Robert Altman's Prêt-à-Porter/Ready to Wear is fucking amazing, and Unzipped (Mizrahi doc) and Catwalk (Claudia doc) are on my to-do list. What else should I dig up?

Lagerfeld Confidential's quite interesting. The September Issue has its moments.
The House Of Chanel documentary series was great.

I just watched Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? yesterday and Unzipped today; both were amazing. I wish I could find Catwalk and Peter Lindbergh's Models: The Film somewhere. Anyone have any more recs?

Also holy shit at how whiny and childish Linda Evangelista is!! It's sad to see how much she acts like a spoiled 4-year-old bcz it sort of ruins this sophisticated adult impression I had of her.

I think my favorite is Win Wender's documentary about Yohji Yamamoto, Notebook On Cities And Clothes, but I'm a fan of both people involved.

Not a film I'd give a general recommendation to, but ppl with an interest in fashion might like Valentino: The Last Emperor.

I just watched Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? yesterday
One of the best opening 10 mins for a film I've seen in a while. Klein seems quite an interesting guy, like to see more of his stuff...
But I only saw the clip - do any of these overcome the difficulty of portraying fashion as somehting that only the 'vacuous' of mind do. I guess many people industry are like that, but that tends to limit the options of what you can say about it..

I was reading about a film recently, a French film from maybe the 50's or maybe earlier?, that's supposed to be a satire of the fashion industry and is NOT Polly Maggoo. Any ideas?

Le Couturier de Ces Dames (Fernandel the Dressmaker) Jean Boyer, 1956A modest tailor (the irresistible comic star Fernandel) unexpectedly inherits a nearly bankrupt fashion house from one of his former mistresses. He accepts the bequest and fantasizes about transforming the company into the most exclusive establishment in Paris. Fearing the questions of his jealous wife, Adrienne (cheeky actress and singer Suzy Delair), he decides to keep the news from her. Of course, Adrienne soon finds out and starts making trouble for her unfaithful husband. This entertaining if peredictable movie showcases the marvelous on-screen chemistry between two of France’s greatest comic performers.

― Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Friday, 14 November 2014 07:36 (ten years ago)
the Diana Vreeland doc was enjoyable to watch but really not a great movie, very superficial, spent lots of time telling us that she was great but not really explaining why or giving any meaningful context, and lacked any sort of depth/complexity/criticism. Still fun to watch for the footage tho.
The September Issue was p great, tho

Just watched Bright Lights, Big City for, I don't know, the fourth or fifth time last week--one of my favourite "I can't rationally explain this, but..." movies. Michael J. Fox causes a big coked-out commotion at an Oscar de la Renta show; Phoebe Cates, his soon-to-be ex-wife, doesn't so much as glance at him from up on the runway.

The fact that The Devil Wears Prada has not been mentioned yet may be taken as an indication of how memorable it was.

I liked both The September Issue and The Devil Wears Prada--with someone other than Anne Hathaway, probably not.

tbh it feels more like a perils-of-corporate-america film or a boss-from-hell film than it does a fashion film tho

(xpost) Fantastic--they've got whole films up there, including the Diana Vreeland and Model (which I hope I can download using Real Player and watch on TV).
― clemenza, Monday, 30 January 2017 16:55 (eight years ago)
Vreeland is also on Amazon Prime but Model, yeah, that's not easy to come by.

yes, London fashion industry in the '50s. Currently filming
― Number None, Monday, 30 January 2017 22:48 (eight years ago)
I just watched Dior & I and WHAT THE FUCK HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS???? So exquisite and breathtaking, I legit cried during the finale, I couldn't believe how great the soundtrack was, and I'm actually rly angry it has an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes when the Vreeland doc has like a 94%.

I saw one of the two Saint Laurent films that came out within a few months of each other, but I don't remember which, and they both got pretty middling reviews. It was p forgettable

I don't think the Bonello one was 'forgettable'...
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 13:27 (eight years ago)
Have either of you seen them both? What were the differences between them? The one I saw had a lot of like bad behavior and debauchery but tbh I don't think I'd remember which one I saw even if I watched the trailers.

― who even are those other cats (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 19:39 (eight years ago)
(xpost) No, it was pretty good--the by-play between her and her son is funny. I mean that every time I see a fashion-related documentary, I want to understand what I'm not getting about fashion--how clothes that often look hideous to me and a world that's a million miles from my own have such an influential place in the culture. I wish I had a few copies of the Italian Vogue's "black issue," though, which supposedly sells for a couple of thousand dollars on eBay.
