Thought briefly about Florida. It was the only serious competitor to Texas. Voted Texas with no further hesitation.

Colorado - because a) it would be funny to have a huge rectangular lake in the middle of America, and b) it would be funny to have a huge rectangular island parked somewhere.

w/o getting into BBQ debate #4,783, the Carolinas DO have great BBQ...especially the mustard/vinegar sauce that's SC's specialty. Truth be told, I'm down with most barbeque as long as the sauce is vinegar-based and not that heavy red/brown shit. (Also, shredded is way better than sliced.)

They have plenty of guns, they have a huge population, they have plenty of skilled and educated citizens, and enough land to be truly self-sustaining. The fear, though, as it so often is in the Middle East, is that the new government will not be a democracy, it will be an Ayatollah.

hmmm well W was succeeded by his lt gov Rick Perry, who for all intents and purposes has been King of Texas for 11 years, but i imagine you might be thinking of ann richards who preceded W as gov & was defeated by him in 95 but remained pretty universally beloved til her death in 06

dubya beat kerry w/ a 23% margin in texas in 04, I don't think that's universally reviled

although by the end of his term in 08 he was widely seen as a failure & embarassment even among people who were really excited about palin
