Teach me all about Victoria Day

I see on my wall calendar that tomorrow is Victoria Day (presumably in Canada, possibly in the entire Commonwealth). I know nothing of this festive occasion. Zero. Zilch. Total ignorance.

How is this fine holiday celebrated by our many non-American English-speaking brethren? I long to find out.

This then is a day when all her majesty's subjects go sporting about seeking personal amusement?

Pretty much?

If it's Victoria Day weekend, that means I've missed another FIMAV. Shoot!

it's also commonly known as "May two four weekend", the two four meaning the date, queen vic's bday, and/or a case of 24 beers, which says it all really

In Ontario, many people celebrate by getting written up for creative traffic violations on the way home from their cottages: three wheels, letting the family dog drive, new land speed records, etc.

Waht? Not only does Victoria get her own day, but Elizabeth II gets her birthday celebrated, too? So, what about Elizabeth I? And all those Georges? And Alfred the FUCKING GREAT!? What about a bit of perspective here?

The Black Prince Day must be the best.

I dunno, I assumed our hol was just "this one happens to be the queen so yay let off some firecrackers"

The hilaro bit is, her birthday isnt even *in* June o_0

I have never even heard of this, so it isn't a thing in the UK, except apparently for Edinburgh, where it's still a public holiday. ???

And we don't get a day off for either of the Queen's birthdays, the "official birthday" in June or her real birthday in April.

In my part of Canada, Victoria Day (or 'May long' as locals call it) is celebrated by making plans to go camping, getting really excited about said plans, and then spending the weekend at the campsite wrapped up in rain gear and/or winterwear because it's effing Alberta and it's cold for 9 months of the year and you can really only go camping for a brief 2-month stretch in July and August when it's actually hot.

In the 60s in Ontario and Quebec there were a few years where Victoria Day was celebrated by youth riots and moral panics. This sounds much more interesting and worthwhile to me than going camping in the cold.

NB: Some ilxor should write a musical for Queen Elizabeth's birthday and entitle it "Corgi and Bess".

Aimless, Monday, 23 May 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

Never mind. Google has 50,000 hits on "Corgi and Bess". I am deeply ashamed.
