Have you ever hung around outside a courthouse to shout abuse at someone accused of a crime?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

what type of fucked up question is that?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it refers to this

michael (michael), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Crowds = good. Mobs = bad.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

'there's no justice like mob justice' as ned flanders once said (i think).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, the question is based on the woman being charged in connection with the Holly & Jessica killings, yes.

Shouting abuse at people outside courts really does seem like such an odious thing to do, so I was wondering if maybe someone here had done it once and was able to give the other side of the coin to us.

A mob made up entirely of David Lynch characters = classic.

There was a student politician at Auckland University who did this total scam. He put himself on the roll as a local body politician in heaps of different suburbs around Auckland and raked in the money when he got elected (most people who stand for local councils get elected here). When he was uncovered he broke into the police station where the files against him were held and stole them, but he got caught for that too. He was a total right winger who was always writing offensive columns about how Maori were greedy or something like that. I was driving round with my rather big, straight boyfriend in his red holden station wagon and we passed this guy standing on the corner of Queen and Wellesley Street, with about five hundred other rush hour pedestrians, and my boyfriend leant out the window and shouted 'CRIMINAL'! at him as we slowly floated around the corner. It was the perfect moment!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 22 August 2002 06:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"Can we digitally enhance that?"

"That is digitally enhanced, sir."

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 August 2002 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Bring back hanging now? NO.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 August 2002 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, hanging.

(I don't agree or anything, I just find these people amusing)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd like to do it, but for the wrong reasons...

i don't care about the crims inside, i just want to be able to go and throw rocks and shit at a police van without fear of getting a kicking from our friendly Bobbies.

so, classic.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i have enhanced that image, but it's hosted on tripod, so I'll try a "open in other window" clicky...

Bring back ???

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmm, pie.

Dan I., Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think g-kit has hit on something there. It's only part of what's going on here, but I get the impression that a fair proportion (don't know what though) of the people who turn up to these things generally look like they are already - as the euphemism goes - 'known to the police' (not implying anything about you here g-kit). When the country went through a phase of 'Keel! Keel The Monster!' torch-bearing mobs gathering around suspected paedophiles homes, many of them seemed like scummy crims itching to be able to do some mini-rioting and GBH while tapping into some warped sense of civic fucking duty - it's like 'here's someone that makes ME look like a GOOD citizen in comparison'
Yeah, I may be a vandalising house-breaking car-stereo-nicking racist bigoted mugging fucking yob, but I STILL LOVES ME KIDS DUNNI?

The Bulger case had trickier elements again, of course.

Ray M (rdmanston), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

When Come Back Hanging Will Solve Crime.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd chase a van full of pie down the street, deffo.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

with the Bulger case in particular, I got the impression that the baying mobs outside the court was made up of people very like the killers' parents.
