Temp Agencies- Dud or Satanspawn?

Are temp agency workers the spawn of satan? If I've offended any temp agency workers posting to ILX, good. I would explain why, but I like to limit myself to using the word "cunt" less than 400 times a day.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

for the most part they are wuvvly and put up bravely with their lack of rights/company perks/holiday pay ect.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie is right. Temp agency WORKERS are not the spawn of satan. Temp agencies are.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant people who work at temp agencies, not those working for them. I apologise for any misunderstanding.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, well in THAT case you're probably right. share your grievances! (thinking of an alternative word to c*nt will focus your mind and help you calm down)

katie (katie), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I envy you being frustrated with job agencies and not a job Dom!

(But I have applied to a record store which had a sign up so we'll see, also I may get fired cos my till was 200 euro out last night, DAMN!)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god yes. 'Recruitment consultants' are indeed satanic spawn. They sell people - go figure.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I still haven't bothered phoning mine (well, the only one that would even give me a form), cos they haven't phoned me, plus they told me to come back with a CV and when I did said "Have you filled in the form?", of which there was no mention the first time I went, so I had to spend another 2 hour round trip to bring it. Luckily Big Pink Candyfloss Haircut has just come on and is keeping me calmer.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you mean temp agency management. *lowers highly sharpened red pencil that she nearly put through Dom's head* Yes, I've encountered some specimens that should be fired...ideally out of a cannon toward a masonry wall.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote a song aboutmy experience with the Temp Agency. I wish you could hear it

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 22 August 2002 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't, whatever you do, work for Office Angels, they paid my NI contributions to the wrong number for a period of 4 months in spite of many protestations from me.

Manpower are ok, they even give you paid holidays.

Leigh, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they are poor, but it is my experience that they are getting better. I think that they were much better at matching me to a job when I used them the second time (2000) than the first (1995) although this may be because I had more nous and indeed work experience (& hence a better CV) the sceond time around. Brook Street simply told me "We handle secretarial work. if you want something else go elsewhere" which was quick to the point and saved any faffing around. I much prefer this approach to "Yes, of course we'll put you on our books" to all and sundry, being eager to please when really they have nothing to suit an individual's skills and experience. I made the mistake of not complaining when I got put into a job I didn't like when I used them the first time, thus enduring hellish admin. jobs when I could've been placed somewhere more appropriate.

Personal experience is all anyway in these things; I mean there's one agency in Oxford who got me the temp job which allowed me to gain the permanent position which I have held for the past 2 years, so obv I have respect for them, they may have messed around thousands of other ppl and I was just the lucky one!

All I remember about Office Angels is that they made me do a typing test in a darkened room in their basement! The only light was from the pc!

Oh, so many stories to tell... so many stories.

I mean, yesterday at 4pm I was ready to take a couple of shotguns and go all Klebold and Harris on the offices of Alliance (that's Alliance). Calmed down somewhat now...

Hmmm, where to start? Yesterday, I found out I was lied to by Alliance (spelt A-L-L-I-A-N-C-E) about why I left my last job. They said I was let go, and yesterday told me that I was fired. They lied to me about the other staff, the reason for my leaving, and so forth. Anyway, as such, my CV now gives all other agencies the name of said company, so they can phone them up and find out I was sacked, when my CV says the work ran out, making me look like a liar liar. Funny how Alliance only saw fit to tell me this when they found another job for me, huh? I told them where they could ram their bloody job.

So many more things... where I'm working at the moment. 6-2. Warehouse work. Fair enough, I don't mind a bit of graft. What I do mind, though... Seven workers. Me, four English lads (temp veterans), and two immigrants. Now, we're allegedly "randomly" assigned to two seperate groups. Funny how this random system puts the three guys with the foreign names (notice my name doesn't exactly make me seem too full of the spirit of John Bull, does it) together, and the four Anglos together, no?

So much more... agencies that charge you £2 a day for transportation, despite the place being less than a mile away. Agencies that tell you that you're doing one thing, get to the place and discover you're doing something completely different. I have 14,000 kdph. Roughly twice the speed of a professional typist. And yet I'm forced to wake up at 4am and move pallettes and pump trucks all day.

Ah... screw them all. I was published in Careless Talk Costs Lives, I don't deserve this.

I was published in Careless Talk Costs Lives, I don't deserve this.

By that logic, my column there means I should just go home and go to bed. ;-)

Okay, let's just widen our spew of vitriol to include anyone working in a Human Resources capacity. Anywhere. Ever.

I would really like to know where they find these people. Underneath rocks, perhaps? I write this having received a letter from one of these bozos rejecting me for a job I never even applied for.

Also temp agencies are satanspawn because they charge the employer £20 an hour for clerks, etc, paying the clerks themselves less than a third of that.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone working in a Human Resources capacity

Can't go that far -- couple of the people here at UCI are actually fine and friendly folks. Sounds like they should have been working where you were dealing with!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Careless Wanks Cost Kittens!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!111

david h (david h), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I got my fine (and so far long-lived at 2.5 years) graphics job through a temp agency. So I heart them.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 22 August 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

my mom is the benefits administrator at the school district in my hometown. she is a nice, and competent lady. DON'T MAKE FUN OF MY MOM.

also i am working through a temp agency right now and it's fine. i suspect, though, that i'm in one of those situations where the boundaries are blurred somewhat -- i didn't get sent to my job by the people in the agency, i got hired by my now-former boss (and i might get a fulltime job at this place, fingers x'd!). there was a bit of a hubbub about us getting 'benefits' but they're totally shit. that is the one thing that is the suckiest about this whole situation -- i'm scared to get sick.

maura (maura), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

office angels give free lunches when you go to hand in your timesheet. that is A GOOD THING.

free pizza = good temp agency.

ailsa, Friday, 23 August 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

temp agencies are crap.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 August 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

all the ones here are, in any case.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 August 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

one of my best freinds worked as a Human Resources person and had to give it up because os the endless stress, and people generally bitching at/about him while he was simply doing his job. This is why I trained for that area at Uni but never took it up, his experience scared me off.

Temp agencies though = generally bollocks, although I did have an interview with a specialist one for the sector I've worked in before and they were very good indeed.
