Which US state should secede from the Union -- a crucial POLL with extreme ramifications!

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

You have the option to shun one of the 50 states and force it to secede, cutting it off from the United States. Then, using Stan Lee-esque science, you get to tinker with the plate tectonics overnight, and detach the landmass and send it floating away to sea to become an island.

Which state's complete disappearance do you think would make you an assload happier? And more important, WHY? (not necessarily the WORST or LAMEST state, but the one that pisses you off the most)

Read this as "assoload hipster."

Thought briefly about Florida. It was the only serious competitor to Texas. Voted Texas with no further hesitation.

Aimless, Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

i voted Alabama. it just reeks of 1945!

suge knight rider (Neanderthal), Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

also, with hawaii gone, this country could get itself a proper/white president at last

south dakota always seem to turn up in the news doing something fucking stupid. that is my instinctive choice.

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

they just need to tear down the wall and resume operations as Dakota

suge knight rider (Neanderthal), Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

Arizona - then the southern half of the country would be more symmetrical.

sarahel, Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

would also greatly reduce Tea Party funding

no "keep them all, I love this beautiful union" option?

Wannabe ILXor Pussies Out After Taking One Ban (absolutely clean glasses), Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Either:

Colorado - because a) it would be funny to have a huge rectangular lake in the middle of America, and b) it would be funny to have a huge rectangular island parked somewhere.

Or:

Michigan - because then there'd be fewer Great Lakes to remember.

I like this concept better if the state just gets to be its own country, the united state of california would be rad

iatee, Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

The latter could even be incorporated into a 60's tribute band - Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Michigan and Tich.

TX just makes the most sense, but AZ and the Southeast in general can basically eat a dick.

confederate terror anchor babies (will), Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

I think the problem with those states is that they don't have enough people who eat dicks.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

New Mexico ain't so terrible as all that. It has a culture, even.

Aimless, Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

Alaska. It confuses my grade 6 students, my own country would feel less vulnerable to a surprise attack, and--well, you can guess the rest.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

I think the problem with those states is that they don't have enough people who eat dicks.

oh, they're there. but in lieu of just shutting up and eating the dicks they write legislation forbidding teachers from saying "gay" in the classroom of public schools. self-hating dick-eaters.

want to vote south carolina but removing texas would probably have the best impact on the country so voted for that

It's the huge Colorado island that excites me. I've been looking on Google Maps to see where I'd put it. It's too big for the Mediterranean.

i would consider shipping FL out, even if it meant sacrificing my life

suge knight rider (Neanderthal), Saturday, 30 April 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

I live in Florida, but I'd be fine with losing it provided I was given notice and could move first. My second choice is Arizona.

i voted Alabama. it just reeks of 1945!

Institutional racism was creating that stench. It's not an issue anymore except for in the deepest darkest corners of the state. Now all you can smell is the world's best BBQ!

w/o getting into BBQ debate #4,783, the Carolinas DO have great BBQ...especially the mustard/vinegar sauce that's SC's specialty. Truth be told, I'm down with most barbeque as long as the sauce is vinegar-based and not that heavy red/brown shit. (Also, shredded is way better than sliced.)

Definitely Texas. No question. Not because it's a terrible place, because it's not, and not because the Union would be beter off without them. It's that they know how to do it. They've crowbarred their way out of five governments before this one -- no other state can say that. They have plenty of guns, they have a huge population, they have plenty of skilled and educated citizens, and enough land to be truly self-sustaining. The fear, though, as it so often is in the Middle East, is that the new government will not be a democracy, it will be an Ayatollah.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

MES said something around '04 about playing in TX and how universally reviled Dubya was there, even by the "rednecks"...

I believe it; read something else about the female Democrat who suceeded W as governor, and how she was one of TX's most beloved governors...am I getting this right at all, Hoos?

ST 337 (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

hmmm well W was succeeded by his lt gov Rick Perry, who for all intents and purposes has been King of Texas for 11 years, but i imagine you might be thinking of ann richards who preceded W as gov & was defeated by him in 95 but remained pretty universally beloved til her death in 06

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 01:45 (fourteen years ago)

dubya beat kerry w/ a 23% margin in texas in 04, I don't think that's universally reviled
