i think abt this a lot - more w/r/t to 'art' than on a personal level but there too - & really struggle w/ the degree to which seeking out feedback becomes its own kind of limiting narcissism

like is there a point @ which the drive for self-knowledge/self-improvement/growth impairs itself & the only real goal is to unthink & just ~be in the world~ or is this just an argument that one uses to shield oneself from the pain of personal reevaluation

I know my personality well enough to know I am basically too neurotic for anonymous & acontextual criticism – I will imagine all kinds of things into it the author probably didn't intend. Also my friends are the kind of people who will say this stuff, tactfully, to me – or at least I feel it enriches my life to maintain this illusion. Also I find it v irritating to ask for criticism & then ppl are like, 'naw u just the best' followed by a pinch of my big apple cheek. Which is totally vain to assume what would happen, sorry if it comes off as a backdoor brag, but look at ahoyhoy's.

the problem i have with it is that it's public, which makes it really contrived. like, you're as likely to get honest answers with this as you would get natural responses from your standard social practices art project. Everyone's aware that it's an act, a performance, a forced situation.

and because it's public, it's embarrassing ... or it has that potential. It's like when someone provides "helpful advice on yr posting style" on some thread. It just comes across as condescending and makes the recipient defensive because they're put in the spotlight as "having a problem."

this is otm w/r/t art or at least photographic or at least some of the photography I look at. people are able to go out and shoot and upload pix and get thumbs up/thumbs down within an hour. it's really led to this concretization of aesthetics/stagnation in some of the kinds of photography I love.

as for opening one self to criticism, yeah idg that. normally I just try to ask myself what I admire in other people and then strive towards that.
