Patrick Leigh Fermor RIP

Been a couple of days now, but there seemed to be no thread on the man and ILOVEBOOKS seems a dusty unvisited board. I supposed people should not be too sad, , as he had a hell of a life. But I was hoping the 3rd volume about his trip across Europe would have seen the light of day before he passed on. Maybe it still will. Any fans out there?

I did put it up on the rolling thread.
Rolling RIP/obituary thread - 2011 edition
One of my favourite travel writers (which are currently my favourite writers full stop), Between the Woods and the Water is just a beautiful, beautiful book, but there's lots more (obviously).

According to the obit in The Guardian the 3rd volume is due to be published incidentally.

I read his books on the Mani peninsula in Greek Peloponnese and on the Roumeli in northern Greece and enjoyed both greatly. His feeling for the culture of rural Greece was profound without being contaminated by a lot of rubbish sentimentality.

I recall also reading a book describing a daring paratroop mission in Crete during WWII, where the commander of all German forces on the island was kidnapped and exfiltrated by submarine, and I am all but certain that he wrote the book and was the leader of the raid -- but there is a chance I have misremembered this. Excellent book, too.

ILOVEBOOKS seems a dusty unvisited board

I Love Books is visited every day by a small coterie of book lovers who keep it well furnished with thoughtful posts... and we dust once a week!

(which Fermor didn't write - but which I think he contributed to - and obviously - is in?)

Yes. Good show, Ned.

Even that other desert ghost town ILOVEFILM has in recent times seen a few green shoots reaching towards the sun.

In any case, never heard of the subject of this thread before, but the quality people singing his praises are making me want to check him out.

You should - I am not moved by much on the written page but Fermors prose are so damn, er, elegant. Reminds me of Sebald, or possibly that should be the other way around.
