Nicholas, It Was Really Nothing

Nick Barmby: Tottenham (OK - maybe even his best period) --> Middlesbrough (big-money signing) --> Everton (not great?) --> Liverpool. All that cash paid, all the angst of crossing Stanley Park - and within a year or two, he's off again, to Leeds.

I suppose my question is: why, for goodness' sake, did Liverpool sign him in the first place, if they were going to offload him like this?

And is there sth about him which means he's only any good for a few months, then loses it?

i don't know! i wonder what the leeds fans will think once terrys old boys start arriving en masse. keane for anderton??? WHAT THE FUCK? hahahahah! cloud. cuckoo. land. thats insane. and both managers seemed to prefer anderton.

as for barmbys value, well, tel reckoned they wouldn't have got him for that even 6 months ago. has the bottom dropped out to such an extent that it would have been good business at greater money 6 months ago but not now? talk about built on sand!

the value of players seems to have become completely arbitrary.

and jeffers looks a massive white elephant now doesn't he?

Liverpool signed him so he could score against us on his Red derby debut. They're mean like that.

He played his best stuff for EFC towards the end - instrumental in our relatively good and goal-filled start to 99-00. It was as an Everton player that he re-emerged as an international. And then he buggered off.

With those ears - Indian or African?

He shoulda just stayed at Spurs. Never leave the Spurs, you'll only want to come back or not be very good (this opinion is not based on science!)

why aren't you a brentford fan jel?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 9 August 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jel - On one side, Klinsmann, Sheringham, Barmby, Dumitrescu, Walker, Cambell. On the other, Darren Anderton and Gary Arsing Mabbutt.

Yep, theory PROVEN BY SCIENCE as far as I'm concerned.

"Never leave the Spurs, you'll only want to come back or not be very good"

Although some would say the two are intrinsically linked...

Gareth, I dunno I should be or a QPR supporter, but when you are a kid, you just sorta choose teams, and you don't realise the whole localness of it all. That's what it was like at my school. Unless of course your dad or mum or family take you to football from an early age.

I see Tel has just signed another of his old mates, Paul Okon from Boro, a man so mediocre he couldn't get a regular game for the smog-monsters. The man is a menace when it comes to transfer deals.

After watching Spurs-Celtic the other day and seeing Gary Doherty come on as striker when Rebrov is on the bench I know that Hoddle os somewhat unhinged.

As a wise old man sat next to me said, "if Hoddle had signed Rebrov he'd play every minute of every game"

as for Barmby at the Reds, he never really turned it on did he? he did havce an injury for a while but then when Gerard started using Riise and Carragher out wide and stayed with them (rightly so) Barmby's days at Anfield were numbered. I'm surprisedhe didn't move last season truth be told.

I find this thread disappointing.

eight months pass...
It's bizarre that it's in the ILX POSTERS category.

Having forgotten about this, and seeing it once more, I presumed this was going to be about N. and "Billy Liar Syndrome".

Well, indeed: and perhaps that would have been more interesting than what it was actually about.

What can we find to say about N. and Billy Liar Syndrome?

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

N.'s problem is that he can't count to five.

does anybody remember Nicholas Barmby, Footballer?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yes - for whom now does he - play?

the cupfox, Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

Barmby played well for Liverpool in his first season! Check the stats folks, I'm willing to bet he scored a fair few goals.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

He's been on loan at Nottingham Forest for the last few weeks. He can't play for Leeds, because he's near the number of appearances where Leeds have to give Liverpool an extra payment.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago) link

What about "the rumours", what were those about?
