It's called CARSON, and I just impulsively spent $40 on a 6-issue subscription (which is a way huge amt of money for me to impulsively spend) and I am v excited about it.
You can read about it at http://carsonmag.net
Is anyone else whoa excited abt this like I am? Like seriously, I almost pissed myself when I found 3 early issues of Ray Gun for $5 at a local used book store.

i liked his work in the past. not sure what he can bring to the table in 2011 tho.
i would have been equally as excited about finding the Ray Guns tho!

It was at a point where I'd spent tons of time reading about him/the magazine but had never actually gotten to see any of his stuff, and they were buried under this huge stack of shitty magazines and I totally freaked once when I found them and once again when the lady at the counter shrugged and told me I could have all 3 for $5
― ToeJam & Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)
Hahah he named it after himself? Dear lord.
Still have an issue of Ray Gun around, the one with Swervedriver on the cover. The big rival was Vaughn Oliver's Huh, I believe.

Ned, that's one of the three I got!

We are practically brothers.

And drone and design shall bind us.

Some shitstorm on Twitter btwn @carsonmag and @DavidLCarson where Carson the person is claiming to have nothing to do with Carson the magazine
― brie on crüt (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 24 June 2011 23:45 (thirteen years ago)
wtf. that's really weird. They actually posted a pdf of the contract with supposedly his signature on it.
Bikini was a pretty cool little magazine too. I kind of liked the little square format better than Raygun.

i still have a couple of beat-up ray guns, one w/ mudhoney and roky erikson
― peace frogbs (am0n), Saturday, 25 June 2011 04:49 (thirteen years ago)
Ray Gun looked really awesome, but was often hard to read.
― buffandmaxsgaydad (Pillbox), Saturday, 25 June 2011 05:04 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, reading the articles was kind of beside the point
― Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 25 June 2011 17:09 (thirteen years ago)
wasn't one set in zapf dingbats?
i only read ray gun for the nude centerfold personally
― am0n, Saturday, 25 June 2011 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
everyone I knew in high school who read ray gun became a graphic designer (no vu joke)
― Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 25 June 2011 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
a guy I used to work with who went to calarts claimed that carson ripped off his whole schtick from a certain calarts professor, but I can't remember the name
― Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 25 June 2011 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
heh my dad is a graphic designer we had 1m of raygun and its ilk lying around the house when i was growing up, consequently i hate it

i am so ambivalent about carson, like i totally love him theoretically and he has great ideas but so much of it is such an eyesore that i can only really appreciate now through "the 90's" as a retro-irony lens.
― plax (ico), Saturday, 25 June 2011 20:24 (thirteen years ago)
yeah the design is total garbage, "edgy" 90s design redeemed only by some decent interviews
― am0n, Saturday, 25 June 2011 22:58 (thirteen years ago)
i get flyers for d'n'bass nights that look like david carson
― plax (ico), Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:34 (thirteen years ago)
but then i'm like, to what extent does good desing rely on its current fashionability and like to what extent does that mean that it can be "appreciated" at all given the shifting sand that sort of project is built on.
― plax (ico), Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:36 (thirteen years ago)
I'm sort of a form-follows-function purist, I guess, & I have to admit that, while I often admired the show of typography, I found the enterprise as a whole to be sorta ostentatious.
― buffandmaxsgaydad (Pillbox), Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:45 (thirteen years ago)
a few great things came out of it - e.g. the credits to seven, i mean se7en, which are the best thing carson didn't design.
― jed_, Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:50 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, the credits to se7en are legendary in the design world. I'd say that that is def the high-water-mark of hyper-stylized mid-90s type design.

lol do you live in 1997?
― buffandmaxsgaydad (Pillbox), Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:57 (thirteen years ago)
while, on the whole, i like things to be as simple as possible graphically, i know that i'm tied to a kind of fashionable trend within that. for example BUTT then> Fantastic Man/the gentlewoman is a particular kind of simplicity that has appealed for the last few years.
although on the whole i don't care about graphic design as long as it's reasonably transparent. i know what i like and i know what's annoying and most graphics are neither.
