What's the deal with incompetent mosquitos?

I've noticed that some mosquitos seem to get to business, focusing on my veins (which are actually pretty prominent in my hands and feet). Others appear to repeatedly bite the wrong spots where they get hardly any blood at all.

Some mosquitos seem to just bite once and go away. I imagine them as gentlemen mosquitos. "I will only bite once, whether or not I am able to draw out any blood."

I think the more urgent and key question here is -- you just sit around and watch mosquitoes bite you and fail? I thought my library job was boring!

Maybe they're a recon squad on your body.

Citronella. You all need citronella. Keeps the mozzies away.

Mosquitoes aren't as bad as midges

But what do midges live on when they can't get hobbit? Do midges compete with Sarah and Katie for hobbit consumption?

In Italy they're having big problems with (Le) Tigre Mosquitos. I'm not quite sure what's so bad about them, other than that they bite in the day and the puncture swells up to twice the size of normal mozzies. They're certainly good at what they do, though. I visited my granmother for an hour, and found seven spreading bites on my legs and arms. Ick.

Apparently global warming will bring malaria to Britain! Whoot!

Oh, and can someone explain to me how it's not possible for HIV and similar to be transmitted by mozzie bite?
