so i have just under 500 movies/whatevers on my netflix instant watch queue. picking one sucks, and as a lazy dude, i just scroll in from the front or back and pick something random. where is the fun in that?
so heres the deal. pick a number between 1 and uh why not just go with 450. whatever number you pick, I will watch, and post a succinct review of. NO CHEATING ie looking up my netflix streaming cue. at some point (perhaps while drunk) i was sure that i wanted to see this movie, so why not make me do it now? help me help myself.
note: i average about 1 or 2 movies a day, so this could be an efficient house cleaning. ONLY ONE NUMBER A DAY PER PERSON. if this is a glorious success i reserve the right to get to yer choice in a timely manner so dont complain. offer void between may 7-24 due to wedding.

Ok, I've hit the point where Netflix won't let me add anything more to my instant queue, so I'm game as well. A lot of the 500 slots are taken up with saved movies that have been cycling in and out of availability, so until I can get home and verify the current length, let's say 1-400?

nodded off in the middle of My Architect, but that was time and beers fault, not the fault of the movie. Finished it later. It's a pretty great and involving movie except for the fact that the director narrator is kind of the least interesting person in the whole movie, and hes there a lot more than he should be. Obviously the movie is about his attempts to come to grips with his fathers role in his life and the world and the fairly bizarre family structure he is thrust into, but given that pretty much every interview he conducts is absolutely amazing - high points being I. M. Pei sorta impugning his own purity as an artist and the emotional reaction of the guy who owns the symphonic boat - you really kinda want him to get out of the way and stop being so schlubby and mopetown. Also his voice is hard to listen to for 2 hours. Also interesting - I went from being pretty blah re: his architecture at the beginning to really appreciating it by the end thanks to some great great framed shots by the director that really illustrate the way his father used light and landscape. A- (probably lower if you don't have much interest in architecture)
― broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)
Oh man, I remember the scene with the guy who owned the big boat, he starts to weep and he's saying stuff like 'we knew about you, but we couldn't talk about it' and they embrace, really great, pity the son is so low key and dorky though. He did a good job, even down to finding the guy who found his Dad's body at Penn and getting him to come back to where it happened.
― MaresNest, Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)
yeah some of the random stuff almost seems scripted (obv its not) like the fact that that guy (dude who found his body) is so willing to suddenly overshare about his own parenting sitch. idk, im starting to think maybe the gormless vibe of the son might be the thing that brings out all of the amazing stuff in the interviews, so maybe i should quit complaining about him.

Despite having a full queue, I've only got 390 films currently available. I'll replace stuff as it gets watched.
Will also bump up by one any number that lands on a tv show, unless people really need to know that I like Kids in the Hall or The Avengers or whatever.
208 and 272 are Vincent Gallo-starring Euro-CGI-paranoia-thriller Metropia and Series 7: The Contenders respectively. I can't match jjjusten's pace, but I can definitely get through one a day.

ok so
big meat eater - i really want to love this on some level, there is a glorious mess waiting to be adored but i just cant. like meet the hollowheads, theres some sort of gooey undercurrent to the early 80s happening but maybe the years have just been unkind, or maybe quirk for quirks sake was never that good to begin with. anyway, its like a dumb cousin to john waters or shock treatment (ouch) or the subdued outtakes from the forbidden zone made into a long long 80 minute movie. that being said, i would srsly kill for the soundtrack to this. C? huh.

Ok, the cool school was a perfectly good documentary but really rarely engaging. Incredibly irritating overuse of fake speckling/scratching film effects in a good portion of the film, and some completely dense graduation photo level colorizing. Strange seeming inability to step back and see what is interesting and what is bland, and how to organize what they have. B-

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441001/
― broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)
The Devil's Miner - In other hands this could have easily been a (rightful) polemic about child labor and exploitation, but the helming here is spectacular because the director leaves the story predominately in the hands of its 14 year old protagonist and his 12 year old brother, who turn an unbelievable situation into a calm declaration of fact. As a result, you end up sort of getting lulled into a false sense of normalcy, only to get snapped out of it every time you step back and realize that you are watching children working 24 hour shits fueled by cheekfuls of coca leaves and an implacable awful belief that only the devil (which is a more complicated construct than just that but i'll leave the movie to explain) decides if you go to school the next day or die in an explosion. really powerful stuff, expertly done and subtly executed, great with no reservations. ― broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 07:55 (fourteen years ago)
Objectified was awesome! I mean probably not going to bring a lot of new content for people with a design background, but fantastic in the way that it makes you really consciously think about all this stuff that surrounds you and the fact that every last bit of it (well not like trees and stuff) was designed, which is a really down the rabbit hole thought tunnel - also warmed me to a lot of the modern design stuff i tend to be turned off by, thx to getting inside the heads of the peeps who do it and coming to a better understanding of their process. Again, im sure that to the initiated this is hardly profound, but for a dolt like me that is kinda from the knows what he likes and thats the stuff thats good ignorant side of things, it was a real eyeopener and a lot of fun. Also made me realize how much of my day job is spent judging design on both a formal and functional level, although i never really think of it that way. A. really really enjoyed this one, so thx for picking 208 WmC

Surveillance - stylish looking and pretty well acted in a chewing the scenery sorta way (including an attempted evil turn by French Stewart - yeah srsly him) which is completely undermined by one of the dumbest most worthless scripts i have endured in a long long time. now to be fair i should have gone in knowing better because this is a jennifer lynch movie and she seems to be pretty much her dad minus the visual flair and actual skill at being creepy, which mostly leaves hamfisted eXXXtreme moments and a couple decent rubber masks and a lot of angular shots, which is kinda like making the noir battlefield earth or something. Also it seems like there are supposed to be surprises but oh man if you dont see them coming i dont even know what to think of you anymore. what a stupid stupid fucking movie. oh did i mention cheri oteri is in it? yeah i dont care either.
