Did your parents ever swear around you when you were young? If so how? Under what circumstances? If not did they start doing it eventually, when you were older? What about you swearing in front of them? Discuss etc.

We're New Yorkers for fuck's sake. Of course my parents swore around me. My dad practically has Tourette's Syndrome. I have only recently started swearing regularly in their presence though; I figure I'm 21 and they do it around me all the time, so I see nothing wrong with it.

I never heard my parents swear. Never.

To answer my own question: I don't recall ever hearing my dad swear. My mom swore only occasionally, like when she was pissed off in the heat of the moment. Preferred 'shit' to other words I think. I am 23 now but they haven't started swearing so I ain't holding my breath. Sometime in the past year I accidentally said 'fuck' on the phone with my mom. And then 'oops' - I think she chuckled. My dad reads my webpage, where I swear, uh, as I see fit.

My Dad always used to say, "Blast and damnation!", which was as foul- mouthed as he ever got. For some reason my Mum used to say, " ...and that's swearing" after any swear word she came out with (usually bugger or bloody hell).

I'd never dream of swearing in front of my Dad - no problems in front of my Mum.

I never heard my parents swear for most of the time I was growing up. My dad swears more these days, but my mum never does. I try not to swear in front of them, well not the f word or the c word (which I can't type, as it would break my f and c word duck on the Internet. Recently, I was in a car with a friend and his dad, and every other word his dad said was the c-word, it was pretty funny!

I guess I get the impression that swearing is not the done thing, not that my parents are particularly conservative, I think it's just me.

My dad works himself up into a potty-mouthed frenzy on a regular basis, so I've been fluent in swearing for most of my life.

My father refuses to say "fuck", but he says all the other ones. My mom used to swear a blue streak, even using words like "cocksucking". Well, she only used that one with regard to the vacuum cleaner : "goddamn this cocksucking piece of shit!" Also "motherfucking". Not often, mind you. Then she decided it was a sin and stopped. She still says "shit" and "bitch", though. But they never censored themselves for our sake.

I first said "fuck" when I was four. I was so consumed with guilt that I finally approached my mom with tears in my eyes..."Mom, I did something really bad....I called Kimmy a 'darn fuck'." I thought she would wash my mouth out with soap, but she just laughed hysterically.

My father swears when he gets mad or confused, which is quite often. My mother usually substitutes "feck" or "sugar" instead of "fuck" or "shit". Something really awful would have to happen to catch her off-guard. They don't have any problem with me swearing unless it was like a load of swear words stuffed into one sentence.

In Minnesota, when you die you go to Heck, so it used to be the biggest no-no in our house. I actually got my mouth washed out with the proverbial soap for saying 'ass' at 13 but once I went to university my mum opened her own personal swearing floodgates and it was suddenly acceptable to say every word going. She likes 'dickhead', 'fuckwit', and 'asswipe' in particular. My younger sister, who is a profanity generator, lives and works with her and was the first person I ever heard say 'beatch'. My grandfather is no longer alive to say 'now what kind of talk is that?'

My dad limits himself to 'bastard', 'bitch' and 'shit'. And never pronounces the 'g' in fucking.

My mum lets not a foul word sully her lips. My dad on the other hand is quite fond of swearing especially: when working on the car, when mending something, when driving and parking, when carving the roast dinner and on most other occasions. What I think is grate is when old (ish) men apologise for swearing in front of me i.e. 'ooh sorry love, forgot there was a lady present' (happens a lot when barmaiding), the cue for me to start looking round going 'a lady? Where?'

My dad used to swear all the time. Particularly while throwing things. My mother can swear up a blue streak, but mostly uses it casually. I swear all the time in front of her. "It's so fucking hot in here!"

I don't remember hearing ANY swearing when I was young. Now, it's still uncommon- swear words are only unearthed in times of frustration ( a bit of verbal road-rage from my dad, say ) or, very occasionally, to highlight a (sometimes comedic) moment. The f-word is never used in the latter case.

I don't think my parents ever cussed while I was growing up, and as a result, I rarely cussed either. After my first year of college, I started cussing a lot more, but when I came home for the summer, I tried my best not to cuss. So I nearly did a double take when I heard my dad say "shit". Since then he's said it with some regularity, which makes me think he's always said it, but never let me hear him. My mom has cussed on very rare occasions.
