I'd rather not- any reason to?

Latham Green, Monday, 30 May 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

you can drink and talk to ppl in an environment in which yr co-workers don't necessarily feel reigned in by constrictures of professionalism or whatever. wait why is this even a question? anytime i've ever done this it's been awesome, including when i worked at a church and this pastor bought me beers. and dispensed life wisdom, free of charge...

dell (del), Monday, 30 May 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

I do this all the time. At least one I now consider a friend, more so now he works somewhere else!

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 30 May 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

generally awesome and I've become friends with cool ppl at work bc of this. beware the potential dud tho when the kinda eccentric guy you work with gets drunk and corners you in the bar to first tell you his long boring where-he-was 9/11 story and then to berate you for some minor irrelevant shit.

Mordy, Monday, 30 May 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

I feel very wary of this - I don't think it will go well at all.

Latham Green, Monday, 30 May 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

is everyone you work with an asshole?

are you an asshole?

if neither of those are true it will be fine.

dell (del), Monday, 30 May 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

Well I don,t really drink first of all, second of all the coworkers all seem like they hate each other so I'm not sure why they are agreeing to this at all anyway, and I don't eat gluten so I can bascially go there and have a salad as the rest get drunk

Latham Green, Monday, 30 May 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

you know i just wouldn't even leave the house if i were you

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Monday, 30 May 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

I actually think I have a solution for you Latham, tho ymmv esp if your company drug tests. I recommend some THC. No gluten issues, you don't have to drink, it'll inebriate you enough that you won't feel totally left out of the drinking and it'll ease up on your (pretty self-evident, I'd say, tho forgive me if I'm reading too much into it) social anxieties enough that you might enjoy yourself.

Mordy, Monday, 30 May 2011 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

this isn't exactly like deciding whether or not to start a nuclear war -- you go to a bar for a few hours & if it sucks, it sucks & if it doesn't, it doesn't

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

mordy you realise that smoking weed could amplify those 'social anxieties'

Many people, myself included, get quite paranoid on weed.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 30 May 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

definitely betraying my biases here but my experience with ppl who get paranoid weed is that they haven't smoked enough and in the right setting, w/ the right ppl, after a few times, i've never met someone for whom it didn't start being enjoyable. oh, but look, this thread is now totally derailed. happy to continue conversation in other thread tho...

Mordy, Monday, 30 May 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

i've smoked a lot of weed man and i don't think that's the ish really.

but back on topic, it's going out for a drink, after the first 3 or 4 it will be classic even if yr co-workers are complete idiots. especially if yr co-workers are complete idiots.

another idea: bring a non-work friend so if your colleagues are just too much you can kinda retreat with someone u already know and like

Mordy, Monday, 30 May 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

that's a better idea

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Every time I have gone for drinks with my coworkers, the only topic of conversation was work. So if you like complaining outside of work about work with people at your work, and you like the environment of a bar, it can be fun. Perhaps you can guess I am not the #1 fan of this. However, I think it is one of those things you have to do at least once or twice if you are at a place for a while, to increase your perceived solidarity with your peers.

I don't tend to because I'm very unlike most of the people who work in my office/department, who are usually 10-20 years older than me, married w/ kids, and have stickers like "If anything can go well, it will" on their desks.

Like anytime I go out with em I just sit quietly and have an ok time but we're from different worlds. I do have a very close friend that's a co-worker though, and we hang out quite a bit.

When I worked in a restaurant, it was a different, cuz everyone was a degenerate, you could all smoke weed together, and plus Hell, after a loooooooooooooooooong brutal shift where you all busted your ass, it was fun to pound a few back afterwards.

The only conversations I've heard so far are food, shoes and work from the women and football, cricket and work from the men. Am dreading a bunch of solicitors saying "it's your round".

People in work != people out of work. Even the most annoying people in work are, I find, just like, normal outside of work, especially once after a pint or two. Getting drunk with someone and going off on adventures is one of humanity's oldest ways of getting to know someone, and it works. Of course, if you don't drink at all/much then ymmv, but then you'll just need less booze to act as the social lubricant.
