I remember as a kid being baffled that a state's 'best' city was often not its capital

like new york state's capital is... albany! ???

I think they did it purposely to make them all harder for 4th graders to memorize

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't been to any of these places or know anything about them except Sacramento which is where I live so...hey at least Sacramento will get 1 vote lol

I sorta like sacramento

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

also I think if sf or la were the capital of california they would probably be worse places

my aunt just completed her quest to visit all 50. i'd ask her what her pick is, but i'd get a 4 hour monologue augmented by 400 photos.

only 400? that's less than 10 per state!

Helena Montana and Cheyenne Wyoming sound promising to me. I picture cowboys and mountain skylines. Also in my mind Wyoming and Montana are pretty much one giant conglomerate state "Wytana" because I don't know enough about either to know the true difference. Cowboys, horses and mountains is all I know.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 May 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

I think I knew/would have guessed about half of those

Cheyenne is one of the grodiest parts of Wyoming (iirc). I mean it is still rich in natural beauty compared to...somewhere that isn't...but so much of Wyoming is so much prettier. Not that I've been there since age six but I remember my reaction to the place was 'why are we in this ugly hellhole where the wind is half dirt.'

I voted Santa Fe! Was tempted to vote Boise, tho, bcz it really is the best city in Idaho. Also one of those state capitols that's small towny enough where hypothetically you can just run into the governor on the street & rant at him if you want.

the seventy-four point threeth percentile (Abbbottt), Friday, 20 May 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

After my NM trip last year, I'm thinking I'll give Santa Fe another vote.

WmC, Friday, 20 May 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

In fifth grade I spent a lot of time making this comic book called Topeka because I though it was an awesome word. It was about this alien species of Topekas that lived on a planet called Topeka. The Topekas just looked like Yoshi (who I was v into drawing at the time). Most of the dialogue was the word "Topeka."

the seventy-four point threeth percentile (Abbbottt), Friday, 20 May 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

atlanta or honolulu

Yeah, the one time I was there it was incredibly windy, and all this dust/dirt was flying around. I had never experienced anything like that previously.

The nearest Dunkin Donuts to Columbia, Mo., in the 90s was in Jeff City.

But come to think of it, that waitress may have driven in from Fulton.

PHOENIX - Yellow street lights made me think I was in a KFC kitchen.
LITTLE ROCK - Ted Danson has a condo here.
DENVER - Hip, young, vibrant city where everyone drinks COORS.
ATLANTA - Went there in 2002 and I'm still stuck in traffic.
SPRINGFIELD - Not sure if I've ever been there or not. That's the capital of Chicago, right?
DES MOINES - Beautiful skyline, clean place to live, easy to get around. Too bad I never stopped the car.
BATON ROUGE - I think that waitress at the Red Star was kinda into me.
BOSTON - See Atlanta
ST. PAUL - Never did find all the Snoopies.
JACKSON - The public restrooms at the state capitol are exquisite (the ones for white people anyway.)
JEFFERSON CITY - Not to sound like a puss, but this bridge was kinda scary.
CONCORD - It's state capitol looked like a county courthouse… now that's Moxie!
RALEIGH - Just had to check a map to see if I have been there. (Yes.)
COLUMBUS - Turn right to go to New York.
OKLAHOMA CITY - Saw a big sister hock and spit a loogie toward her little brother at a Texaco.
PROVIDENCE - Used the bathroom at a McDonalds just to say I had set foot in R.I.
COLUMBIA - See Raleigh.
NASHVILLE - I still have the Boceaphus playing cards.
AUSTIN - If you like hippies, then you'll love them when they're sweaty and armed.
CHARLESTON - All I remember is using a payphone (in front of a McDonalds).
MADISON - Slept through it.
