So which one wins in this wonderfully weird collection of movies directed by Herr Petersen? I left out the German language ones because I figured most of us won't know those.

neverending story

(.づ☀‿☀)づ ~da post-modernist struggle~ (.づ☀‿☀)づ (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

Since every cable movie station in the planet plays it every two hours, I've grown very fond of In the Line of Fire. Eastwood and Malkovich should have made, like, six movies together as hero/villain antagonists.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

This guy's filmography is just so weird. I think I have to go with NEverending story but shattered is surprisingly great.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

He's churned out expensive crap for almost twenty years though.

In retrospect I'm kinda surprised Enemy Mine was even made. "You want Louis Gossett Jr. to play what?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

omg i had no idea he made air force one.

Yeah I had no idea he did air force one either. Has anyone else seen shattered? It's excellent IMO. The NEverending story was my jam as kid tho. I could probably still recite large parts of the dialogue. It just rules. Even now random parts will pop into my head like when the gnome dude who nurses falcon back to health says "It's my scientific speciality" - the pops into my head often and in exactly the voice that he uses.

Falcor not con

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

I had no idea the same person was responsible for all of these films! Neverending Story to Enemy Mine makes sense, sort of.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

Also the sphinxes with the lazer beam eyes were so scary!

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and when bastian rides falcor and chases the bullies into the dumpster - so badass!

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

they make no little beep-beep-beep-beeps

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

It was the Nothing that scared me. really a brilliant idea, the nothing I mean.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah the nothing. The rock monster was great too. It's all great. I've always meant to read the book.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:35 (fourteen years ago)

These were big strong hands.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

Never actually seen das boot.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

the book has 26 chapters and every chapter begins consecutively with a different letter of the alphabet and the letters are intricately illuminated and occupy the entire facing page

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

so that's cool.

In the Line of Fire >>>>> Das Boot

I know he tried to make life tense in a submarine but.

and so on

xpost -- Listen you. (The entire US sub force fell in love with Das Boot when it showed up as a movie in the States; pretty much it was the only film up until that point which actually got the inside of a submarine -- especially one from that era -- right.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

Ok I'm gonna get the book.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

If Malkovich had played the first mate hissing effetely in the captain's ear, we woulda had something.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

Plus ITLOF has the greatest exchange in film history:

MALKOVICH: You will be standing over the grave of another dead president.

EASTWOOD: You're gonna be standin' over my ass, motherfucker!

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

ahahaha okay i need to see ITLOF

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

surprises me that people consider this list of films so odd. he made an international spalsh with das boot, a tense, gritty action-thriller, and has spent most of his subsequent career making roughly similar films - barring a brief detour into sci-fi and fantasy kids when he was starting out. ridley scott followed a similar pattern.

i'm vote for neverending story, but i haven't seen all of his post-80s films. not a big fan of straightforward, real-world thrillers.

My dad was in the Merchant Marines during WWII and was torpedoed and sunk twice by U-Boats. To my knowledge Das Boot was the only movie he ever saw twice in a movie theater.
