I know Martin owns everyone on this, but how have people been doing at this addictive little game?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 August 2002 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

New "I just got 77,690" answers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 August 2002 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It does take too long to go through all of the different games in the free version. And I swear i'm not playing at work! Ever!!

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 8 August 2002 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been able to get around 60k. i haven't played for at least a week and i'm very glad of this, cuz my brain is almost back to normal

ron (ron), Friday, 9 August 2002 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Around 64k is my record, but I haven't played it too much in the past week. I'll beat Martin sooner or later, oh yes...

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 9 August 2002 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

around about 2 million.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 9 August 2002 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

which version are ppl playing

i downloaded some version from shockwave.com and got 170,000

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 13 August 2002 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been playing the web version at http://games.yahoo.com/texttwist.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 August 2002 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That link won't work for me :-(

DG (D_To_The_G), Thursday, 15 August 2002 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because I messed it up. It should be http://games.yahoo.com/games/texttwist.html.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 August 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I just improved my record - 224,530. I am playing the version on that link too - the downloadable Super TextTwist appears to be different.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 August 2002 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope no one minds my using this as a place to record my high scores, since it doesn't remember them in any way. (Obviously this is showing off too, I freely admit.) I just scored 276,890.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 August 2002 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

OUT OUT DAMN CYBORG.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 24 August 2002 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Couple of my students have been addicted to this -- then again, it's been pretty boring at work. How the heck has everyone playing this been finding the time to post to ILX regularly as well? You astound me. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 August 2002 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Revive because I've just played this for the first time since back when this thread happened, and put my score up to over 300k, and still going - but I want to go to bed. Proof: http://img220.exs.cx/img220/4356/texttwist9lc.png

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 March 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

219,730 today - that's without a loss again. Once more, bedtime stops me. I'm still finding it a challenge, and it will beat me sometime.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

ERMINE? I would've never got that.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me neither. Holy mangofuck. o.O

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

It took me a while, which is why I didn't complete that round.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Not available for Macs :(

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Sure it is! You have to play it online, but you can play it.
http://games.yahoo.com/games/downloads/tx.html

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

What's this then?

"Note: Text Twist is not compatible with Unix or Macintosh computers."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

jaymc's right. You can't play it online on a Mac.

There is a program you can download that will give you ten games as a demo, but I just play it here at work.

Also online, you can't keep track of your high score on Mozilla.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I would have gotten ERMINE bout would have missed EMIR.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

But I just played it to make sure, and I've never touched a Windows machine!

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

119,360 tonight, still without a loss.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Have you guys played Word Mojo?

http://games.yahoo.com/games/downloads/wm.html

I used to be addicted, but I just played 20 minutes of Text Twist and I think that's a much harder game.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

TextTwist works fine running OS X and Safari

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to go home tonight and hopefully be proven wrong by milo and rock. It just seems like it didn't work on my home's mac before.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

oh, nevermind. the java version works but I can't download it.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

It also works with OS X and Firefox.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's just not downloadable on Macs.

I generally give up on the game before I lose.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

Although I just gave it a try, and "VIRAGO" got me early on.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

OK, now I'm at 154,630 and I'm starting to get bored.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm at 311,320. I guess I'll come back to this later this evening, maybe, unless my computer crashes while I'm gone.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I clearly have a very serious rival here!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

300,000+!!!!

the best i've done is like 21,000. :(

btw, im on a mac, and i can play it online just fine w/ firefox

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Tonight, 127,080 - I haven't lost in this run at all, so that's about 773k as a running total!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean "lost". i thought if you dont get the 6-letter word then you lose and it starts over?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

The battle is ON!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

(I got 80k but then tried 'ICEPAC' and 'CAPICE' and 'PACICE' but somehow failed to also try 'ICECAP')

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

i thought if you dont get the 6-letter word then you lose and it starts over?

That's what blows my mind about the scores these guys are racking up. Lordy.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

(Have you noticed what order the smaller answers are in?)

I'm still playing the same round. I'm up to 524,930. I'm not sure I'm having fun but now I want to see 1,000,000.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

http://www.theminorthirds.com/ilx/texttwist.gif

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm at 659,810 and calling it a night. Tomorrow, barring any snafus, to continue.

Also, Gravel, I got IPECAC immediately on that one and didn't get ICECAP at all. But I watch a lot of MST3K, so...

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

of course you got "ass"

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

That's what I mean, Phil: I haven't lost. I'm damned if I'm leaving my computer on and logged in all week to keep one game going, and since there is no increase in difficulty I don't figure I'm cheating by restarting. You'll note the image I put up with my score that day included the six-letter word.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

GET ONE LIFE!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

wow, chris.

i find that i get the six letter words (well, most of them) fairly readily, but i barely ever get all of the words, i'm just too slow. my scores aren't all that great.

there are some scrabble words that it doesn't take, and others that scrabble wouldn't accept that this game does, and so it goes with word games, i suppose. it's a problem i have anytime i find a new addictive word game.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there are a bunch of words that I get frustrated that it doesn't accept. It knew SARI but not DOSA. If I remember correctly it knows ALE but not ALES. There are a few more words that I keep typing in which it doesn't know.

Martin, my computer is on all the time anyways, so it's not a problem. I'm not actually serious about a cockfight here, I was just curious as to whether it would ever defeat me. It's come close! TIPTOP and RHINOS both had me panicking recently. But I do want to see what 1,000,000 looks like. And I'm nearly at 800,000 now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Ever closer.

http://www.theminorthirds.com/ilx/texttwist2.gif

I know, I'm the only one who cares, it's fine.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

jesus christ

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Full-worders are gorgeous to see! I have been one off getting one once, but that's it. Plausibly I should play this more, or get a degree instead.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

And after this, it has become academic:

http://www.theminorthirds.com/ilx/texttwist3.gif

(I apologize for not ending with one where I got all the words.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 March 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

There was one right near the end (~980,000) that nearly got me: EASING. I perhaps hyperventalited a bit while trying to figure that one out.

I realize this ability of mine does not make me a sex god. At least I am as good as Martin at something.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 March 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I will probably now feel obliged to spend my weekend trying to top that!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Double damn, I've been playing a bit this evening, while conducting a couple of AIM chats as well, and it's dying on me - it's taking easily ten seconds to react to any click at all, which makes it really hard. I'm still going, but getting low scores each round. Has anyone else experienced this? I was intending to keep one game going all weekend, see if I could get a score like Chris's, but I may have to abandon this one, see if reloading helps. Only 49,900 on the board anyway, so no huge loss.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

go martin! you can do it!

ad here i was feeling supremely pleased with myself for getting 30,000

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

I am too competitive:
http://img67.exs.cx/img67/655/texttwist23jq.png
I haven't lost all week, so my running total is over 1.8 million. I'm tempted to see how long I can keep this one game going, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Let's see what 10,000,000 looks like!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 13 March 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Let's not. When I went to bed last night my brain wouldn't stop playing anagrams through my head, so I stop here:
http://img167.exs.cx/img167/7475/texttwist31mx.png

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 March 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I love this thread.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I just tried Bookworm instead, and once I learned the rules, it got too easy - 600,000 and nowhere near any risk of losing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

does anyone score in the tenthousands? :-)

i love playing it. no problem on a mac, i use it on safari.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

of course english is my 6731th language. ;-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Nathalie, I think this thread has just attracted the people who are best at it to boast. There was some talk about TextTwist on a previous thread (that's why Dan comments at the beginning about my scoring), but I don't remember what that was called. There were quite a few scores covering a five-figure range there. (Also - and I can't say this without sounding arrogant - don't compare yourself to me, as I am freakishly good at games.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)
