I'll Have That One That One and That One

Just went shopping. Walked straight into a Vodafone shop, pointed at three phones and said "I'd like that one, that one and that one please". It was great - the assistant looked at me like I was either a lottery winner or a mentalist (actually I needed them for work and the client's paying).

What's the most extravagant/absurd thing you've ever gone into a shop to buy?

I don't have a credit card, so when I bought my new Powerbook I paid for it in cash. (this is New York so no one batted an eye but I felt mighty odd)

my friend went into that Evolution store in New York and walked out with an $800 paper-mache-looking model of a GOAT...

I had to buy a leather/rubber gimp mask once.

Definition of absurd: paying full price for a CD -- any CD.

I guess buying my laptop was quite extravagent.

And in a few years ago I bought an old school CD recorder for £200 cash. I bought it at lunchtime, and kept it under my desk and then had to carry it all the way home along the creepy canal.

I guess that's as near as I get to extravagent.

I once visited every sex shop in York searching for a cat-o-nine- tails style whip (they were all too wussy for the (theatrical) purpose as it happened) and some square-headed nails (actually I went to a hardware store for these).

two christmases in a row, my mother told me that all she really wanted was comfortable underwear. i begged and pleaded for alternatives, but she claimed she couldn't think of anything. this year i didn't even ask and just bought her the new Maeve Binchy, as i could no longer take the stares from other women in various department stores.

Actually, the most outlandish thing I've ever purchased was probably a pair of royal purple lycra boxer-briefs that say "Mr. Happy" on the waistband. It was at a Prince show, natch.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you're just adding that Prince show mention to distract attention from the fact that your entire wardrobe doubtless consists of nothing but those boxer-briefs.

I once visited every sex shop in York

I didn't realise York was awash with sex shops. Full of 'quaint' tea rooms last time I was there.

I've gone into a music shop on more than one occasion and bought a $2500 guitar with cash. Madness.

Probably my car. I was incredibly nervous buying one by myself because of all the "if you're a young woman buying a car by yourself you're going to get ripped off!" talk from people, and i probably did. But then I got to slap my apple computer sticker on the back & take off on my first solo roadtrip, so it was a good experience anyway. First CD played in it: Chemical Brothers, Surrender.

tom why did ya buy three mobiles?

nath, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

York definitely isn't awash with sex shops. Which made it all the more hard to find that elusive 'just right' whip...

Archel, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

NEW York, on the other hand...

Pyth, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the sex shops're up and the sex shops're down.

RJG, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got a fourth!!

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Will you be actually using any of these properly eh??

Sarah, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes for the latest one. The other 3 aren't strictly mine and so I'll be keeping them nice and safe and not taking them to pubs etc.

Hopefully I'll also now be able to get my normal one working too.

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

He'll be losing them on a regular basis, or getting people to break them for him...

Pete, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i paid for my digital camera a few weeks ago in cash. (i am so boring)
