Nha Trang for Vietnamese

69 Bayard (located at, er, 69 Bayard) is crazy inexpensive, very fast, and the *perfect* ultra-late night place to shamble your drunk ass to after hours of serious heavyweight drinking. Order anything over rice or chow fun (especially chow fun) and tears will come to your eyes. It's not exactly great food, but it's exactly what you need at 4am.
Can't miss the place, there's one dollar bills taped to all the walls.

chinese-style japanese-style chinese soup is otm. there's a lot over here in HK and they are all pretty awful. luckily there are a few legit ramen shops here. but I suppose it's not bad at the right price point

great NY noodletown on the bowery is one of my fave restaurants in all of new york, cheap (maybe not for chinatown, but for eating out in the city), delicious, fast, rarely any way. get anything with duck in it, but especially the duck w/ flowering chives and the duck e-foo noodle

off the top of my head as a regular enough nyc tourist, uncle lou is really nice cantonese, great ny noodletown mentioned upthread is still there but not been in a while, was always great back in the day. taiwan pork chop house is very cheap and very good, was there in august. was also at dim sum palace (i went to east village one but think there's one in chinatown) and really enjoyed that.
thai diner is newer and a bit more upscale or expensive but thought it was v good also. not chinese or chinatown but nearby i also like saigon social for vietnamese food.

Kam Hing coffee shop on Baxter St for desserts, esp if she's gonna be here for Lunar New Year
Of the old classics don't skip Congee Village (Chinatown-adjacent, technically LES) but many of these places (Green Bo etc) are tourist traps imho

Is Bahn Mi Saigon Bakery on Grand St still good? I loved it years ago.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 30 December 2024 14:26 (four days ago) link
if this is her first time i wouldn't worry too much, everything is gonna taste good.
but if she wants something a little less "cheap eats" and more of a contemporary vibe then i'd say potluck club or phoenix palace (owned by the same people iirc)
if she's on tiktok she'll probably have heard of mei lai wah and wah fung. former can be worth it, latter definitely not, both have long lives pretty much 24/7 now
finally mission chinese is back, they are in 'pop-up' mode but keep on extending the end date afaict so who knows when it'll end

If it’s food she wants, put her on a subway out to Flushing. A trip in itself
― calstars, Monday, 30 December 2024 14:35 (four days ago) link
xp banh mi saigon is the uh, least-good banh mi in chinatown imo... i think people like it because of the mystique of 'the sandwich shop that's in the back of a jewelry store', this notion of chinatown being full of literally hidden speakeasy gems, but it's all sandwich shop and no jewelry store really
banh mi co ut on elizabeth has banh mi that approaches viet food in other cities with a more vibrant viet population... so successful they opened a full restaurant on chrystie, kitchen co ut which is also good
saigon on broome is also better than banh mi saigon imo although i think they came close to closing down for good earlier this year so idk if they're still around

Thanks for those recommendations on bahn mi.
I rarely get into Manhattan Chinatown when Flushing Chinatown is so much closer for me. It's been close to 10 years at this point.

If I win the lottery, I am going to buy myself a pied-a-terre in Flushing.I have never been to Flushing, but after 4 years without easy access to good Chinese food, I am willing to make the leap.
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 30 December 2024 15:26 (four days ago) link
quincie, you are closer to the SGV than Flushing, iirc, which is reputed to have the best Chinese food in the country.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 30 December 2024 15:33 (four days ago) link
True, but the drive suuuuucks. Given that I’ll have won the lottery and can therefore fly private (airport 10 minutes away), getting to Flushing would be a much more pleasant journey.

Flushing is the place to be, it's true. even if you only have 2 days in NYC spend one of them in Central Park/Met museum and the other in Flushing imo

quincie, here is hoping you win :)

re: uncle lou's it was set up specifically to be an elevated version of the corner takeout joint where there's 700 things on the menu so take a party if possible.

oh if she doesn't want to leave manhattan i would get the liangpi noodles from x'ian famous foods (there are better options in flushing, but)
she should make sure she is wearing a top she doesn't give a shit about that day
― Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 31 December 2024 02:49 (three days ago) link
Yeah xian is good, wouldn’t be my first choice but
― calstars, Tuesday, 31 December 2024 02:54 (three days ago) link
agree, i wouldn't know where to get better liangpi noodles in manhattan/how many other american cities have them. maybe lots? it's something to try.

idk if to post this here or redd's roster but the shuttered New Yeah! Shanghai Deluxe with the fucking moat in the middle of the dining room that you had to cross a bridge over to get to your table was something else
The old Yeah! Shanghai Deluxe is still there but doesn't have that to recommend it for
