There are some specific threads here and there but no general overall thread, so.

Prompted by the news that 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' will soon be no more.

I just posted this scene on my Twitter page:

Wow, first I'd heard of the cancellation! I watched a lot of AMC and OLTL in my early 20s, due to working mostly nights, so I was watching the day Judith Light gave her alltime best scenery-chewing performance (as Karen Wolek admitting to being a prostitute on the witness stand:)

I would like to point out that Days of Our Lives was the original Lost:

I remember being fascinated as a kid by some out-there summer storyline about a lost/hidden city, but I don't remember what soap it was. Nice alternative to Donahue and the Partridge Family, though. I remember thinking it was pretty awesome/unfair that if you didn't have to go to school you could watch TV shows that had a new episode every day.

I lost my virginity during One Life to Live, so RIP to that one.

Was that the lost jewels of Rosario thing on Sunset Beach, the king of all American daytime soaps (by default, since it's the only one I ever watched)? I am slightly shamed that I even remember the name of the lost village. But not that shamed.

Hm, I'm looking it up - oh, no, that's too recent. This would've been the mid-80s sometime.

Oh, and a soap opera thread has to mention Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, though it's probably got its own thread. Not much is available on DVD, unfortunately. I keep hoping to see it added to Hulu or Netflix streaming or something.

my little brother was obsessed with Bo on Y&R when he was 3 or so...every day when we got home from school he would regale us with the adventures of the magical "Bo"

Me, I was a Patch fan. Also Victor Kiriakis

I would have been around nine years old when Sunset Beach was broadcast. Me and my little cousin used to watch the omnibus every Saturday afternoon, it lasted about six hours and nothing ever seemed to happen in it yet it was brilliant. Cursed jewels, evil twins, secret FBI agents, tsunamis, sexual deviant priests, turkey baster impregnation - the show really opened up my eyes as a young boy. This clip is from my favourite storyline, possibly in anything ever, just because of its sheer ridiculousness.

(Backstory: Annie, the foxy redhead, is trying to steal a baby from the whining, breathless Olivia, so Olivia's husband Gregory will leave her and marry Annie. Annie plans to give said baby to Caitlin, who is Gregory and Olivia's daughter and is married to Cole, who shagged Olivia and may be the father of the baby. Cole thinks Caitlin is pregnant but she is merely wearing a pillowcase.)

Actual dialogue includes: "you really expect me to play midwife to my worst enemy?" and "it wasn't my idea to drug Mrs Richards, steal her baby and tell her it died." The recommended viewing links to a follow-up clip in which Annie breaks Olivia's waters by poking her with a stick.

Was addicted to Bold and the Beautiful in college: that storyline where Taylor gets kidnapped by the prince...the whole Ridge/Brooke/Taylor stuff was pretty awesome lunchtime tv. Our dorm room common room was always packed for "Bold"

I do remember with a certain fondness watching The Bold & The Beautiful during the summer holidays - it didn't get an omnibus - and seeing Usher make an appearance as "Raymond" who had a one night stand with one of the regulars.

Probably the high point of his career too. I'm pretty sure the girl he had the affair with was also in a Wyclef Jean video.

Down in the comments:

I have been watching ABC soaps since I was 15 and am outraged you would even entertain ending these shows!!!! Did you take a poll to see how you will do with this idea ratings wise?? I for one will not watch another informative, authentic show, fun? in whose eyes? There are so many if these shows on TV now you are doing nothing benificial. well I will just have to change the network that I will watch, This is a HUGE HUGE HUGE mistake on your part!!!!!

Yes! When Annie starts turning up in fake talk shows to show her mental turmoil at the wrongness of her actions, etc, I was applauding the telly on a daily basis.

Other notable storyline around the same time featured Randy Spelling rapping. I hope to God that's not on YouTube or I might die laughing.

As long as it isn't General Hospital, I've been hooked on that stupid show since the bus crash arc in December.

The idea of a soap deciding to skip a year is insane. I imagine the first episode after it will look like when Mr Burns catches the Loch Ness monster

Trying to get into The Young and the Restless. The principal matriarch as it were is drunk on vodka 24/7, leaving room for massive amounts of “acting.” Another one of the main characters has multiple personality disorder and speaks in a phony and irritating Southern accent half the time. They shouldn’t be called soaps anymore, they should be called prescription medication operas, because that’s what all the commercials are for.

Due to the lack of actual American daytime soaps, Neighbours (from Australia) has recently earned its first Daytime Emmys nominations.
