying to pronounce its name after a few pints of the stuff.

And, of course, the little man in the plastic box.

Alex M, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie, there are four varieties of Aying's finest sold by S. Smtih in the UK:

1. Ayingerbrau: the Fat Man of legend. 2. Hefe-Weiss: rather pleasant cloudy wheat beer, yum 3. Pils: bit stronger thaN Ayingerbrau but not as fearsome as: 4. D. Phear the D! Strong pils, it slips down like pop but has almost ciderish loopyjuice quality.

Ich bin ein Ayinger.

Tim, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's also 'Prinz'. is that made by the same people? where would that fit on your scale?

michael, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Prinz is the Pils, yes?

Sam Smiths Organic Lager is what happens when the 'Jolly German' ceases to oversee S. Smith production.

Tom, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa - Prinz! Now we're messing with the big boys.

N., Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes unfortunately Tim slipped up there as the Pils id the D = D Pils. And Prinz is the mid ground lager.

I always ask for Fatman - cos he is.

Pete, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Back when I drank beer, I used to like Sam Smiths' 'Natural' lager (ie made with spring water fresh from the snow-fed slopes...) - is that the same as Organic?

How did the Lyceum work out for FAP purposes?

Andrew L, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I stand corrected. I think Prinz is also a pils though, isn't it Pete? I don't frink any of this stuff (apart from Hefe-Weiss), obv.

Tim, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

waho! with the bouzing and the falling over...

mark s, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was

grebt

for bouzing purposes! apart from friendly but slightly slow barman. but i sympathise with all bar staff who have to put up with us lot...

katie, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

another example of knowing a pub reasonably well but not knowing it's name. The Lyceum Tavern = "the one with the comfy nooks in it near waterloo bridge" to me n pals.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel - you will be surprised, but I had orange juice all night and foiled things and stuff

Anna, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

foiled things

Heroin?

Graham, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and there's always ahathabrau.

angela, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or asivinanderbrau.

my sides.

DV, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
i drink ayingerbrau every day it is perfect to get you pissed and at only £1.45 a pint in my local i cant dispair at the price ( though i am biased i do work in a sam smiths pub)

Jon Conroy, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

What a timely revival given tomorrow's festivities...

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah but Tim the D you referred to above led directly to mine and Ktee's best hangover ever. No ruin there.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Best??? Canhangover's egoo? Surely they're only bad or absent?

Graham (graham), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
At the next Sam Smith's FAP, I think I might experiment with a pint of D.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"experiment".

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Drink", then. And then "never touch ever again", probably.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel honour bound to remind you that the very pump the D flows from has the wise words 'HALF PINT' branded upon it. Ignore them at your peril.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that most beer pumps had half pint on and poured with two presses?

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, why did no one ever draw my attention to the existence of the Ayinger Hotel?!! We must go!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Not written on the front, Chris.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The staff look like the biggest happiest family ever!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

D is only 5.9% ABV.

.., Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Ayingerbrau surprisingly nice, in the summer, on the two occasions a year I drink lager.

Perhaps I should attempt a higher strength lager each year. D-FAP June 2006??

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, ouchie

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
According to this thread, tomorrow is the two-year anniversary of my first ever FAP. Revive, in honour of the Jolly German and all the joy he has since given me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I no longer agree with my first statement on this thread, however. God that was bollocks.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that's because you only drink that D stuff nowadays ;)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ayingerbrau is a gateway drink...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah it's a bit fresher now, so I don't have to drink poxy lager and get calf-cramps at 3 in the morning.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent a rather pleasant night once on the D. I think. I was not apprised of its magical properties beforehand.

robster (robster), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

a strange comment from gareth: "nonsense. lager is evil anyway," at the top, seeing as i have have never seen him drink anything else.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

he are sadist

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I only really see Gareth drinking bitter. Occasionally he'll get himself a pint of Litovel or something and then complain about how much he dislikes it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hefe-Weiss tastes of GORN OFF banana antibiotics, ugh!

dry your eyes mate!, Friday, 13 August 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Matt, you first met me at a FAP when I was stone cold sober! What are the chances etc etc.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)
