John Hodgman appreciation thread

My favorite nerd celebrity. His podcast is a pleasant way to pass time. His books are the best, though. I haven't laughed so hard at any book since Areas of My Expertise in years, and I read it while my husband was in the hospital (I think my laughter & sharing funny parts aloud started to irritate him). So his book was funny even in the midst of life being shitty and awful. His other book brought the lols in totally normal circumstances so I can vouch that he is funny at all times.

I love his politeness, and his mind for collecting facts & trivia.

i love this dude. and yeah the books are just about perfect.

Someone on Daily Show described him as "a pillow wrapped in a hug."

Oh wait I do but from the daily show and the MAC/PC commercials but will watch/check out the books cause I trust Abbs.

They are sort of fake trivia books.

The books are great! His podcast lives and dies with the relative smugness of his guests though.

i realize that the character he often plays (in the Mac commercials especially but also to an extent on The Daily Show and definitely on Bored To Death) is supposed to be kind of unlikable or unsympathetic but i think that's kind of seeped into me not really having any particularly positive feelings toward him. he is really funny on TDS sometimes though.

only seen him on bored to death basically so i feel sort of the same way. will try his podcast and see if that changes it.

His new book just came out and it is just as funny as the others! I am dying from laughter and from the restraint of not reading all of it out loud to anyone nearby.

this is crazy! his character on BTD is a pathetic and mean-spirited nemesis of the main character, and his segment on the Daily Show is called 'you're welcome' and is all about him being totally smug and in love w/ himself. obv this doesn't make me dislike him as a person or think he's really like that, but it does give him kind of an unlikable aura that i have a hard time getting past.

i get the feeling also that this would be a dude worth having sign your book, kinda like when i went to a mark leyner (yeah yeah shutup) book signing and he wrote this deranged and kinda uncomfortably personalized little mini story in my copy of tooth imprints on a corn dog.

didnt hurt that only like 8 other people showed up in that case tho

i didn't like the theme song, but more than that, i didn't like the kind of thinking that thought that theme song was a good idea, if that's what you mean. (I hate the WTF themesong, too, though)

also i don't think hodgman had anything to do with the theme song, though his college roommate jonathan coulton might have, in which case i think we should take any negative vibes and transfer them onto jonathan coulton.

That was a little strange. Was hoping he'd bust out "NAHMEAN?" at least once for variety's sake. Still love this guy. Maybe even more after finding out he dressed like Tom Baker and carried a briefcase in high school.
