tbh I didn't know a bit about the Green Lantern character besides what he looked like until I saw this long-form trailer. Is it pretty much otm?
Anyway, this looks much better than I was expecting (and better than Thor ffs and maybe even Captain America).
― Uteruses Before Duderuses (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link
It might end up another entry in the long history of thrilling trailer = turgid film, but that fills me with genuine excitement. It looks like Reynolds's casting is spot on, the transition from wiseass to gravitas when he speaks the oath was splendidly done.
― Bill A, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link
whoa
okay that looks cooler than any trailer I've seen so far. I didn't realize they were going so far into the origin stuff. And Bill otm, the lantern oath was well played.
I may have to get excited for this. Goddammit, that was SO not my plan.

Yeah, like I said, I have zero history with Green Lantern, but this looks phenomenal.
― Uteruses Before Duderuses (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link
Green Lantern is my favorite of all the superheroes...I read some of the comics as a kid, and loved tv cartoon, it would mean a lot to me if they could pull this off. I don't know what it is, he always seemed more likeable than Superman, and I always thought his powers were way cooler. Plus he was GREEN.
― VegemiteGrrl, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link
Just hoping this is made more in the mold of the Batman films by Nolan or the X-Men films, which seem to put a lot of actual effort into the storytelling, and not like Iron Man which, admittedly, is great fun to watch while it's happening, but seems totally hollow after it's over (and I get the feeling that's what Thor and Captain America will be like as well).
― Uteruses Before Duderuses (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link
I'd honestly be happy with either Iron Man or Dark Knight treatment over X-Men treatment which by now just feels like it's bordering on abuse. Like, I'm even still sort of half interested in the new X-Men but now it's like "Okay I'll see it but I'm NOT fucking paying $$ for it this time"
― VegemiteGrrl, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link
I agree, but I think they're kind of roped into having a tone in the Thor and Cap movies consistent with the Iron Man movies, since all the characters are going to be brought together for the Avengers picture.xp

re: X-Men films. I remember seeing the first two in the theater, but I think I saw the third one on dvd late at night and don't remember much about it (and I didn't see Wolverine and probably won't see the next Wolverine film). My X-Men opinion is really based on the first two.

yeah Thor looks like balls. CapAm looks alright. X-Men First Class is kinda intriguing, and i think GL is gonna be dope. i love the abundance of huge fuckin noggins in green lantern - sinestro, hector hammond, ryan reynolds. i hope its real ~cosmic~

Don't be dissin' The Mighty Thor! He is an awesome character in the right hands - Kirby/Lee Thor is Thor as groovy space god layin' the smack down and in Walt Simonson's hands we got more space god (and alien Thor in Beta Ray Bill), the Frog of Thunder, AND storming hell with machine guns and more. Some of the best comics ever.
Movie looks like pants, though.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link
The Superman movies were really good about handwaving away the entire galactic community of aliens thing, but if the movie devotes as much time to it as the trailer hints, that's a tactical mistake. There's just way too many whoppers for a general audience to swallow. You could probably separate the nerds from the normals in the audience based on if they cheer or eyeroll when the Green Lantern that's an intelligent planet or that Green Lantern that's an intelligent musical note appears.

I'm curious enough about the new X-Men to check it out, I'm afraid though that the origin-story and olden-timeyness quality of it will lure me in and they'll be all 'HA! GOTCHA' and it will be balls.
― VegemiteGrrl, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link
If you want to get into Thor, this is a great time to do it. The Walt Simonson stories are being collected in a honking omnibus at the end of the month - almost 1200 pages of awesome.
But back on topic, I really do hope there is a G'nort cameo in GL. Justice League Antarctica was amazing.

can't we just talk about what we'd like to see from a Green Lantern movie that's good, than worrying about what everyone else in the world would rather see?
I don't mean to sound snotty, but yes I understand what a 'successful, marketable' movie is now and I know how utterly depressing the end result can be when it's superhero related
do we have to go there right now? While we're kind of excited?

I go back with Ryan Reynolds all the way to Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, but I guess some people go back even earlier when he was on Fifteen(?). Anyway, I never expected him to move into movies, much less have a franchise built around him, but he seems to have handled the responsibility fairly well so far. I think he's really engaging when he wants to be, and a loveable smartass the rest of the time. Good casting here, imo.

he definitely exudes doucheyness, not just in looks but also in demeanor, but he made it work for him as deadpool in that wolverine movie.maybe the doucheyness of popular heroes have been raised so much now that reynolds seems baseline normal by comparison. jeremy piven seems to have had a similar trajectory.

A good principle (see SPIDER-MAN 3), but isn't sci-fi slithery nuttiness implicit in the GL franchise? How is there a clash? You can't just tease Abin Sur (I think that's his name) making that dude from Definitely Maybe a space cop and then dying and then no more aliens.

3,600 sectors, each with a green lantern... not a single one of which you will care about during the course of the movie
also its really comical how hollywood just grafts the monomyth onto everything now regardless of whether or not it makes sense for the story, so even a character defined by his fearlessness gets a shitty, cynical 'hero refusing the call' scene

This was pretty good, as far as super-hero movies go. My kid bashfully asked me to go even after I heavily criticized the trailer (which we saw before Thor, which is one of the worst super-hero movies I've seen but I pretended to like). I don't know anything about the Green Lantern comic books, but the scenes on their home-base planet were dope, as was the weird, churning, smokey, skull-demon bad guy. The female lead was ultra ws. Green Lantern had a sweet apartment - I liked that he had high ceilings and enough wall space to hang his bikes up there. The dogfight stuff with the drones was cool. I love the military-industrial complex as far as it is portrayed in cinema, you know? The final battle scene with the sun was cool.
I don't know. The only thing I didn't like was his mask. Oh, and the guy who did the voice-overs at the beginning and end was in like, Pirates of the Caribbean or Thor or something else that I've recently watched recently and it was very, very jarring. Like, "Hey! You're an actor!"
