saw this last night. very nostalgic, some funny moments, some lovely scenes/bits of dialogue, but its too wes anderson-y for my liking (if you like WA you will prob love it), ie quite self consciously quirky and delicate, rather superficial all in all. good performances but its all very surface. plus i hate paddy considine when he does his 'loveably dappy/dopey' shtick. its not that loveable or funny. alex turners songs are ok. though quite a few of them seemed to be trying too hard for profundity rather than the nice line in everyday observations he does with the AMs. the film does have some great titles though. that was prob my favourite part.

The book is well worth a read, too. The plot of it does meander about and I'd like to see what the film retains.

Just watched this, really loved it. Not a Wes Anderson fan - found this far more charming than WA films. wish they'd just used The Clientele rather than Alex Turner, though.

i watched this tonight - i liked it! quite funny, weird in a relatable, unforced way (for the most part - there were a few 'too charming' moments, but not nec cringeworthy). really liked the characterization and the acting, esp the parents.

Does this have the horrible greyhound-killing scene from the book?
― not bulimic, just a cat (James Morrison), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 08:14 (fourteen years ago)
it was well done, but i couldn't help feeling like i've seen this kind of thing a few times before already.

I had to pee like five times watching this. I did like the acting and I lol'd a few times. I hated the music.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 12:22 (fourteen years ago)
no dogs were killed in this filmthe music was quite, um, fey, which was fine in certain scenes but i found intrusive/unnecessary in many others. the friend i went with loved it though! which was unexpected.

I kind of hated this film. Think the boy came off as an idiot, whereas at least in the novel you get inside his head a bit. The tone felt all over the place, like it didn't know whether to be Wes Anderson or Bill Forsyth or just simply LOL80s. Considine has never been so bad.

i thought this exact same thing.
titles so Godard.

Got down with this a little while ago. Liked it, but I'm a sucker for this kinda stuff.
Weird bit of business: While watching, was thinking they'd made the Brit equilvalent of a Michael Cera vehicle. And then he's one of the first people thanked in the credits.
Thought the Alex Turner stuff detracted. Would have rather had them go w/an all-vintage soundtrack.

no dogs were killed in this film
you LIED! Dog was run over by train, immediately after main character planned poisoning it.

it wasn't premeditatively killed by a person! maybe that is what i meant.

I liked this. Thought Sally Hawkins' perf was nicely understated - the sad-sack father was good too.

Submarine is better than Bottle Rocket, so lets hope that Ayode's next film is as good as Rushmore. What is he doing next, btw?

Nice ambition, good Eisenberg... but obvious and hollow, ultimately.

this is a very bad movie
― schlump, Saturday, 18 October 2014 04:28 (eleven years ago)
I saw him do a Q&A after a screening of The Double and he got quite miffed about the comparisons to Brazil. He reckoned Roy Andersson and Aki Kaurismäki were his real influences
― Number None, Saturday, 18 October 2014 10:43 (eleven years ago)
Well I don't esp blame him -- aside from the dystopian element (really, just Life) and the production design, there's no room for theoretical heroism here like there usually is with Gilliam, especially in Brazil.

(I don't believe i've seen a single thing Ayoade has been part of til now)
