last night, and the night before that, i died in my dream. this happened pretty often when i was a kid, every month or two maybe, but as an adult it's been pretty rare. it had been a few years, at least until this past weekend.
when i die in my dreams, i really die. i don't wake up just before the fateful moment. instead, i feel the life ripped out of me, and it's painful, and terrifying. last night i heard a distorted low voice speaking to me as the breath flew out of my chest and it scared the shit out of me.
another weird thing is that when i die in my dreams, my instinct is usually to to pray to god and beg for forgiveness, and that's usually the last thing i think or say before the breath gets sucked out. but in real life, i've almost died a few times, and sauron lord of the rings is the last thing on my mind (don't believe in god during my waking hours).
tell me your interesting stories about dying in your dreams!

The most vivid dream I ever had in this regard was as an adult. A dream of getting shot through the head. I heard two shots, saw my friend fall down & then felt a searing heat boring through my head in distorted car-accident style slowed speed. Felt myself fall & vision went red & then black. I knew I was dead, I met this knowledge with a grim sense of resignation. Then I realized I was cognizant I was dead – so I was cognizant in some regard after death. Did this mean I had been lying to myself and God was real? If so, I was surely going to Hell. So as I had acknowledged I was about to enter Hell, I woke up.

i've always witnessed my death as a third party observer when it's happened, or I've woken myself up as it was happening.
I dreamed once a neo-nazi dude barbecued me and I watched my body roasting on a spit, sizzling....was pretty creepy

I had a different dream that I was getting stabbed through the back of my neck over and over again, until I died. But in death I said to the person stabbing me, as they continued to do so, "I am dead now, you can no longer cause me pain." "Oh yeah?" they said. Then the pain of being stabbed return, but more forceful and hypervivid, with being able to see and hear the sensation of being stabbed,. Also I had gained a truer sense of death so I could no longer speak, just rue having spoken in the first place.

i hate to admit it, but usually I'm the one killing people in my dreams. In the last year, I've had an unusually high number of dreams where I'm inflicting violence on people. when I was a kid I used to dream about murdering people. and not in a justified way. I remember dreaming I killed some kid over a petty ILX-level argument and spent the rest of the day upset, worried that the cops would find out.

I had a dream I hanged myself and I was watching a little girl get murdered as I died, and the moment I died she turned up to look at me. That one I woke from crying.

I have a recurring dream where I'm driving on a hilly country road -- pleasant and scenic. I come to the top of a blind hill and suddenly the road is gone -- everything's gone -- the car is plunging through space. The first time I woke up as soon as I started falling, but the 2 or 3 times since then, the dream has continued and I'm falling through clouds, figuring "this could take a while, might as well enjoy the ride down." Sometimes a bird goes past. I haven't actually died in any of these yet.

that, right there, is pretty much what happens every time with me. the realization that you've died, and you're still thinking, and then (if you're awake in real life) the darkness of the room, the creepy silence...it's just apparent that well, no, there's no heaven, and the best chance you have is maybe it's purgatory or something? the blind walk to the light switch, then just standing there like an idiot, blinking in the light.

one of the most insane dreams i've ever had: i was sitting in on a press conference being given by a rebel faction in a nondescript non-american city. various members of the press corps and delegates from the national ruling party were there, as well. there had been an agreement between the two parties to have a civilized discussion about the future direction of the country, and so a town hall meeting was set up, and the press was invited. after everyone had assembled, several armed men from the rebel troops filed in, guns in hand, and locked the door behind them. revealing that the town hall had been a ploy to seize power, they opened fire on the entire congregation, killing everybody (myself included).
when i have death dreams (which are not that often and usually not political in nature) they almost always involve getting shot and usually i'm being chased somewhere first. luckily i haven't had any lately because they tend to put me in a funk for most of the morning

Also I had a VERY weird semi-waking experience, after a car wreck where I hit my head very bad. It was winter, I was driving. There was this pillar of ice someone had made in their backyard and I was yelling at it because I thought it was Jesus. Not actual Jesus but the statue they have in Temple Square in SLC, UT. It was projecting thoughts into my mind to talk and I was mad it was rejecting my car's passage into the celestial kingdom. I was v confused when I was suddenly in an ER.

i have also had dreams of all my teeth falling out and of shouting things but having no sound come out, which i think if the reincarnation theory holds true means that in a past life i was a member of the knife
― ★ White Castl★ What You Crave ★ (donna rouge), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)
all my teeth falling out
that happened to me once, only i ended up choking on them, too (not to death, this time!). it was such a singular dream for me that i actually bothered to look up the "meaning" of the dream in a bookstore, and was informed that i was stressed out about money problems, which was true, i guess.

I had a creepy serial killer dream once - I was a killer but I wasnt "me", I was in someone else's mind/body. And I was over a very large stock pot in a very dirty kitchen, rendering down chopped up human body parts. The smell, the fat, the revolting steam, it was so gross and vivid and when I woke up I thought "How the fuck did my mind even come up with something like that?"
My death dreams are all car accidents - we'll be speeding along, have a head on with a large, fast truck, but I always awaken just at the point of impact. I guess thats p common.
And once I dreamt I went mad. I had a days-long psychotic episode that I then had no memory of, but evidence was everywhere (mad writings all over paper everywhere, friends telling me I'd been nuts) and I was frightened and confused and felt very alone.

actually I used to have a lot of Sesame Street themed nightmares.
One involved Big Bird biting me on the hand. Another involved the Count biting me, which is why I was scared of him on the show for a few years.
The worst one though was Grover chasing me down a hall like a madman, trying to kill me....I was able to elude him temporarily, and I ran into my room and dove in the bed, just as he whizzed by the open doorway. Then all of a sudden he came back, standing in frnot of the doorway in the shadows, SCREAMING maniacally....

and then I dreamed I was watching Sesame Street and some announcer called my name and said I had won a shitload of prizes and that I just needed to call this number to claim the prize. I was uber excited, but then I started asking everyone "what was the number", and of course nobody knew.
then Cookie Monster was on the air telling a knock knock joke, and the punchline was "ROBERT, YOUR TIME'S UP!!!", and he started pointing and laughing at me from the television.
I got really pissed at him and I entered the television and took out one of those Ghostbuster proton packs and started electrocuting him....

most of my dreams are about playing sports, which i guess is a less lethal way of working shit out. apart from randomly punching/kicking yr bedmate, i mean
i do recall having been killed in a couple dreams -- once by machine gun. it was "painful" but maybe more wtf than actually painful in my dream.

I kneed someone in the nuts in a dream once, and my sleeping actual self did the same thing. Lucky for the guy asleep next to me he had his back to me, cos I kneed him in the back pretty hard in my sleep :|

The other night, just before bed, I read a long article, with illustrations, about post-mortem photography in the 19th century - little kids posed with their dead brother etc. I won't ever do that again.

I'm always being pursued by something in my dreams, not physically running or being attacked, but aware that something is following me. Basically survival situations in strange worlds, climbing around wreckage or ruins or mazes or something.
I would say these are general anxiety dreams but I'm not AFRAID in them, more a sense of challenge and of doing whatever is necessary. They don't affect me negatively when I wake up, as far as I can remember.
I also hardly ever remember ANY dreams, so these are just the few that persist into my waking, that I catch the tail end of.
So um...no death dreams.

all of mine follow the same sequence, more-or-less:— person pulls a gun; I run for cover (if there is any cover to run for)— the first few shots fly harmlessly wide or high over my head— I have just begun to hope that maybe someone will hear the gunshots and come to my aid; when suddenly...— ... a bullet (sometimes a miss that ricochets crazily and comes back at me) strikes me, usually in an extremity; the pain is shocking and awful but I know I may survive it— the next bullet is like a spike of ice, driven straight into my chest, or my neck; the pain is hardly bearable, and the feeling of dread as death draws near, still less so— I wake up

re: Sesame Street dreams — my earliest memory is of a dream about playing in the backyard with my parents, when suddenly a mime(!) on a bicycle(!!) rode full-speed at us and grabbed my dad, killing him instantly, because this mime I guess had the touch of death; then the mime wheeled around and came back for me but my mom managed to get between us and protect me, although she died, obviously; then he rode off and just sort of left me there to deal with being a 4-year-old orphan
oh right as for what this has to do with Sesame Street — I am pretty sure that's where I first saw a mime. I guess it must have freaked me out!
