so yesterday we had this pep-talk meeting at work all about Embracing Change and got given a copy of this dreadful-looking motivational book called "who moved my cheese?" it looks like patronising simplistic crap to me, and i ph34r reading it... so are there ANY good self-help books or are they, as i suspect, ALL RUBBISH?

katie (katie), Friday, 9 August 2002 09:46 (twenty-two years ago) link

i'd be a lot less reluctant to read it if it was called "dude, where's my pie?" for example!

katie (katie), Friday, 9 August 2002 09:46 (twenty-two years ago) link

(and not that i NEED any mofo self help books anyway you understand)

katie (katie), Friday, 9 August 2002 09:47 (twenty-two years ago) link

They are all rubbish, obv. (I am just blithley stating this of course; I haven't actually read any of them properly)(though perhaps I need to read one to cure me of my negativity, man)

Well, I'm not sure if a booklet will make people feel empowered about the process of organisational change. It's better to involve people in the making of the cheese, than just giving them the cheese and telling them to eat it. It strikes me as a fob-off, "well we gave them that funny (ahem) book about change, so now they should all feel happy about what WE are going to do, otherwise they can just lump it"

Close your eyes and think of Momus.

I don't mind embracing change but I'd much rather embrace banknotes.

Actually if anyone wants any hints on embracing change I'm the man to talk to. After all as a matter of course I get three new bosses every year, not to mention a complete change in the ethos and direction of my organisation. Its one of the things I love about me job. As long as they don't touch my cheese.

A lot of the population of Edinburgh's New Town, especially the student population, should be forced to read 'Self-Hindrance' books instead.
It would be so perfectly horrid for them.

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 9 August 2002 10:22 (twenty-two years ago) link

Having read some reviews of this it looks like the biggest pile of crap ever written and being given it by yr boss means yr cheese is soon to be elsewhere.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 9 August 2002 10:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

I haven't even seen this book let alone read it but was on a course on Monday with a guy (seemed likeable & intelligent enough) who reckoned it had changed his life & who swapped a lot of cheese references with the course tutor through the morning.

I read all those One Minute Manager books but haven't ever been able to put the life-changing, stress-eliminating stuff into practice at work. Is that my failure or that of the books, I wonder?

Motivational books = a sign of Satan. If you can be motivated enough to actually read the damn book, do you need the book?

"Who Moved My Cheese" is an evil, evil fucking book. When given this book, quit immediately. Issuance of this book generally means that some folks are getting fired.

cripes! colin you have voiced my inner ph34rs! (well, suspicions more than ph34rs, but you know...)

Colin is totally fucking OTM. I know from personal experience (from watching about 40% of the people in my building get laid off last year).

Has anyone ever had the mini "Transactional Analysis" stuff they often give you in service jobs. This involves stories about "cold pricklies" and "warm fuzzies". hee heeeeeeeee.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 9 August 2002 12:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jeez Louise, Nicole and Colin's stories scare me. That's bureaucratic/HR evil in a nutshell.

'Who moved my cheese?' is one of only five books that my flatmate/live-in landwoman has on her shelf. Should I be worried about redundancy?

Having just googled this (b/c I thought u were making phun of thee gullible for a while there) it is clear to me that sniff, scurry, hem & haw are engaged in thee worship ov graven images (az r3pr3z3nt3d by thee big pile ov cheese) and that this book is actively encouraging pagan idolatry in thee modern workplace. That or it's just more shitty pop-psych for middle management. WATCH YOUR ASS if someone you work for hands you this book, I think.

A) Yes, this book is completely the work of Satan. Get out now! The phone call is from _inside the building_! (easier said from the comfort of a nice job, I know).

B) Counteract with:
I moved your cheese.

One of my workmates was getting all excited about this book the other day. I shan't get him all worried by sending him a link to this thread. Oh damn, I already did.

I am buying 1000 copies of this wonderful book to distribute to readers of the old boards who may now be scared of 'managing the change' to ilxor.com.

NB I noticed that many of the fuckers buying this on Amazon had also bought "Fish!". Why do none of the dumbing-down doomsayers focus on 'management culture' eh?

I was thinking about this over the weekend, and wondering: what kind of music would the admirers of this book be likely to own?
Lots of 'Now That's What I Call Commercially Successful' type compilations, I reckon, plus U2, Dire Straits.....and ABBA hahahahahahaaaaaa!!.....*runs away*

Ray M (rdmanston), Monday, 12 August 2002 15:20 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually they're likely to own Moby's Play and the Sven-Goran Eriksson Classical Collection (or US equiv.) U2 & Dire Straits are on the money, ABBA possibly but not NOW compilations, too 'juvenile'.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 August 2002 15:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lots of Billy Joel. And possibly Dave Matthews Band (in an attempt to get hip).

EEK IT'S PATRICK BATEMAN.

Even he would realize the futility of these books -- ergo, it is the character Michael J. Fox plays in The Secret of My Success.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 August 2002 20:27 (twenty-two years ago) link

As usual, the greater subtlety of you seasoned ILx posters puts me to shame.....

How about these for likely suspects: M People....The Lighthouse Family....that 'Morcheeba' bunch....

Tom - gawd, I'd hoped that Sven compilation was just a joke when I'd read it somewhere, but the thing actually exists doesn't it?
I must remember to spend even more time back on planet Ignoramus.

I confess that I have found a self-help book useful - Allen Carr's "The Easy Way To Quit Smoking" helped my sister, my best-friend, and his father (who smoked for 30 years, got cancer, tried to quit with the patch and failed) to quit cold turkey. It almost worked for me, but the day I was reading it I found out my grandmother had a heart attack and I had to fly back to Newfoundland to see her, so needless to say I cracked under the strain. Still, I'm giving it another shot this weekend, embarassing as it may be that I need to brainwash myself to give up cigarettes.

Terrible book, but wish he'd fleshed out Sniff and Scurry. Missed opportunity.
