Best Horror Film of 1995 (part 24 of a series)

This was probably the last really bleak year for horror movies in the 90's imo. Still, I seem to recall enjoying a few of these, like The Addiction, The Prophecy, and Species.

Remember thinking even a relatively highlight like The Prophecy was maybe one of the worst movies of the year.

I've hardly seen any of these. Species is terrible. Screamers is okay, more of a sci-fi film really. Don't remember a thing about Tales from the Hood, but I know I saw it.

Ugh. "Species." Features the scene where Forest Whitaker, psychic, comes across a room sprayed with blood and stammers "I sense ... something bad happened here." And it's not played for laughs. Was it the first or the third with the tagline "don't mate on the first date?"

LOL... I was smoking a lot of weed back in those days so my recs for mid-90's horror films are probably for shit

I remember going to see Species with a friend, and sitting in front of us at this R-rated film were three unaccompanied kids, about 11-12 years old. In the scene where Michael Madsen and Marg Helgenberger get bizzay in a hotel room, one of the kids gasped at the top of his lungs, "She's giving him a blowjob!" I leaned forward and smacked him in the back of the head.

Therefore, I vote for Species.

I had a demon knight poster when I was a kid. guess I'll vot4e for that. by no means a great movie but it has a couple nice gory bits iirc. and this isn't saying much but it's way better than the completely horrible bordello of blood.

have always been vaguely curious about the scanner cop series but not curious enough to bite the bullet and watch one of em.

i watched the first one i think, love the idea that the Scanners have taken on a life of their own in low budget horror flicks. the one i saw was unmemorable tho. then again, Cronenberg's movie barely counts as a Horror flick imo

lol I'm p sure both Huntress: Spirit of the Night & Sorceress are softcore flicks

oh i didn't realise that Pierre David who directed Scanner Cop was an exec producer on Scanners and other Cronenberg movies

Embrace of the Vampire is the source for the famous Alyssa Milano lesbian screenshots iirc

yeah, I kind of love the weird universe of scanners knock-offs, but they also look terrible, so I don't feel compelled to watch em.

also, this is a hilarious poster:

Had to vote for Species, in the end. At least it was amusing.

I recall liking Candyman 2 at the time, though. The cinematography struck me as rather beautiful.

Habit, a Larry Fessenden movie, isn't all-time but is pretty damn good for a mid-nineties indie horror flick

I remember thinking the Scanner sequels were passable attempts to do something with the premise, though by the time they got to 'Scanner Cop' they were clearly out of steam.

species is the perfect movie for 12 year olds

haven't seen many of these. from what i remember:

301, 302 - solid (if predictable) korean horror-drama about people who like to eat things and people who do not
The Addiction - arty indie vampire flick from Abel Ferrara, haven't seen it in ages, but found it rather trying at the time
Castle Freak - one of Stuart Gordon's weaker films, but it's got great locations, decent atmosphere and a truly grotesque monster
Habit - another arty indie vampire flick set in NYC, this one from Larry Fessenden - remember liking it a bit more than The Addiction
Lord of Illusions - witless, embarrassing goth nonsense
The Mangler - good gore, otherwise worthless
Screamers - decent sci-fi thriller, nothing to write home about
Species - entertaining trash about a horny alien woman
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight - funny/trashy action horror with a great Billy Zane performance
Village of the Damned - pointless remake

pretty underwhelming crop. i guess it's between 301 302, Castle Freak and Demon Knight. voting Castle Freak just because.

i remember this. i only remember this. i think it must have been the hardest i ever laughed during a movie in the 90's.

Would've voted for The Addiction. Ferrara = greatest horror director ever? Maybe so.

Man, I was waiting for this one too so I could vote for Lord of Illusions. ooops.
