As Duane has noticed, you can ask questions again now.

All of the threads we copied from Greenspun.com will be available as soon as all of this week's messages have been added to them, which will some point on Saturday afternoon. You'll be able to post to them, and use permalinks etc.

Also do look at the FAQ.

Report errors, suggestions, problems etc. on this thread. We now have complete control of every detail of the site and can change it on a whim, so do ask.

Hooray!...but there is a Pproblem, something about an unclosed HTML tag!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 17 August 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

let me try again...

"Problem inserting message:
Unclosed HTML Tag
let me try again...
This tag did not have a n > to end it."

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 17 August 2002 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Problem inserting message:
Misplaced HTML Quote Mark
it's saturda
A tag name cannot contain a quote mark.

WHAT'S THAT ABOUT? it wasn't a "tag line" whatever that is, it was my post.

duane, Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i was having trouble posting out of opera, i couldn't see anything below this input field, including no 'submit' button.

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

restarting the browser has cured that, sorry! i vote for _ilx0r_ with a zero

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

out of opera, i posted with italics tags to get around the HTML filter error. i had no such problem in IE

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, now it's doing it in IE too, sorry. it seems like often i say something on here about what problems i'm having and it turns out to not be true. sorry graham.

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems that you can post successfully once to a thread, then after that you get the html filter error thingy.

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:42 (twenty-three years ago)

no, that is not it - fuck, i should learn my lesson and just shut the hell up!!>

ron (ron), Saturday, 17 August 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor fuck up with the HTML Syntax checker there.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

God bless ilXor.com and all who sail in her.

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 August 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, is anyone else having problems registering, by the way?

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 August 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

yes but you don't even need to right?

doo\rag, Saturday, 17 August 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've fixed the registration problem.

You only need to register if you want it to remember your name and email, and if you want to have your own settings.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham what is the: Webmail link? feature in the settings please.

Regarding the time setting, what should it be for Brits? 0? what about BST compared to GMT?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 17 August 2002 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ah I see what the webmail feature is now, a neat idea !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 17 August 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

BST=1
Europe=2
EDT=-4
PDT=-7
New Zealand=10

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

New Zealand=12 I mean.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham a suggestion, I know people want a minimalist user interface, but is there any chance of a convenient Google link in the far bottom right [for the benefit of those that use a computer that doesn't have a google toolbar installed, e.g at work or cybercafe]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 17 August 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is it the 18th already?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 17 August 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

HTML syntax checker = Nick will be so less funny now.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 17 August 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

As will Dang Perry.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 17 August 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 17 August 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 17 August 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't quite get the thing about the old Greenspun threads. Will all the old urls be inaccessible now? Or will they be redirected to ilxor? When I go to the old Greenspun url of ILM I am asked for a password. Which password? There seems to be no user name going with it. I tried the new ilxor password but it doesn't work. Can you enlighten me, Graham?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 17 August 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex,

Graham & Mark - are downloading and integrating the old threads this weekend - this is taking slightly longer than expected - due to slowness of the internet today.

The password on Greenspun is there for ILX admin holders only.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 17 August 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

We locked it because we didn't want people accidentally posting there after we'd begun the download, and we're going to open it again once the threads from there are available here, which was meant to take only a few hours, but the greenspun database download system is being very very tempremental. Mark S and I have spent 5 hours each attempting to download it, only to have it fail each time. It has worked previously.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a little bit of luck downloading part of the ILE archive, and now every thread from the last few days is here and unlocked. Post at will.

Replies in the since Monday to threads started before 27th July are still missing. I'll get the archive complete as soon as possible.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

grrr ilm just failed to connect again twice

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 17 August 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, I think you can stop trying. Sorry to waste your day. If I can get the first chunk of ILM like I did ILE, I will have 99% of the messages, and then all that leaves is less than 100 threads per board that are possibly incomplete (ie on the old-ILx new answers page, but not in the chunk I downloaded), and I can check those manually and insert the messages if necessary (most won't be).

I tried out that filter thing again myself. It works fine on very small chunks (ie in theory), but the time taken appears to increase exponentially on anything of any size. So even if you did complete the download you'd either have to comb through manually for new messages, or send me another CD.

I wish I'd thought about this all earlier.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 17 August 2002 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

oh ok!! it's all right, i spent the time filing my emails and labelling my videos - i just discovered i videoed crooklyn twice

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 17 August 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i found "the britney spears story"!!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 18 August 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Well then that's something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 August 2002 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't like this place at first, but now all the old threads are here i love it even better than greenspun. fanksh grrraham.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 18 August 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened to the e-mail notification feature of the new answers when you have started a thread? I couldn't find it in my settings. Actually I'd like to have the option to subscribe to certain threads not necessarily started by myself. Just to know if there are new answers posted on subjects I am interested in. It's so easy to miss them out with all these zillion threads.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 18 August 2002 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

graham is there any way to change yr USER NAME once it has been established?

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 18 August 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for pointing out the error jel, I shouldn't change things without testing them, no matter how ickle.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 18 August 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

DOES ANYBODY IN HERE LIKE THIS ICKLE?

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 18 August 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

MANY CHEERZ0R to GRAHAM!! This is really something. To think it, and DO it!!

now one little question: i haven't been paying attention so closely, but all the "blue writing" that linked to other threads went to greenspun.com addresses - is there a way to search/replace in the db and make these links work for the new domain/dbscheme?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 18 August 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

DJM re: Google: On my to do list.
Alex re: Emails: I'll think about it.
Mark P: No, though I could do a full database replace if you were desperate.
Tracer: Already did it (mostly).

Graham (graham), Sunday, 18 August 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Umm, I keep getting the following email, although I have only been posting on the new site. No big deal, but it might be bothersome to some people:

I'm automatically posting we've moved messgaes to every thread on Greenspun, so anyone who signed up for notifications with their questions will get replies. Sorry.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, okay: no problem.

As a longterm project (i.e. you don't have to programme it by tomorrow, Graham), do we want an ILX chatroom? Or even ILE/ILM chatrooms? Or would that be offensively dominated by trolls? How about one for well-established posters only (based on time or number of posts or something)? As long as we don't set the number so high that only Ned can get at it, of course. And on that subject, I had time before the Users option was withdrawn for upgrading to note that I am now in 4 figures for my posts, and into the top 50 - number 46 with a bullet, I think it was. Hooray!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham my hat, had I one, would be off. This was the last little thing niggling at my mind.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Graham I have another idea to help slow computer people. As well as the 'new messages' thing maybe there should be a no. indicating total messages in the field, so new people don't spent aeons loading one of the really long-running threads? (what are you reading/wearing etc.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 August 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Done, though I think the Setting for limiting messages is much more effective for slow users, so it hides it if you switch that on.

I've had an existential crisis about how to punctuate it. Taking sides:

?????

Graham (graham), Monday, 26 August 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks (also this version is much better for sad ILX stats freaks like me)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 August 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

oldie but goodie (mark s), Monday, 26 August 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry about the recent ~10 minute outages. Basically what happens is the database gets overloaded somehow and clogged up with requests, and then people keep retrying and the queue for database access gets longer, so the only thing to do is for me to suspend the boards temporarily while the database works through its queue of requests. I've started logging requests after the second one today and after the third one just now I think I figured out what was causing it and I've tried something to sort it out, but I don't know if it is the problem.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I GIVE UP

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

GRR GRR GRR etcetera.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe Andrew would have some insight?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you need to add throttling code so that when the queue to connect to the db gets too big, the next requests are bounced to a "sorry, try again" page instead of queueing them up, as well? Or is there already throttling & it's just not working correctly? It can be nasty stuff to implement. :(

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I tried one way of checking, but that introduced a noticeable pause while it checked, and also I'm worried about inadvertently closing it when the site is still totally usuable, just because some arbitary limit has been reached. Really the best thing to do is to find out what was blocking up the server in the first place (I've suspended Search, and Tom's message total things too). I'll see what else can be done. One possibility is the other services/sites we share the server with, but I haven't investigated what there is.

The thing is, the server can easily cope with peak demand. I've never seen the load averages reach above 2%, but when the clogging occurs they jump to 20-30% in about 10 minutes.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 29 August 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, I couldn't get into ILX from about 8:30 - 11pm last night! :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

greenspun lusenet doesn't appear to be working right now

Alan (Alan), Friday, 30 August 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
If you see the "Method not implemented" message when you post, it's because the ilxor.com domain name hasn't settled down yet and it occasionally still gets redirected to ilx.wh3rd.net. The best bet to get rid of is to point bookmarks at ilx.wh3rd.net, and I'm hoping the domain name will work properly one day soon.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

LOG OUT if you're trying to post anonymously, your username gets stamped on things otherwise.

(The problem mentioned in the last message isn't one anymore)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Graham, how difficult would it be to add the option to see a list of people online right now?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oi - leave my lurking privacy rights alone.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Easy. Not happening. Even I can't find out and hope you trust me when I say I can't and wouldn't. There are indirect records in the database that I can figure out vaguely when people have been online, but nothing you don't already know is being stored.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Ha Graham's Sep 15 post is a bit sad now.

Is it just me, or is ilxor/p3r/wh3rd - whatever - down more than greenspun once was?

I love all the new features, though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 April 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ilxor/p3w/n3d.net

Frogm@n Henry, Saturday, 30 April 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

not as much tracer - remember that greenspun would go out for days and days at a time (part of me thinks this maybe had a positive effect - there's a touch of cabin fever to this place somehow at times), this has happened a couple of times with ilxor.com but no where near as much as with greenspun, there it was a regular occurrence. i'd try/bookmark p3r.net, it seems alot more reliable though maybe i'm fooling myself there.

ahhhhhh it's back. anybody else feel totally out of whack due to ILX being down?

Mark Clemente, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

I guess so. It didn't even register with me that it was back. Just clicked out of habit, "hmm, Ilx. . .Oh, Ilx!"

Misery, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

i managed to keep my composure during those dark hours

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

i guess it's just been a particularly slow day at work.... making it a little frustrating that Ilx wasn't there to help me through it.

Mark Clemente, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

it won't die :(

Oh shit, I still have to finish an essay tonight... Couldn't it have stayed down until tomorrow morning?

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Just walk away from the baby, the urge will pass.

nabisco, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it's kinda hard since I have to write the essay on the same computer. Experience has proved that ILX is the most alluring distraction from school work.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

The baby is IN THE COMPUTER???

nabisco, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

ILX baby.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

ILX, baby!

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I read a bunch of really interesting stuff, got more done at work than I have for weeks, began writing a thoughtful blog entry comparing some current video games to the new wave of cinema, and am still having a very rewarding conversation with a new friend. And now ILX is back. Damnit!

Will M., Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

The point I was trying to make is: I didn't realize how much ILX killed my productivity.

Will M., Thursday, 11 October 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

You never notice the distractions of life until they're gone.
