Liberals you know who seem like latent conservatives.

On account of their disposition, or who knows what, but there've always been a few people I've just had a... feeling about, that they could easily turn to the right. And in one case it did happen, though a decade later. Have you ever had such suspicions, or had them confirmed?

Basic clues:

1) Highly dissatisfied with the status quo. This would seem, on the face of it, to be antithetical to conservatism, but it is not, given how conservatism currently operates.

2) Generally selfish and shallow, despite a veneer of social concern.

3) Makes arguments for his or her positions based on simple axioms which are supposedly derived from common sense.

4) Not open to new information and not willing to concede a point.

These characteristics are extremely common in political discourse among young and old alike. Among the young they do not correlate especially well to conservatism, but they are relatively good predictors for growing conservatism as the possessor ages.

Hmmm, yeah. My college roommate wasn't selfish or shallow, but he had fits of righteous anger that fed on themselves. And I'll bet he's still using the same brand of shampoo.
