It's definitely touching, esp. the relationship between Alex and Elaine and, well, Alex and everyone I suppose. And everyone looked after Jim.

Also, of course, the theme tune is just fantastic.

Sweetest opening theme ever.

Good night Mr. Walters! Mmmmh.

they had that hayseed character the first season who was dropped, always thought it was weird how he was never mentioned again

This is kinda cool.

seven years pass...

40 years old today. I don't know when we first saw it in the UK but it definitely influenced my future watching habits.

Kind of amazing that Judd Hirsch was not particularly annoying in it.

five years pass...

finished my first watch of the series last night

i totally understand the love for this show. what a goddamn jewel in tv history. it’s so unique the way it lets jokes breathe, never puts an unnecessary bow on an ending, and when there’s real drama it’s given room, it’s not just constantly going for laughs

truly wonderful ensemble

my favorite eps
s2e12 jim builds the castle for elaine
s5e3 alex’s gambling addiction
s5e11 zena tells louie she’s getting married

honorary mention: ep where Louie is embezzling money & rats out Jeff to save his own ass.

also every episode with Louise Lasser as Alex’s ex wife. Esp the s5 christmas episode, she’s so good <3

One of my favorites as a kid was where Louie builds a fall out shelter and fills it with cans of “legumes”

brimstead, Sunday, 14 January 2024 20:54 (two years ago)

those are really good picks vg,
i think the scene where jim builds the castle for elaine is my favorite
in the series and that might be my favorite ep. last stretch of s2 is a real high point, the one where alex becomes a daredevil is key

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 14 January 2024 20:56 (two years ago)

yeah man the castle episode just blew me away, the way it unfolded the way it did without the expected tv-show payoff

omg yes the daredevil ep is gold!

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 14 January 2024 21:02 (two years ago)

Totally otm, even though you kinda know the whole time that Jim must be the one writing the poems it takes some unexpected turns once she finds out & if that ep had ended in the more predictable way it would have ruined everything.

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 14 January 2024 21:15 (two years ago)

yeah exactly

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 14 January 2024 22:03 (two years ago)

i think their endings were the thing that consistently impresssed me. it shows a lot of confidence on behalf of the showrunners, and a lot of faith in the writers to leave something unresolved and/or let uncomfortable truths sit

like that ep where louie is embezzling, throws jeff under the bus, then comes and clean the boss won’t believe louie would do it AND WE ALL KNOW WHY. they never put a point on it … the truths of the episode and what it says about Louie, the boss, and Jeff are all right there for you to grok without ever spoonfeeding and it is so much more powerful and depressing and realistic to play out the way it does
