most memorable meal...

When I was young and visiting France with my parents we drove hours out of our way to a little place on the water somewhere and it was closed - our guidebook had made a mistake. Having already expended our energy on the trip over, we were completely unable to decide what to eat, so we simply got back on the road. We passed some Moroccan place on the road and decided to go in.

I remember the plate of couscous being larger than anything I had ever seen, and I remember the taste of the juice from the meats mixed with the couscous and especially the vegetable soup that was good enough to stop me from being the picky eater I had been at that time. I was young, so this is all I can remember.

Part of what makes the meal so special to me, besides the incredible tastes, is the fact that I will never be able to find the the place again.

What are your most fondly-remembered meals?

out of tradition, here is the post to make this thread an answered one.

The most memorable dessert I ever had was a "Stove of St. Jacques," which we ordered without asking questions. It turned out to be a stove made of chocolate with mini-chocolate saucepans containing apricot and raspberry sauces on the stove's burners. When the waiter served it, he lifted up the stove to reveal a chocolate ganache underneath and then picked the saucepans off the stove and poured the sauces on the ganache. Do you see?

After I was on a 2 week hike eating fairly well but still hikecaliber food, I had a steak dinner and It was, in comparison to the meals of the previous 2 weeks, great.

That dessert is utterly and totally wonderful. Oh yes.

Memorable meals for me have to do with context, as Aaron notes, as much as what was served. A meal that always stands out in my head was in the San Juan Islands in 1994, celebrating the 80th birthday of my grandma. It was a lovely night in an isolated restaurant, and of the food I particularly remember a brilliant corn chowder -- but the whole evening was just a dream. :-)

I have had plenty of good meals since I posted this thread, but I am still reeling over a recent one: The local Thai place has never been anything special at all, just a decent place to get a cheap lunch while fantasizing about other thai restaurants. recently, my mom offered to pick up something for me for takeout. I couldn't remember what I usually ate there so I had her read a few things from the menu when she got there. I ended up ordering chicken with a garlic-cilantro-pepper sauce, and it was exquisite. I have never seen a sauce like that on a menu before, and I am not sure why I skipped over it numerous times, but I now have a new favorite entree.

I arrived late and alone for the first time in Paris. After ditching my stuff at the hotel I just started walking. at around 3am I walked into Le Fouquets and had an amazing Steak au Poivre with frittes and a bottle of wine. The waiters were very friendly and quickly urged me to stop mangling French. I was too excited/jet-lagged to realize that I had spent something like $80 dollars by myself - which I have never regretted. best meal ever.

spending a lot on a good meal, especially ateak and wine, with no pretense, is so classic.

I went to the Birchrunville Store Cafe with my parents for their wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. The place is small, in the same building as the town post office. A stream doesn't just run outside the restaurant, but underneath it as well. It is surrounded by farms with sheep and horses. In other words, fucking perfect. The meal?

Appetizer: Venison carpaccio drizzled with a sweet wasabi reduction.

Main Course: Pork chop with lemon zested fingerling potatoes and a basil-mint orzo.

Dessert: Raspberry napoleon.

I don't think that I will ever eat better. Ever.
