and the incredible hulk is her fugitive dadand the sun never shines except in the frozen northteenage fem-bourne? this movie is possibly tailor-made for me

directed by the guy who directed atonement though, which i liked really, but makes me concerned that this will drag a bit more than the trailers let on. hm...

I've been tracking this movie for a couple of months. Do u think the director reads our posts on ILX?!??
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)
Because I mean, Sucker Punch can bite me when this comes out a month later.
I'm actually wondering how they're going to cover all this ground and resolve anything in the time allotted! There's her training w Eric Bana, then them being discovered, her being shipped off to Cate Blanchett-land, breaking out, making her way in the real world with some itinerant people in a trailer, being hunted/discovered/betrayed, and the whole mystery of her parentage and possible genetic manipulation. That's like TWO movies.
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)
At least!
i know right! i trust the magical magic of the movies to do right by us
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:47 (fourteen years ago)
director also directed the k knightley pride & prejudice, which covers a lot of story and time too, as does atonement. i haven't seen the soloist bc someone said it was super heavy and i wasn't in that mood and then i forgot about it. i like sense of heavy subjects though. i mean, i think even his p&p def zoned in on the heavy stuff while still letting the story flow along.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)
Saw it this morning. Leans waaay too heavily on the fairy-tale imagery IMO, but there's a few interesting wrinkles in terms of style and sexual politics. (Hard to get into it without spoilers.) Also, I don't think I've ever liked Blanchett less - she seems to be doing a 3rd-rate Swinton impression.

Chem. Bros. score helps, a lot.
― Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 02:21 (fourteen years ago)
ooh yes electro-action score!
fairy-tale imagery sounds like a plus to me tbh!

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)
but I appreciated the voice of dissent. I just love the creepy side of fairytales.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
I thought it was a novel idea, but it really does it to death. "Teenage fem-Bourne" is an apt capsule description.
Saiorse Ronan is good and all but I was more impressed w/ her in Lovely Bones for having to act through P. Jackson's green-screen maze of bullshit and still coming out with dignity intact. By comparison, convincing badassery is kids' stuff.
― Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)
I really want to see this one. I'm kind of hoping from the director's track record that he gets how to write/direct women better than some of the other recent female action characters. ugh.
― sarcasdick (mh), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)
that's one of the reasons why I'm excited abt this film too. He seems to direct actors playing "outsider" women well.

does it come out this weekend?? maybe!!
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 20:47 (fourteen years ago)
after sucker punch, discovering this existed and was coming out immediately felt like hollywood was pulling some avuncular prank where they act like your present's going to be awesome and then it's socks or something, or a notebook, or a movie with no sense of humor, and then they're like WAIT NO JUST KIDDING it's a teenage fem-Bourne.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)
Oh I can't go this weekend, I can't spend any money until the 15th. Nev mind, I'll see it when I can.

this looks like it could be dope, and ive heard good things about it - havent seen anything by Wright aside from the Soloist (sucks) but he seems like a smart enough guy:

Liked. Looked good, zipped along, didn't arse around over-explaining stuff, pleasing structure, liked almost all the cast (Ronan, obvs, but also Hollander doing wetwork in 80s tennis/yachting casual). Was down with all the scruffy wet mitteleuropa stuff - enjoyable texture in a thriller.
― portrait of velleity (woof), Sunday, 8 May 2011 13:03 (fourteen years ago)
i finally saw this and it was everything i'd hoped it to beand more: the score was noticeably weird and totally great! (as i think was said ages ago on this thread but let me reiterate)and beautifully shot, plus such amazing locations and art directionit's just really fucking good (and i'm going to try not to be pissed that it got like no media attention, because that is a waste of my energy when i'd rather be learning how to speak russian while knife fighting)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 July 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)
I bought the score on my phone in the parking lot as I walked out of the theater.

― Gukbe, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 03:34 (thirteen years ago)
enjoyed this film a lot, fairytale stuff not overdone at all cuz fairytale x action film is such a novel blend in the first place. actress who played hanna was incredible. would've quite liked to know what happened to the hippie family? i hate loose ends.
the ending seemed to be the one it had been building up to all along but i've just been told that it was a last-minute change of ending due to budget constraints - original ending would've played on the genetic stuff more (adding sci-fi to fairytales and action?!) which makes sense cuz come to think of it that thread seemed way underdeveloped and the whole internet café revelation both underwhelming and implausible (the girl is freaked out by kettles but can work out a computer and the internet just like that?)
eric bana is WELL fit in this, the scene where he comes out of the sea, my god
― lex pretend, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:15 (thirteen years ago)
the sequel, about all her cloned female siblings, should be interesting
― the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 14 October 2011 06:01 (thirteen years ago)
this was fun. very pretty, sort of music video-ish but lots of entertaining choices re: shots and sound design.
also nice to see some actual fight choreography done in single takes, instead of blurry close-up quick cuts.

I love the ambiguity of where they've taken her at the beginning. American-sounding people, underground facility, desert, English-speaking accented tourist child. Puzzle out whether it's Africa, the American southwest, or something else entirely.
― mh, Monday, 7 November 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)
just seen this... really enjoyed it. that scene were bana takes caree of four dudes in the subway was very impressive. also, quite nice to see an action movie where the action scenes aren't all done in bourne quick cut style (which i do like but it's been (badly) done to death these past few years)
― Jibe, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

― Quand le déshonneur est public, il faut que la vengeance soit (Michael White), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)
Just watched this last night. Liked it a lot, couldn't get over how gorgeously designed and shot the whole thing was. Bits and pieces reminded me of Lynch and Todd Haynes, but the reference point I kept coming back tonwas Seijun Suzuki. It was like Bourne remade as Tokyo Drifter. Way more inventive (and funny!) than I expected.
