...eight alans, formidable brutes...

A quote from Flaubert's Three Tales. On page 63 of the Penguin Classics edition, six pages into The Legend Of St Julian Hospitator, is this:

In a yard by themselves, growling, shaking their chains, and rolling their eyes, were eight alans, formidable brutes which would fly at a horseman's belly and were not afraid of lions.

This is so close to my impression of Alan Trewartha that I had to post it here, though I don't know if Alan ever met Flaubert (I've not checked my dates on this one...).

New "he always struck me as a formidable brute too" answers.

Of course we don't actually need to do the New Answers bit now, as the thread appears anyway!

Flaubert dismally fails to address the Photoshop skills of anyone in any of his novels. Well, I've not read The Temptation Of Saint Anthony yet (almost certainly about Mr Easton, I assume), so maybe there is lots about mangling pictures of kittens in that, possibly.

Actually I think these alans are dogs, but I've never come across a dog called alan. Well, yes I have, but it was named Alan, not of the breed alan, if you see what I mean.

EIGHT alangs is just being greedy. we are very happy with the alang we have (plus, any more and they'd just get rowdy)

As I was flying at a horseman's belly the other night... eh? so is "alan" some sort of slang for dog/breed of dog? great.
