anyone know the options for a man who is in great debt yet has no money? other than faking his own death, that is.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

and yes, practical information welcome, despite knowing i won't get any.

Have you tried a debt consolidation place?

does two guys in an alley count?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

(in case you haven't realized, i'm rather new and inexperienced at this whole owing thousands and thousands of dollars to various companies/state organizations/etc. thing.)

does two guys in an alley count?

Not if it involves grabbing your ankles.

You might want to try contacting someplace like Ameridebt and seeig what your options are.

Avoid filing for that personal bankruptcy deal, it sounds like that's just an excuse to make Bush happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Leave the country and get your shit together. It worked for me!!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the bankruptcy thing sounds even dicier lately, because congress is trying to make the penalties stricter.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, like i'm gonna take advice from the guy who invented emo.

bankruptcy isn't really an option because the debts aren't that great (at least not great enough to make it worthwhile), but since my net income right now is, uh, nil, things are looking grimmer all the time.

dan's suggestion seems the most sensible so far.

(no one's answered the debtors prison question yet.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Despise me, Jess, and the emo will grow...

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(my emo fear is merely self-loathing.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess = emo shockah!

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

IT'S A SCANDAL!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey and Jess: keep in mind that even short of debt consolidation there are surely plenty of public or non-profit debt and credit counseling agencies in your area -- they'll sit down with you for free and go over your situation and run down your options, which if nothing else will at least make you feel a bit more hopeful about things.

(My mother used to work doing this, and it was my personal experience that if you went to her and said "Mom, I desperately need money," she might even give you some. This may not hold true for credit counselors who are not your mother.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch peer pressure coming from you is pretty low on the ol force there

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, I don't think they still send people to prison for debt, becasue most of us would be locked up:) But the first step is for you to take the plunge and find out what you can do to avoid more damage your credit. One thing I learned is that people are willing to work with you if your straight up with them, but you gotta keep making the monthly payments. When I finallly got around to finding out my credit histoy it really wasn't that bad and I've set up payments that I can afford. A year later their sending me credit cards. Good luck

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I read this statistic a couple of years ago that the most commone reason for women in New Zealand to be in prison is for debt.

maryann, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

'Commone' is the way to say 'common' without sounding commone.
