Except for the Lycos pop-up ads. I presume they'll be gone when the real nu-ILx comes.

wow... !

― Tracer H and, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:14 (twenty-four years ago)

this seems very cool

― ron hudson (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:29 (twenty-four years ago)

here's an idea: maybe automatically return to the thread and refresh after a new post. i don't like the "message added" etc. screens

― ron hudson (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:30 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, when we successfully post something, there should be a link back to the original thread.

― Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:32 (twenty-four years ago)

also, whats up with the name box, i was expecting it to save the 'user shortname' as the one it puts into the post answer box. is that short name just listed in the profile or something? i just got here so haven't played around too much yet. Graham, this is really cool!

― ron (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:32 (twenty-four years ago)

it does seem to take quite a while for these boxes used for adding posts to appear on the page. is that a problem with this lycos site??

― ron (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:36 (twenty-four years ago)

The short name is just used for logging in, I need to clarify this I think.

― Graham (graham), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:38 (twenty-four years ago)

All very worthy so far! Yay Graham and all other sources of goodness.

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 14:09 (twenty-four years ago)

ok here are a couple of problems i am having: right now i'm using opera, so my user profile cookie is on this browser. if i want to use IE, i can't set up the same cookie info because it says username is taken. i understand why you did this (impersonation etc?) but maybe there's a way that we can be allowed to have cookies for diff browsers. also, it appears that whatever you've got going on with hiding email addys isnt' working in netscape - i can see everybody's address in opera, but not in IE

― ron hudson (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 14:16 (twenty-four years ago)

i might suggest adding automatic paragraph tags on double returns, and maybe break tags on single returns. this feature exists on diaryland and it is handy. it seems people always have trouble with formatting on greenspun until they realize it doesnt read their returns, aargh you know what i'm saying right...

― ron hudson (ron), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 14:19 (twenty-four years ago)

Ron is spot on with that last comment. And I echo all who have said that the 'message posted' page should redirect back to the thread or whatever. :-)

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 14:25 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah the multiple browser thing is an issue: i hotdesk at work, so have all the computers in the office set to send cookies, but from every difft browser (mostly explorer), and i use netscape on os9 and opera on osX at home (sorry zzzz) (as it happens i can't configure broadband for osX yet but - ok ok zzzzz x 20)

― mark s, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 15:13 (twenty-four years ago)

― mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 15:13 (twenty-four years ago)

erm that was a mistake but it throws up another issue!! is there a "bzzzzt you already posted this dimwit!!" feature?

― mark sinker (mark s), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 15:15 (twenty-four years ago)

actually, the fact that the e-mail address doesn't show up is a great thing and i'm sure it would be a huge relief to some. If that could be kept somehow, and you could access the e-mail by clicking, I'm sure some people would feel more comfortable posting here.

― bozo regular, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 15:36 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice. looks good graham.

― Chris V., Tuesday, 23 July 2002 15:48 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll do something about the message added/login pages, they're very unfinished right now.

Automatic line breaks are definitely doable.

I don't get the problem with cookies, you should be able to login (and save cookies) on as many computers and browsers as you like. Maybe you're using the Register link again instead of the Login link?

Email addresses are shown if you're logged in.

― Graham (graham), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 17:32 (twenty-four years ago)

Graham, well done! I love that we can login, now....perhaps our madness will become a bit less visible to the outside world;>

― Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 19:49 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah

― Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 22:35 (twenty-four years ago)

can we set cookies on here?

― di, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:18 (twenty-four years ago)

yep. it seems we can. okay. yay!

― di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:20 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, graham you are right about the cookie situation. i was hitting register instead of login. my cookie info is fine in both browsers now.

― ron (ron), Wednesday, 24 July 2002 01:12 (twenty-four years ago)

something very odd is happening in at least the last two posts. as i switch between being logged on and off, some text is appearing in my last post which i did not write: "and then they lez up" or something. another time it said: "wanker" (!!!) haha. once the "and then they lez up" was in di's post right above mine. the problem seems to be when logged in? displaying fine when logged out? actually there may be no rhyme or reason to it, i'm getting confused :-(

― ron (ron), Wednesday, 24 July 2002 01:20 (twenty-four years ago)

another funky thing that just happened is i was unable to log out for a bit in opera. every time i went back to the page and refreshed after logging out, it logged my in auto. after closing and restarting the browser, it worked again. sorry for barrage of posts, this is exciting!! :-)

― ron (ron), Wednesday, 24 July 2002 01:31 (twenty-four years ago)

can i post with my name when logged out?? i'm also testing whether i can log out after making this post. after my last one, i again lost the ability to log out. so maybe making a post changes something - i could log out until after i did it. testing testing 1 2 3 is this thing on?

― ron, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 01:35 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, indeed i can't log out anymore. that "and then they lez up" phrase is popping itself into random posts all over this page: mark s' and mike and tracer's up top. that's enough playing for now. thanks again graham for your hard work

― ron (ron), Wednesday, 24 July 2002 01:40 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess what's happening is your browser caching the logout page, ie it displays the page without being resent the new (blank) cookies. (I've got to look up the tags for preventing the browser cacheing pages)

― Graham, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 02:19 (twenty-four years ago)

(sorry)

― Graham, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 02:20 (twenty-four years ago)

― A, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 02:30 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, now i feel silly, that explains it. oh no, wait, YOU GUYS ARE SILLY :-)

― ron, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 14:09 (twenty-four years ago)

Cool idea on the login, Graham. Kinda creepy how it looks like ILM only with slight differences, but it's the good kind of creepy!

― Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 29 July 2002 04:39 (twenty-four years ago)

I still like it!

― alext (alext), Monday, 29 July 2002 11:07 (twenty-four years ago)

I still like it!

And the duplicate message thing works too!!!

― alext (alext), Monday, 29 July 2002 11:08 (twenty-four years ago)

I love it by the way. It's like loving what an old friend has done with their hair.

― N., Wednesday, 7 August 2002 09:07 (twenty-four years ago)

That's your answer to everything.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 10:13 (twenty-four years ago)

This is all v. impressive, Graham.

― Andrew L, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 10:40 (twenty-four years ago)

okay, now I am confused. I thoughout I had registered on day one, but the system doesn't recognise my login name. It won't let me re-register today either. (Also, what exactly is the diff between posting logged in or not?)

― Jeff W, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:17 (twenty-four years ago)

eh? should I be logged in somewhere? I'm not yet can still post???

― chris, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:27 (twenty-four years ago)

You can post without being logged in (and I think it's vital that you can), though if you are logged in, it automatically puts your name and email address in forms, you get custom options for what pages look like, you get to see everyone's email addresses, and no one else can use your name/email address. The links are at the bottom of most pages.

Jeff: You don't appear to be in the users database (But I think I remember seeing you there, and I don't think you could have been deleted). Try registering again.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:38 (twenty-four years ago)

It won't let me log in :o(

― chris, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:40 (twenty-four years ago)

Why not? (have you registered first?)

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:47 (twenty-four years ago)

that's what I was trying to do, came up with a database error

I'll try again

― chris, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:49 (twenty-four years ago)

Problem adding user:
Database Insert Failed!

― chris, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s - I've made you an administrator on ILE and ILM. Go to the admin page (which is linked at the top of the new questions page), and play around - the only thing that doesn\'t work yet is saving edited messages.

If anyone else wants to try this out, ask.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-four years ago)

It won't let me register either. Or start threads. But I can post obviously.

― Ronan, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:51 (twenty-four years ago)

Registration problems are a fuck up on my part - I've fixed it now.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:54 (twenty-four years ago)

wicked stuff

― chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:56 (twenty-four years ago)

And the thread thing too.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yay silverback alpha males r00l d00d!! ~~and then they bez up~~

― mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:05 (twenty-four years ago)

'Slovely Graham; thank you.

― Ellie, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:08 (twenty-four years ago)

ah it works. sweet.

― Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:19 (twenty-four years ago)

If I've logged in as Tim, which I have, can other people post as Tim, but with a different e-mail address? Or am I then the only Tim permissable?

― Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:15 (twenty-four years ago)

Basically you have to be logged in as you to post as either Tim or with your email address. If another Tim comes along they have to add an initial or whatever, even if they used a different email address - erm... yeah, this could be a problem.

― Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:18 (twenty-four years ago)

hey it says on the admin page that if i change my name it will change my abilities!! yippee!! SIZE... of a HEMULEN!!

― mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:28 (twenty-four years ago)

Hahahaha! Hooray! I shall be King of All The Tims! Oh hold on we've established that all the Tims are k-rub. Except for Finney obv. I hope he won't be upset.

― Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:36 (twenty-four years ago)

“And then, as they watched him, what did he do but call out in a squeaky voice: “If Tim Toldrum is dead, then I'm the King of the Cats!’ And with that, up the chimney he sprang and they never saw him again.” (Story peculiar to Britain, collecteed Lancashire and elsewhere...)

― mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:40 (twenty-four years ago)

er, ulp.

― Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:45 (twenty-four years ago)

graham when you demonstrate nu-ilx to the panel of examiners in order to get yr doctorate in total computer brilliance, we hereby guarantee not to revive the "most unacceptable thing out yr ass" thread

(OR DO WE?)

― mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:48 (twenty-four years ago)

Whee! Thanks Graham, I exist again!

― Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 14:14 (twenty-four years ago)

is it because i asked about ian van dahl?

― gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 14:43 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, cool, wow, it does work, i'm logged in this time and everything. strange, the day ilx goes down, my own site decides to go down as well, hope its not terminal...

― gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 14:45 (twenty-four years ago)

(just testing)

― jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 16:06 (twenty-four years ago)
