Your favorite year of the 00s

Your favorite personally, as in the one you look back on most fondly.

4 other people and I were having this discussion and we all chose the same year. And none of us knew each other in the year in question. Maybe this is an unrecognized global phenomenon!? I will not lead you by disclosing which year we chose.

Brief explanations encouraged.

gonna go with either '04 (the year I got married) or '07 (the year my daughter was born) but man on a macro scale this decade fucking sucked.

I'd rank my favorite years:

2002
2001
2003
2008
2007
2005

The rest sucked, especially 2009.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that decade sucked. 2001, 2002 especially

2006 was good. i did some fun traveling and some other fun stuff that i won't go into here

2009 was good. many fun times with friends. though some stuff was a little too much.

don't remember anything particularly noteworthy in my life about 2004. and 2007 kinda sucked

2005 was ok, too. yeahhh
eh i'll go with 2006!

2008 included: no medical crises or deaths in my family; the rerelease of the deluxe Freaks & Geeks set; the early/fun months of dating, without the later months of tapering off; inconveniently timed jury duty that only lasted a few days because the case was thrown out; ghostwriting a book; all the benefits, debt-paying, new-stuff-buying of new income; the premiere of Breaking Bad, and that period when you could introduce people to Mad Men and watch them get really into it, before everyone already knew about it; the last time I took an actual out-of-town vacation, which mostly consisted of listening to Pacific Ocean Blue and eating pizza by the lake.

08 > 02 > 09 > 01 > 07 > 00 > 04 > 05 > 03 > 06

might be totally pulling that order out of my ass more based on good memories vs. lack of any particular memorable experiences, other than the bottom year i don't think i was substantially happier in any given year over another

2007, mainly because of one particular standout week: the best party I've ever been to and my first ever academic conference (and about 10 hours between them).

2004 was the year I said FUCK IT and dropped out of the degree I was hating and spent the first half of the year becoming the man I am today by investigating music wildly, and spending money on going to concerts and other cool shit, and then in the second half of that year I moved city and started fun easy new degree and was with my girlfriend v close to literally 24/7 and it was all awesome and shit. So then

2008 contained my most treasured creative work of the decade, my best academic work of the decade, my hottest one-night hookup of the decade, my most successful relationship of the decade, my coolest holidays of the decade, and my most you'll-thank-me-later job loss of the decade.

2003. I had no future, no ambition, no resources, no romance, but also no heartache and lots of booze and prowling around late into the night. Those may be entirely personal reasons, but I kinda liked the spirit of the times too:hipsters in tight pants, people still all upset about the wars, "In Da Club" coming out of every hole.

The year I was youngest in, of course

(which only started sucking when the Supremes elected Bush in December)

Trying to decide between:

2000: Great summer; great friends made; beginning of senior HS year.
2009: Best yet professional contacts firmly established; certain events happened that sort of reinvented me out of doldrums and onto a long journey of doing what I want.

I just realize these years bracket the Bush administration.

Handjobs for a sport (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 01:30 (fourteen years ago)

Not my decade. The '08 campaign was big for me, so '08. Music and movies blur together, and the Jays did nothing all decade. Personally and professionally, one year is the next is the next.

Years that seemed to have the most "momentum" were definitely 2000 and 2006.

scissorlocks and the three bears (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really think about years in this way. Like, I've never had a New Years Eve where I've said "good riddance."

That said, I do think about 2005 a lot. In some ways, it was a "low point" for me -- I was bitter about love, I probably drank too much, I barely got any sleep -- but all of that also took me to some interesting places: I obsessed about music and writing, I had a brief and intense long-distance friendship, I searched my soul, etc.

So I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be my "favorite" year, but it is the one that initially stands out, maybe partly because it's a relatively recent year that nonetheless feels so different from my current life.

jaymc, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

Wait, what was the year with the most mullet/tunic overlap on hipster girls? I kinda want to say 2005? That would be a serious contender.

cia never wore tie-dyes (kkvgz), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

2005 i was in los angeles, young and full of hope. it was a fun year at the time – and it seems kind of pathetic in retrospect.

2000, which was the year my wife and I moved from Ohio to Virginia, where we stayed for the next seven years, giving us a much-needed break from our hometown and a lot more opportunities in our life. On balance, though, the decade definitely sucked.

Paul McCartney and Whigs (Phil D.), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

Some riotous good times for me in '01, and a lot of travel. It was the last genuinely reckless, freewheeling year of my dying youth & a good way to go out. Sadly, my waywardness led directly to the cataclysmic events of that fateful day, the 11th of September. Everything since has more or less sucked.

mari$$a marchant (Pillbox), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

2001 was the worst year for me, personally, even before 9/11. It was the year that the shit hit the fan. Denial about the general shittiness of my employment situation, accelerated by some very hard drinking/partying, all came to a head. I quit a job a few days before Christmas, because I found out that half of us were going to be made redundant in the New Year after working a stupid holiday season schedule for no extra money. 2002-2006 was pretty bad as the psychological fallout from that situation continued and my life was pretty much in freefall.
So I voted 2007, as it was the first year that I felt I'd got some of my shit back together. I started to feel like the person I am today. It was the year I got back into making music after a break of nearly a decade. Also six months of intense lurking on ILX before making my first post! (still think 'Blackout' is the best track on '"Heroes"', fuiud)

2001 was going so badly for me by September 11 that I had a really surly, dismissive attitude about it all at the time. I did not saturate myself in media and I still haven't devoted much time to learning about the event. It never resonated with me the way I imagine it resonated with most everybody else, although I was passionately annoyed by the chaos that erupted afterward.

cia never wore tie-dyes (kkvgz), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

2005. Right in the middle of my PhD when the pressure still hadn't kicked in. Spent that summer just hanging out in coffee shops with friends and good conversation. Great year for music too!

daavid, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Has to be 2006, the last time I took a major vacation - Arizona and Nevada. Had a car with me too, drove through the desert.

2001 would have been great except for that 9/11 thing.

2007. Bought a house unexpectedly and moved in with my now wife. Work was good. I was healthy. Had some stuff published in a newspaper and also a book. Music was terrific. Went to some excellent gigs. Good weather as I recall. Just a good year, especially as 2008 was a cesspit, and 2009 was a transition period. 2010 blew the whole decade out if the water, though, and 2011 is shaping up well too.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 21 April 2011 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

2010 saw me get a wicked new job, get married, have an awesome honeymoon in NYC, got a bike and spent the summer riding and thus improved my fitness massively, plus Emma got a wicked new job too, there was loads of cool music around (and films too), we ordered a new car, I started writing again. 2010 slays the 00s.

Shocked to say 2000: new house, interesting job, cool friends, growing up a lot, not yet hooked up with 2001 arsehole. 2002-4 festered in a city I disliked. 2005-6 were fun times but professional frustration. 2007-8 were just fucking hard work and so much stress I started talking to myself walking along the street. 2009 was an emotional bloodsucker.

2004 was my worst of the decade. Massive comedown after the heights of 2003.

Alba, Friday, 29 April 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

mine woulda been 2008. everything just kinda aligned, I was doing very well at work, had a very successful theatre year, reunited with estranged friends, and had rebounded from a really long period of first major, then minor depression.

last year was pretty good overall too but not as good as 08.

Worst year woulda been 2000 -- don't like to remember those times!
