have you been to Baltimore? do you live in Baltimore? what did you do when you went there? what would you recommend? where did you stay? where are good places to stay? information please!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently it has the highest rate of heroin addiction and sexually transmissable disease in the Western World = party town!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

a hard town by the sea.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to go to Baltimore and see John Waters and Edith's Shopping Bag (is that even still there anymore?).

Elisabeth, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I got the train through Baltimore once. the bit the train goes through looks like stereotypical unbelievably scary urban hell.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I spent a few days there about a decade ago. The waterfront is worth wandering around on, but I can't say I found a lot there to interest me. Of course then it hadn't hosted possibly my favourite TV series, Homicide: Life On The Street, so that might add an extra appeal.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I loved Baltimore too! (Take everything I say about eastern seaboard US cities with a pinch of salt - I'd have probably had a great time in Beirut with the company I had).

Highlights: the waterfront/Fells Point, the diners, the accent, The Brothers' strange and terrifying junk shop... ah, I should really wait until Pam gets home to do it justice.

Lowlight: the Keith Jarrett CD I bought for $2 from The Sound Garden which turned out to a 1979 Cars album when I cracked it open. Unfortunately picked it up from the 'no returns, no bitching, no whining' section.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonesy, that $2 has generated way, way more than $2 worth of conversation, consider it a bargain.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, when I heard Baltimore mentioned in "take That Look Off Your Face" in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical "Tell Me On A Sunday" I imagined it was somewhere near Boston, Lincolnshire. Maybe somone told me it was near Boston?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Hit musical in what sense Tim? It was snever staged.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Hit musical in the Lost Consonants sense.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been there twice! Stayed with this straight guy from college who had sex with me when we got drunk once. But only once.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to college there, and got drunk once with this guy named Sean, but I don't remember...

JUST KIDDING!

Baltimore rules. When I lived there, I loved the Mt. Royal Tavern, the Rondez-Vous Lounge, the Ottobar, duh byoo-tee-full myoo-zic uf duh die-leck, Bolton Hill, the SoWeBohemian festival, Fells Point, Thairish on Charles Street, Federal Hill, the American Visionary Art Museum, Little Italy (pronounced Lil Itlee), duh Abnoo (spelled Avenue) in Hampden -- oh, many, many things.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Camden Yards (the baseball stadium) looks nice and the crabcakes there are supposed to be special somehow. It's one of those towns I suspect has much more going for it than you'd think (Pittsburgh being the other).

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i got drunk in a sailors bar in baltimore.

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 25 August 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Baltimore is great, it reminded me of Manchester for some reason.

Highlight: the waitress calling me "Hon" and making me so befuddled I asked for a cheese chomelette.

I don't know if Edith's shopping bag is there any more as Edith Massey died in 1984. Maybe they kept it open to preserve her memory, bless her.

tag, Sunday, 25 August 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

If you like Italian pastries, there is a place called Vacarro's (sp) in Litle Italy that makes great cookies and cakes, as well as decent coffee. A nice place to go after dinner.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems its very expensive to stay in, as i was only going to stay there one night, would i be better staying another night in DC and just visiting it by day?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Next time I see Tag I'm going to refer to him as the Hun.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't look at this thread without the intro to Nina Simone's 'Baltimore' coming into my head. It's Randy Newman's really but he can't sing.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll wup your ass if you do Hopkins. I'm Saint Johnstone through and through.

I think Mary is right about Gareth, I really like Baltimore. The waterfront place was lovely. I was only there for a couple hours but I decided I will move there for two months exactly at some point in my life on the basis of this excursion. It is much better than DC which I have never been v. fond of and less fond of now that there is risk of running into coworkers all over that bitch.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, I was kind of frightened of Baltimore.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well they sure seemed to like to wear purple.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And that frightens me.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

home of the misdemeanor homicide

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit that seas of purple people are kind of scary. Especially sweaty ones that I saw, that was kind of gross. Everything else was really nice though.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure you didn't accidently go to Oompa-Loompa Land?

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just outside Baltimore.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

They all seemed kind of tall for Oompa Loompas...?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What is pretty cool about Baltimore is driving in on 95 from the south and coming in from the sky on this giant downward slope and you can see the city all around you and then BAM! you're in the middle of the touristy area with all these crazy tourists milling about and the aquarium and Camden Yards and stuff. It's quite impressive.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, if you're gonna do that, definitely take the MLK exit in - you go right between the two stadia.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It is impressive! Then you quickly get lost just past the Inner Harbor & drive around past empty warehouses for hours... :)

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Creative Alliance has been doing some special music events at other locations in Baltimore. I saw Innov Gnawa, a Moroccan group based in NY do a special Moroccan Jewish music program at Bnai Israel synagogue.

On Nov. 11th they are doing a special soul program at the Arch Social Club with the great Winfield Parker and others

amazing that she barely squeaked out a win against SHEILA DIXON in 2016

friend of mine said Pugh might be worse than SRB. hard to say - SRB presided over a major crisis, didn't do a good job, made a lot of mistakes, & was generally incompetent. and though my first instinct re: Pugh's book scam is garden variety corruption, it is pretty despicable, and a lot worse than the gift cards or whatever Dixon did.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 April 2019 21:27 (six years ago)

Right wing Sinclair TV local news network chief David Smith bought the Baltimore Sun and will likely kill it in a Republican way.

NPR's David Folkenflik tweet-

The Baltimore Sun's new owner, David D. Smith, met with staffers today for more than two hours. Many left on edge.

He claimed he had read the paper just four times. He grew up here; his family's local TV empire - Sinclair - is based in Baltimore Co.

It's vehicles we see in the middle section right

Nabozo, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 09:06 (one year ago)

I'm thinking this is the biggest structure I see collapsing since WTC. Much more closer in time, the highway bridge in Genoa.
Hoping there were as few people as possible on the bridge. It's crazy if workers were allowed on the bridge after the cargo hit.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 09:10 (one year ago)

there's a longer video here and you can see the volume of traffic and how quickly it came down after the impact, don't think anyone had much of a chance to do anything

Here's a longer and higher quality video of the Baltimore bridge collapse. Crash and collapse happens at 2:34 #Baltimore https://t.co/qMDsAG01z6 pic.twitter.com/k5cVY5DqXI

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 14:10 (one year ago)

massive exhaust plume might have been engine trouble?

What I read is that this is indicative of the engines going full reverse in order to try to stop the ship. I read that the issue was probably with the steering of the ship, though everything is speculation at this point obviously.

silverfish, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 14:18 (one year ago)

xpost One dead and six missing according to Reuters. One saving grace is it happened when it did, hate to think if it happened a few hours earlier.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 14:30 (one year ago)

i want to hear the story of this one survivor who was reportedly uninjured and refused medical treatment. you just go about your day after that?

circa1916, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 14:39 (one year ago)

I can only imagine you go home, sit on the bed, and start shivering / weeping uncontrollably. Also, being useless to society for a few months.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 15:05 (one year ago)

possibly delayed shock

Ste, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 15:15 (one year ago)

The person may not have been thinking clearly. I know I wouldn’t be rational in a situation like that. Rationally, I’d want to go to hospital—I’m not a doctor maybe there is something wrong that’s subtle that paramedics didn’t catch.

I wonder what the legal reasons are you can’t just take someone to the hospital if they refuse it.

Slorg is not on the Slerf Team, you idiot, you moron (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 15:37 (one year ago)

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 16:04 (one year ago)

I wonder what the legal reasons are you can’t just take someone to the hospital if they refuse it.

If this person was able to leave under their own power, the first responders probably had no grounds to detain them. But I do hope this person does get a proper checkup soon.

Also, WHY did the Trump Administration--during its four years--NOT reinforce the Key Bridge against container ships? Was Infrastructure Week for nothing? Hey, I'm just asking questions here!
