Are you Swedish?
― did you notice "you spin me round" was playing in the background? (snoball), Friday, 8 April 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)
No, that is not my last name.
No, I am not Swedish. I am, as Whiney noted, "Brit-centric".

ya, oppet is from manchester (iirc)
― The Geirogeirgegege (nakhchivan), Friday, 8 April 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
So, oppet, (btw, enjoy tea) as "brit-centric", what's more exciting, the Royal wedding on April 29th or Arsenal vs Man U on May 1st?

― popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Friday, 8 April 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
Ok, I feel like I have to go through with this. Please bear in mind that I didn't join ILX because I thought I had any funny, interesting, or otherwise valuable contributions to make. Right now I feel like when it's a tennis match and one of the players hilariously gets a ballboy to take their place for a moment, except instead of it being a joke they start shouting "WHY ARE YOU SO SHIT AT TENNIS".
― oppet, Friday, 8 April 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)
lolllll You get points just for that analogy.
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 8 April 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)
Well the wedding has the inherent excitement which accompanies all national ceremonies and I think it will be great for bringing the country together and allowing us to forget all our troubles. Arsenal vs Utd will be dull as fuck but I will wait to see who the referee is before passing final judgement on this matter. The most exciting event of the weekend has fallen into the cracks between those happenings i.e. Brentford will beat Southampton and go level on points for 6th place in league one with just the final match remaining. That's living.
― oppet, Friday, 8 April 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

BBC chief football seer Phil McNulty (only on a big match day obv). Does his brain go into my body at the same time, cos that might change things.

do you like football oppet? who should I put as my fantasy football team captain for this weekend? your choices are: gomes, hangeland, baines, huth, ivanovic, bardsley, parker, gamst pedersen, malouda, etherington, adam, bent, berbatov, odemwingie

My fantasy football this year has been a total disaster. Really shameful. I've gone for Malouda as my captain this week. You should prob go for Berba BUT I'd be tempted by Gamst Perdersen, for reals.

ps. c, dunno about wandering the streets (well, a few of my mates have enjoyed mooching about that disused train station bit over the road from piccadilly stn) but if you want to sit in nice bars/cafes surrounded by nice people and served by nice staff then i can recommend a few

Hello everyone. This thread is so very...something. I'm just enjoying getting this far and looking forward to playing with a smile on my face, it's my cup final, etc.
Disused station = excellent idea. My standard 'couple of hours to kill' tour is along the lines of: get onto canal from oxford rd, head out past deansgate locks and castlefield, marvel at ersatz roman ruins, walk through THE HORROR of spinningfields and wail at the misery of it all, maybe head up to cathedral gardens to watch the teen emo hordes. This might not be the most convenient plan for you tho. There are many nice cafes and bars to hang around in. There's a nice korean restaurant.

― nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
Manchester City Art Gallery is pretty nifty if you like Victorian art, and the City Museum down at the university has a nice little ancient Egyptian collection. My favourite cafes (Love, Cafe Pop, the grotty little place in the Corn Exchange) are long gone, never to be equalled.
viz. the HSBC building, you'd like to think it would be listed and protected, but Manchester City Council are uncultured heritage-blasting fuckwads.
― Confused Turtle (Zora), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)
there's a kapoor exhibition at the city art gallery at the moment, plus a mary kelly one at the whitworth. both good.
― nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
yes. the displacement of the cornerhouse is so ridiculous it's untrue.
The council's approach to regeneration is tragic. Anything non-madchester/factory rcds related is deemed irrelevant to the city's 'great cultural history' afaict. They're so desperate for investment now that anything will go.
Manchester gallery is great, even tho I hate all the pre-raphaelite stuff. Haven't been to the Kapoor exhibition yet.
― oppet, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
e.g. Jeremy Deller's procession was p amazing and an interesting interpretation of 'Manchester' but the council decided it wasn't pro-Manc enough to decided they had to fund a shit sequel which was correctly on message and fucking boring.
― oppet, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:29 (fourteen years ago)
thanks! that sounds pretty good - i like canals, buildings, the emo hordes, etc, and i think i'll be heading from the Whitworth, so it's all very convenient. i have 0 clue what Spinningfields is but google has just informed me it is on Hardman Boulevard and surely nothing can top that.
quite excited about this now!
― górecki's zygotic mynci (c sharp major), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)
my free time's mostly going to be outside gallery hours my momz has insisted i go to the mary kelly in my afternoon off (and then gone 'oh let me look at the map for a second' and kept it, so now i have to get a new map. :/ but maybe that will encourage me to explore more!)
― górecki's zygotic mynci (c sharp major), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)
If you like hanging out with filthy crusties, it looks like the OKasional cafe has just popped up in castlefield. No doubt they will all be asleep if you go in the daytime. Tomorrow evening: "Manchester Against Militarism present an open meeting exploring how Britain is always at war, why oppose the military intervention in Libya, and what we can do to challenge the military industrial complex in Manchester".
'God help us if there's a war', innit.

Anyway I don't know what you should ask me but as ever I am happy to answer anything in a truthful and strangely emotionless manner.
I wonder if c sharp major enjoyed their visit to Manchester.

oppet, what (if anything) to you have to say about carlos tevez' appraisal of your city?
"There's nothing to do in Manchester," Tevez said. "There's two restaurants and everything's small. It rains all the time, you can't go anywhere. There comes a moment where you say 'where am I going to go with my family?' and you begin to feel bad.
― nakhchivan, Monday, 1 August 2011 11:59 (fourteen years ago)
quo vadimus indeed carlitos
― CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 (darraghmac), Monday, 1 August 2011 12:41 (fourteen years ago)
Well you know, he is correct on some points. There isn't very much to do in Manchester if you want your cultural enrichment to be handed to you on a fucking plate because you're an ingrate who is unable to find their own enjoyments.
There are definitely more than two restaurants. I have counted. Maybe he thinks there are only two Argentine restaurants. Well he's wrong on that too: there are two Brazilian restaurants. Maybe he can't tell the fucking difference. There is a Gaucho Grill which is probably full of Argie beef if he wants that. There are a lot of mediocre and expensive restaurants in Manchester so he does have a point but I don't think that's the point he was making really. And if you do go to footballers' favourite San Carlo at least you get to see Ballotelli taking the piss out of Rooney escorts.
"It rains all the time" Well that isn't true either. It doesn't rain enough for my tastes.
As for family trips. Well, I don't have a family but if I did I would take them on a trip round a museum or maybe on a train ride to the peak district. Morecambe is within striking distance if you want the seaside.
Men like Carlos and Mario do not enjoy Manchester. Manchester is for your Garys, your Phils, your Scholesies, your Waynes. Get Joey Barton here. He'd love it.
Nakh, has a talented international footballer ever insulted your hometown, and if so what did you think?
― oppet, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:10 (fourteen years ago)
<3
― nakhchivan, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)
i can't think of any similarly despondent moaning from london based foreign football players, partly cuz they seem to have bought fewer similar ingrates
arshavin and veron (after he was the victim of armed robbers) come to mind
i think it's cuz there are always a few other wealthy expats from wherever to keep them company
― nakhchivan, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah I mean I am not from the Morrissey school of Manc drizzle-worshipping miserablism, I just prefer rain as an experience.
I think Manchester will appeal to the footballer who wants to have a large number of easily found crap nitespots where he will be the most famous, richest man in the room and the women will be easily impressed and there is little chance of accidentally ending up somewhere which doesn't have that peculiar level of sordid glamour-non-glamour. I mean, you kinda have to search for those places in London ime, but in Manchester it is the dominant form of night out.
