Does anyone drink it neat?

Since leaving university I've missed having my own supply that I can drink on a whim, and instead have to sneak a sip by pouring a little milk in the cup as if to make coffee, then drinking it when no one is looking and starting the coffee again (This may or may not be true).

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I drink milk every day.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. i often buy a pint instead of a can of coke. i find it more refreshing. and only full fat will do.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I drink milk. Why wouldn't you? (apart from the cow thing)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i.e. do not read if you are katie. again. is ILE turning anti-venga?

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

milk is yummy. i don't drink it neat so much these last few months, but i always used to. maybe i'm becoming a full grown cat or something.

doesn't everyone like milk?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

There is the myth that if you drink milk too fast, it turns into cheese on the way down. Maybe that puts some people off...?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It is nicer if it is chocolate milk (Frijj mmmmmm) but then most things are nicer in chocolate flavour. Sometimes a glass of milk is v. refreshing & good for fiting hangovers though since I only ever buy skimmed it is a bit yucky. Pete used to buy full fat and dribble it down his chin. Gross.

Emma, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yum Frijj.

Soya milk discussion is welcome on this thread.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk sans café/thé is delicious (provided it's not skimmed) and nutritious (provided it's at least semi-skimmed). The best way to have it, though is with a blob of honey, a teaspoon of cinnamon and a banana. In a blender.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I like milk with chocolate biscuits.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk is fantastic with lots of dinners too though avoid it with lamb chops or steak because it tends to solidify the grease from them in your mouth.

At work I steal a pint of milk a day, and a healthy packet of cigarettes for my break.

Also yes Milk and Chocolate biscuits=classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

you smoke a whole pack of cigarettes in your break? how long's your break?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't smoke them - he sells them to kids.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i never used to be able to stomach neat milk (always loved it on cereal though) but am beginning to develop a taste for it. organic skimmed = the only acceptable option, obviously.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

3 fags, 3 matches, rubber band. starter kit. do they still do this?

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I like milk. We get it at the farmer's market, certified organic, relatively happy cows, no hormones, full freakin' fat. At the grocery store in Vienna, you can get full fat or extra fat -- skim is in the healthfood ghetto by the soy milk.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not drink neat milk and as I don't have cereal either, my milk consumption is very low. I may have a bit in tea, but none in coffee which must be BLACK NO SUGAR or nothing.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there are only a few houses in the street (inc. mine) that still get milk delivered.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

No I only smoke one, and if it's raining and I can't open a window I find the car fills up and I come out feeling nauseous.

he sells them to kids

I'm talking about my break from working in the shop N.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

You take your break in your car? Why?

Emma, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't drink neat milk unless it was disguised w/ yoghurt and ice and bananas in a lassi. It's so gloopy. It makes me feel a bit sick just thinking about it.

Ellie (Ellie), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Neat milk is nummy but only if it's semi-skimmed. Full fat greases my mouth up somehting horrid and skimmed is too watery.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i have my break in my car, too. it's so that no fucker tries to talk to me. i sit in there and eat my lunch, how i like it: on my own. i used to smoke in my car too, and yeah, it got icky when it rained. i don't smoke anymore.

i've drunk milk in my car on rare occasions, too.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

skimmed is actually water with tippex in it.

Soy milk is the devil's own work.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

You take your break in your car? Why?

Cos the area I work in has the following alternatives, the side of the busy road, McDonalds, La Crossainterie, or the staff "canteen", a room with one chair in it. (and I've done McDonalds about 20 times).

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i drink a pint+ of calcium enriched milk everyday because i'm bad to the bone.

angela, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I never drink milk. To be perfectly honest, I don't think its actually occurred to me to drink milk outside tea or coffee for YEARS. Now I find that kinda weird.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I WAS GONNA THINK OF HAVING SOME MILK WITH NESCAU JUST BEFORE ENTERING THIS THREAD! Though milk with nescau is the only one i drink

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Ever since I stopped having cereal for breakfast in the morning I haven't regularly drunk milk or had it in the house -- but given my love for such things as cheese, I must still be dealing with it somehow. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh, how disgusting. Cow's milk is for babby cows not adult humans you nutters!
Apart from chocs I tend to avoid milk products as the gunk is just icky icky icky. NO milk in hot drinks and I have cold water on cereal.

also: cheese: worst foodstuff in creation.

DavidM (DavidM), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the full-fat type, and I only like it when really very cold. I never liked it with a cigarette, for some reason, but I don't smoke any more.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a big fan of mucus and I'm not a little calf, so I'm not a big fan of milk.

I thought it was odd how people were wretching at the thought of those lactating mothers having to drink their own breast milk before boarding their flights (however wrongful it was). At least that milk is intended for human consumption -- certainly less gross than drinking something meant for a baby cow. But I suppose it's a matter of taste.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

milk is totally gross you guys are tore up

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine putting breast milk in your coffee...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk is delicious. I drink extra rich milk. Buttermilk is probably my favorite thing to drink. Sometimes I even drink those little cartons of half and half. I can sort of understand not liking milk, but not liking cheese is truly subhuman! (unless you're a lactard, I suppose). Soy milk tastes like cardboard flavored water, though Vitasoy isn't so bad with cereal.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris we have the same brane!!!! Cold buttermilk is THE BEST milk product extant to consume unadorned!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand the fear of buttermilk; I mean, you go to a typical Indian restaurant and they always put fucking yogurt in the lassi instead of buttermilk. It always seems to freak people out when I order buttermilk at places that actually have it. Makes no sense at all (btw, I have appropriated your "Mail Order Bride" moniker for buttermilk & vodka; truly brilliant, captures the mood much better than "Stavrogin's Ulcer"!) Buttermilk out of the fridge is so tasty.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

and tangy!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's tangy at all, I get a dull fattiness from it that works particularly well at countering highly acidic flavors, such as sandwich peppers, capers, or tomato. Or fruits, obviously.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

there IS a spice to it Kris! - indefinable of course - a SNAP that lifts it beyond the ordinary - it plays the same role that kiwi skin plays vis-a-vis the fruit inside --> it gives definition to what would otherwise be too-smooth and uninteresting. but i agree that it has a calming effect on other foods. it's a GRATE foil for highNRG tastes. therefore, buttermilk + slim jims = nirvana! i am going to test this theory right now

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't drink soy milk neat, except if its soyaccino, chocolate or strawberry flavoured.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

my report... urk

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot drink soy at all - it's completely horrible. yet my vegan friend reckons it's the best invention in the world next to the lentil.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I drink only milk and water; milk because it neutralizes a lot of bad aftertastes (saltiness, spiciness, etc).

Leee, Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i have been considering buying some milk so that i can make more mexican hot chocolate - no decision as of yet. i have a container of milk in the fridge that my mom gave to me for some reason several months ago. note to self: do something about that. she drinks the nastiest milk possible, like skim or some such.

ron (ron), Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ive been haunted by milk based urban myths and thats precisly what they are, drawn up by conspiracy theorists i tells ya! Tipp ex and water and digesting milk into cheese I ask you. Skimmed milk is to host the next olympics, thats how great it is. Ooo the smoothness makes me feel like ive a guest appearence on Friends. Or something.
Does anyone remember the 80's(-late) era styled milk advert'like poster's?
-classic over dudd?

chrisb (chrisb), Thursday, 22 August 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Went through a big milk-drinking phase as a teenager (my grandparents were dairy farmers, we had fresh milk etc etc => I cannot drink skim milk), but went off it (haha in Dunedin you have to boil yr liquids!) & I will have to investigate this buttermilk stuff further . . .

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 22 August 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Just remembered the worlds stupidest drink idea: Milk Can. UHT milk only in a can rather than a carton. Supposed to make milk cool or something. Didn't. Unsurprisingly was utterly vile.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 22 August 2002 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had some unreal experiences on milk.

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk and other dairy products are one of the main causes of vile body odor. In fact, before Commodore Perry opened Japan to western influence (and probably for a substantial period afterwards) in the mid nineteenth century, Japanese routinely referred to westerners as 'barbarians' due to their hairiness and disgusting odor. The Japanese at that time did not consume milk or dairy products; tofu was their closest equivalent to cheese. If dairy products are avoided, shortly one's sweat will cease to smell foul.

It is also true that adult humans are not really biologically equipped to metabolize significant amounts of milk, especially cow's milk. This is why lactose intolerance becomes more likely with age.

That said, I love chocolate milk and cheese is one of the world's greatest inventions IMHO. Good thing I shower regularly.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 12 December 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Only milk poured in coffee for me. The rest of the little container sits in the fridge until someone takes it out with the trash.

Drinking milk straight up = majorly gross for me, though I've been known occasionally to do so with very chocolatey chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a drop of milk in a cup of tea first thing in the morning and, apart from when doing mashed potato, that's it. milk is bleurgh.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't drink much now, but I drank a lot as a kid. Probably too much, because I used to get told off for filling my stomach with milk and not wanting my dinner. Then I used to drink a lot of milk as a student from the urn at breakfast (they had a tea urn filled w/ milk, I know, bizarre) and annoy ppl who wanted it for their cereal.

It's really satisfying to order milk at a restaurant (esp if you are drunked).

Abbott, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe I ever switched to soymilk. What was I thinking? I really enjoy regular milk with my cereal now. Still feels weird to drink it straight up, though doing so at a restaurant while drunk is a great idea.

Bimble, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

I read that milk negates the positive effects of tea, though, so I never put it in tea anymore.

Bimble, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

I drink like two gallons per week. My mum is an osteoporosis nurse and is obsessed with bone health, so she made me drink a lot when I was a kid, and I developed a habit.

That joke in Anchorman "milk was a bad choice today" that everyone loves? I don't get it. It is never a bad choice.

Latham Green, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

I hate drinking milk plain, for pre-rational reasons rooted in childhood, though I can ex post facto justify it because it's a liquid that comes out of a cow's body. Once I was in Mexico City, had gotten pretty drunk the night before & woke up ridic thirsty as is wont to happen after blasting tequila all night. I had forgotten to buy bottled water, though. I didn't want to get any sicker, so the tap was out of the question, but there was a gallon of milk in the fridge that my roommate had bought. So I poured a huge glass of it & forced it down, & for the first time since being pre-rational I drank milk plain. & then...all was fine. You probably wish that the story had a less boring ending but I don't.

from Vice a couple years back... from a story called "Adults Who Still Drink Milk: Are You Okay?"

I’m not the only person who finds the sight of grown-ass adults drinking whole milk unsettling. Type “adult” and “milk” into Twitter and you’ll see Tweets like “I do not trust adults who drink milk” and “adults who drink milk straight from a glass disturb me.”

I love a cold glass of whole milk but I know there are many (if not most) folks that can't really digest it very well
Note that they're not talking about cheese or cream in your coffee, specifically MILK the beverage
