The Greenspun Boards

I was just wondering...once we move to the new server, are we going to keep the old boards alive? Will people volunteer to keep new answering a "we have moved" message? Or do we leave it as a Mary Celeste style ghost board floating on the sea of greenspun til the inevitable server death? Do you think new people will come along and think "what happened here, where did they all go?"

haha jel did you ever wander through the dead streets and squares of the deserted city of y2k?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 8 August 2002 12:42 (twenty-two years ago) link

maybe someone can set up an afghanistan news type bot (i\'m assuming that\'s not a person) to automatically post \"we\'re moving\" messages all over the place or at least on a regular basis. maybe it could be arranged with greenspun to redirect until the G server goes down forever. has it been settled whether we will be able to add to the old imported threads or not??

ron (ron), Thursday, 8 August 2002 13:33 (twenty-two years ago) link

What I\'m going to do is

- post a big \'we\'re moving\' thread.
- kill the \'ask new question\' function to prevent new threads existing.
- check every week or so and post a standard \'we\'ve moved\' message on any thread that\'s come back to life (and close that thread down at the same time)

uh oh, looks like more quotes problems, graham

ron (ron), Thursday, 8 August 2002 13:39 (twenty-two years ago) link

WHEN? when will we move? tell me! tell me now!

(I am moving house! We are letting the lease expire and are moving out in October. Much as I like Kew/Chiswick, I miss being near the centre.)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 8 August 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

As I mentioned on 12ft lizards, I want to preserve the Greenspun message codes (they'll be converted to numbers), so that you can change:
http://www.ilxor.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=009LBm
to:
http://www.ilxor.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=009LBm
and it'll redirect you to the appropriate thread on nuilx.

(this is why the message numbers here start at 3 million - greenspun has reached around 2.2 millio, or the base 62 equivalent thereof).

We haven't heard from Andrew all week, and him doing the planned upgrade to the server is the big thing holding us back now. Also the archive have to be downloaded and uploaded again on broadband, which I don't have, which means either waiting until I'm back at university, or me swapping CDRs with someone (and email the final week's message or whatever), or me going round one of your houses, or someone else could do this bit I suppose.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tom, I've made you an admin too, the admin page link will appear on the New Questions page. You can't save edited messages, but everything else works.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 14:26 (twenty-two years ago) link

Incidentally, are the old ILX threads going to be archived anywhere? Or are they going to be dragged over to the new boards to Stalinistically pretend the move never happened?

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 August 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

Another small suggestion to add to the enormous "features to add" list. Next to the search and stats links, a "FAQ" link. this would be to a static page maintained by admins -- though obv a collaborative thing with contributions from everyone. or would a FAQ ruin the mystique of ILE?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 8 August 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

"What I'm going to do is
"
Nooooooooooo - don't tell em! I was looking forward to the "where'd everybody go?" posts ;-)

zebedee, Thursday, 8 August 2002 15:14 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ha! More likely it'll be "thank god all those irritating gits have gone. I can enjoy this board at last"

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 8 August 2002 15:18 (twenty-two years ago) link

The only way an ILE FAQ would work is if Hanle y posed the questions and Sinka answered them. Otherwise, it'd just be pheff and blah.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 August 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm thinking, when we move over I will start a new "Identity Theft" board (or maybe Duane should do this!). I do kinda like the idea of going back to ILX(greenspun) and finding it populated by loads of new people with their own memes and stuff.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 8 August 2002 15:48 (twenty-two years ago) link

dude if you cancel all the old threads then "meet me in the desert" a.k.a mitchblog a.k.a my beloved brainchild will be lost FOREVER! if you can live with yourself after that, ewing, then i dunno..

mitch lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 8 August 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago) link

but think about it mitch, you could have your very own board! The mitch blog board! think big!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 8 August 2002 18:47 (twenty-two years ago) link

What kind of stuff do you want to eb in the FAQ, Alang?

The move should be seemless, old threads will be added to the new database and all the new features will work on them (search, permalinks ect)

Stalin (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago) link

FAQ definitely needs to answer the 'how do i post a picture?' question, and possibly the line spacing one (or are you converting new line characters into <BR>s, Graham?)

There is something oddly exciting about this New ILX business - a scared new world.

the pinefox, Friday, 9 August 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wasn't thinking of specific things (though some HTML skillZoR would be helpful) but things do recurr. it would be a good place for "what the hell is this bitch?" and "who are you fuXoRs?" and "what's with the XoR crap?" things. It's just something the admins could play with whenever they feel like it i guess.

With all the cleverness you've added graham, how about a shorthand for posting images? :-)

something like <"blahblah"> where if blahblah ends in .jpg, .gif or .png, then it automagically translates it.

Sorry that's a duff idea, i realise. (I was thinking about those automagic smileys on other boards where :-p etc is converted to a mini gif of the right-side up face -- which actually I hate, ugh)

"What does '!=' mean?" = U+K for FAQ

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 9 August 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago) link

while we're at it: what does N.B. mean, this might not even be an ILx-ism

ron (ron), Friday, 9 August 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago) link

nota bene / note well / that much easier to type than "oh oh and by the way here's this thing"

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 9 August 2002 19:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

thanks n. next: please explain 'innit' - i thought it was sort for "isn't it" but now i'm thinking not. best to just ask you guys

ron (ron), Friday, 9 August 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

no, that's right. it's London/Essex slang, innit!

michael (michael), Saturday, 10 August 2002 09:38 (twenty-two years ago) link

ok, then i guess my confusion stems from people using "isn't it/ innit" in places where i wouldn't expect it. interesting.

ron (ron), Saturday, 10 August 2002 15:17 (twenty-two years ago) link

innit geezer!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 10 August 2002 15:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah, i don't get geezer either. sounds like i need to go to london and take it all in for a while 'til it sorts itself out.

ron (ron), Saturday, 10 August 2002 16:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

it means "isn't it" but it gets used in places you wouldn't use "isn't it", innit

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 10 August 2002 16:56 (twenty-two years ago) link

I sort've got into the habit of using "innit geezer" as an excalmation for use when agreeing with friends. It's lost the question mark. And, no it's not an affectation, I can't control my innits.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 10 August 2002 17:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's also taken over "doesn't it" and "eh".. nice and all-purpose

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 12 August 2002 00:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

I will be writing the non-technical bits of the FAQ today.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 August 2002 10:28 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tom, can you post therm using the forms on the Admin page? If you do that they only end up being visible in one of the two boards, but I'll change the database entries to make them site-wide FAQs.

(I haven't setup a site wide admin page for doing site wide FAQs yet)

Graham (graham), Monday, 12 August 2002 11:06 (twenty-two years ago) link

There is something oddly exciting about this New ILX business - a scared new world.

A similar emotion to seeing a whole expanse of clean, fresh snow with no footprints on it.

Anna, Monday, 12 August 2002 12:14 (twenty-two years ago) link
